How did you celebrate after the 2002 NC?

The recent chatter about a possible OSU-UM Orange Bowl matchup has me thinking about 2002 and the surreal NC night in Tempe. I'd like to share my celebration of that night with all of you.

I was lucky to be in the stadium that night, and after the on-field celebration concluded, we staggered out (sheer emotional exhaustion) into the streets, looking for a place to celebrate. Ran into Sapp's "limo" (unusually quiet) and Eddie G. (all smiles and emotionally exhausted like the rest of us). Unfortunately, all watering holes closed shortly after gametime, as did convenience stores. Escapes to our hotels were impossible, as cab waits were 1-2 hours.

3 of us (friend and his wife) saw a cab waiting for some UM fans, we quickly greased him with a fifty, and he took off with the UM fans chasing us down the street.

Once back to my friends' hotel, we grabbed our beer, put my friend's wife to bed, and hit the most beautiful large stone jacuzzi that I'd ever seen. Around 3:00am, a heavily tattooed biker dude comes out and asks us for a beer. He's from Columbus and is a Buckeye, so of course he joins the party. At 4:00am, an executive from Texas calls down from his balcony, and asks if he can join us. He's a Buckeye, so he's in, along with his Cuban stogies and Stoli that he thoughtfully brought down with him.

From 4 until sunrise, the 4 hard core Buckeyes from disparate backgrounds, recounted the game and our respective heritages. The best part occured about every half hour when we would spontaneously point to the center of the jacuzzi (think 4 derelicts in a 16 person jacuzzi, each sitting equidistant from the next, passing around beers and vodka while smoking Cubans) and then to the star filled desert sky, at which time we would all scream "We are The National Champions!", jump out of the jacuzzi, climb up an adjoining stone wall and cannonball into the adjacent pool. At sunrise we went our separate ways, and I stormed to Denny's to have breakfast while reading my Fiesta Bowl program.

Excessive? Yes, but I'll never forget it. Hope you enjoy it.

Go Bucks!

In typical JC fashion, I was sick as a dog and barely made it through the game. I went to bed right after. You guys owe me, had I been healthy and drinking they would have lost, guaranteed.

Immediately after the game I ran out onto the back deck around and started screaming, keep in mind that I live in Pennsylvania so I'm sure most people were not aware of what was going on. The very next morning I left on a 6:00 a.m. flight for Miami completely decked out in Buckeye national championship game gear. Spent the whole day in Miami dressed in scarlet and gray, man you should've seen the looks that I got at the airport and hotel. Wore it faithfully all day until my wife decided to take a walk on the beach at about 10:00 p.m. At that point I decided I'd like to have the chance to live to see the next national championship so I reluctantly changed.

Next day boarded a cruise ship for seven days. I still have all the Cry-ami papers whining about Porter's call. Funny thing on the way back through customs in Miami we had some stuff that you're really not supposed to bring back into the country (cigars, liqour) and again I'm wearing my OSU stuff. So we get to the front of the line and the customs officer says, "Buckeye fan, huh." My immediate thought was "oh, shit, I've got some disgruntled Miami fan here and i'm going to spend the next four hours getting a cavity search." But the next thing out of his mouth was "Hell of a game last week, I graduated in 85, go on through!"

I was getting set to deploy to the desert for the Iraqi war. I was stationed and Georgia and my Father and his girlfriend drove down to spend time with me before we left. He gave me the Season in review DVD that had the entire regular season on it.(A Time and a Change.) We were packing up our equipment at work because we were leaving in a week. I didn't make it home till right before the game. I watched it with my Dad and his girlfriend and my roommate who is a huge LSU fan. He was a very knowledgable fan and he thought tOSU had a good chance to win. By the time the game got started we were all pretty well on our way to being drunk. We partied quick considering we had only been there for half an hour before the game started. At half time I was really drunk and we were winning so I made the mistake of saying if we win the NC I'll run around the block naked screaming we are the champs. Once Cie Grant pulled down Ken Dorsey and the ball feel incomplete we were all jumping up and down and I remember hugging my father and going this is what we have been waiting for. They of course made sure I lived up to my guarantee once the celebrations were over. So I did. Georgia will never be the same again. The next day I went to a movie with my dad and we still were in shock that we were NC. A week later I took off to the desert to set up before the war started. But the entire six months I was there I had that DVD to watch and those Beautiful memories to recall apon and get me through some unpleasant times. The Buckeyes literally helped this Airman get through the war. Thank you to all of the 2002 Buckeyes for your role in supporting the war.

Nerk- I do envy you for being at the game. However, I do not envy the fact that you celebrated by sitting in a hot tub with a bunch of guys .:(

Anyway, I hit the floor and cried like a school girl when Cie Grant sacked Dorsey.

Poured into the streets of Tempe... hunted for a cab, to no avail... went into a bar and luckily hit last call (pounded a few), went out into the streets again to find a cab... none.... hit a convenience store, purchased alcohol and wondered through Tempe looking for a cab while drinking (not smart... I know). Was with a group of folks (at that point there might have been 12 of us), finally found a cab (we greased him with a twenty, and took it away from some other folks.... he didn't even log the trip. He charged us a flat fee and kept it all for himself)... got back to the hotel very late (3 or 4 in the morning Arizona time) and passed out with my clothes on. Woke up the next day and drank all day with a bunch of buckeye fans at Hooters in downtown Phoenix :) ... went to Vegas the next day and collected my winnings from the game

Screamed "Yeah" a lot. Ran around a little bit. Went outside to try and cool off. Listened to the jubilation coming from the houses in my neighborhood (and watched out for stray bottle rockets) Watched some post game stuff. Drank. tried to sleep. Slept. Woke up and read about everything I could find about it.

I watched the game on the TV with some friends. In 2002 a close friend of mine had been a GM for HatWorld/Lids, so after about 5 minutes of high fives and hugs following Cie Grant spinning Dorsey to the turf, he ran outside to his car and returned a minute later with a box full of the 'Official' Ohio State National Championship hats. We joked around for about 15 minutes while watching the trophy presentation debating what we could do with the other box full of Miami National Championship hats he still had sealed in his trunk.

We all headed out to some bars for several hours afterwards, then capped off the night at a Tim Horton's for coffee at about 3:00 AM.

It was early, early morning in South Africa. I just stepped outside and screamed. No words. Not anything rational. I just screamed at the top of my lungs. And I knew my father heard me in the next world. And I knew he screamed back.
