HC Ryan Day (2019 B1G Media COY)

His play calling on 3rd and short situations feeds into the “soft team” narrative big time.

If he wants to have a hissy fit about that being a thing, then be man enough to look in the mirror and own your part of it.
Remember when Tater Tott at Michigan kept getting questions about how small he was, and I think Barwis kept spending media time talking about how he was such a big boy and he was annoyed at all the teeny tiny baby boy comments? The obvious commentary on that at the time was...if you have to keep bringing it up, then it's an issue. Well....

Yep.

You are sending a signal with a jet sweep on 4th and 1.

If someone thinks that signal is “we are a physically tough team” then…yeah.

I’m off the Day train for now. I have been a supporter, but last night was abysmal. We happened to win not because of him, but despite the fact that I could’ve called a better game. That and the fact that he let Lou Holtz get in his head proves to me that the consecutive ass kickings we took from the skunk weasels were actually typical rather than anomalies. People who actually are “tough” don’t ever say and don’t ever have to say that they are and they don’t have to try and prove it. Not taking the first field goal opportunity and then playing defense and getting the ball back (which would’ve actually been tough) was indefensible and put me right off Team Day. This win doesn’t prove what he then screamed that it did. In fact, I think, at least as to the head coach, it proved the opposite. We happened to win, but I’m no more confident about our chances against State Penn, the vulvernes, or in the playoff now than I was on Thursday.

Is it fair to question the discipline day instills into the team as well? A dumbass no discipline penalty was a turning point of the Michigan game last year and another one almost cost us this game

To each his own.

I’ll admit, I’m more worried about Day than I used to be. But the level of criticism he gets relative to his success rate is absolutely mind boggling to me. People act like we hired a seasoned HC and not a guy learning on the job as a beginner HC. If you prove you can recruit, prove you can win a VERY high percentage of your games including making the playoffs as many times as he has, and you still catch shit? At some point the fanbase seems ridiculous to me. Friends that aren’t OSU fans say to me all the time, they can’t understand the Day hatred considering his winning percentage and I agree.

Put it this way. Fire Day. Who are you replacing him with?

Sometimes it is the devil you know vs the devil you don’t.

For me, I will take the one I know and hope he grows and gets better. People criticized Kirby early in his career too saying he couldn’t win the big games.

We were literally a few plays from beating UGA last year and people on here act like we got steam rolled.

I realize tne record in THE game is the first barometer and then Nattys and I agree. But people seem to let those metrics completely absolve Tress and Urban for their big time losses…..and there were several really bad ones by each of them that everyone conveniently ignores.

If Chip gets stuffed on the last play this thread looks a lot different, but he didn't so I'm still enjoying the win.

That said, the 4th and 1 calls were attempts to trick the defense and neither worked. You want to establish toughness? Line up in those situations with Chip and Mayan in the backfield and shove McCord forward, or or give it to the lead back and have the other push him. Don't give me a WR sweep or play action on the goal line with little room to operate.

Thing is, it's hard for a man in his 40s to change how he thinks. Day is Day, but if The Game goes south again and looks like the last two this win over ND will quickly be forgotten.

Who here knew who Hafley was before he was hired? Who ever heard of Day before Urban hired him? Tressel was an unknown to many of us as well. Point being, there are names and those not in the coaching profession not know them doesn’t mean they couldn’t succeed.

The “you can’t criticize the coach because you don’t have a replacement name” argument is completely flawed.

I can tell it was a rough flight without being qualified to fly the plane.

It’s not so much “who else can you hire?” as it is a statistical gamble when talking replacement wins/losses with a new regime.

You are taking a big gamble, statistically speaking, on replacing those wins/losses if you fire Day and try to improve.

To borrower a poker analogy, the pot odds on that bet are tough to swallow.

You better be damn sure.

I think some folks are in a bit of a toxic spiral on this forum as it relates to Day. There were mistakes yesterday (short yards on 3rd/4th downs, jet sweep was awful) but also, the Buckeyes came away with a hard-fought win on the road against a top-10 opponent.

One of either Day or Freeman was going to walk away with a win while the other having made critical mistakes - which is a sign of a close game. Same as Georgia last year. Yes, there's been mistakes in the past games- but this isn't the past. I can't imagine the unrealistic expectations some of you have for a team with a young QB and OL on the road.

I don’t care for mainstream coverage but Klatt was right; there isn’t a fanbase that hammers its program more than OSU. I’m calling myself out for it too because I absolutely do and it’s a little fucked up.

But I agree with the predictability of second down. I’d think there was an analyst on staff that can offer statistical insight to Day as to why it’s so easily shifted out by opposition; either we don’t have that information or it’s being disregarded. Neither is comforting.
