How to evaluate a cornerback...

As for Jenkins...There's not a reciever in the nation that could abuse this guy. I can think of 2 recievers that could give him fits on some plays (manningham/Duecett) but that's it.

I don't agree with that- Jenkins has slipped in performance a bit this year (compared to last), and as of right now, I don't think Jenkins is the best DB the Buckeyes have in the defensive backfield. Jenkins happens to be our marquee, but I think there are players who are contributing more right now (namely, the younger, hungrier guys).

No, it's a personal evaluation. Trust me, I have more expertise than your average Joe. Moving forward, you evidently don't have anything productive to add. Are you an attention whore? Why would you make that comment?

i'm not an attention whore. i just assumed you weren't insane, so i figured you must be engaging in illicit activities. i made that comment because
1) when Malcom is playing the corner spot, the QB doesn't ever throw his way, indicating that he has his man covered every time... which leads to us seeing Washington and Chekwa breaking up passes left and right, and
2) when he's playing the safety spot, he's been all over the field, has picked off a pass, and broken up several more, and
3) he's been an unholy terror against the run and in the screen game... think a bigger Antoine Winfield.

there's a reason he's projecting as a top ten pick. that reason is NOT that he has regressed this year.

I'm basing my evaluation on the plays in which he's been involved, not the plays in which he hasn't. I explained my reasons earlier in this thread (pursuit angles, several missed tackles/reads, etc.). He's played well, but I think he played at a higher level last year. Again, I don't think Malcolm is a poor player by any stretch.

Not that this matters lvbuckeye but Mr. Incredible played college football.

Just beacause he played college football doesn't mean he is any smarter than anyone else. [begin sarcasm]I mean Charlie Weiss never played college ball and he has a strategic advantage on every team in college ball[end of sarcasm]

To only judge Malcom based on plays he has been involved in is the dumbest thing I have ever heard. What about the 20-25 pass plays a game when the ball isn't thrown his direction. Those have to be included in the analysis of a player.

That's for being my buddy in a dark alley, there, Thump.

LV: In all reality, I played with some guys who didn't know a single stunt or pre-snap read. I did try to absorb as much as I could and I can see some things at times that only a trained eye may be able to see. With that being said, I'm certainly not trying to insult anyone and my opinion is just that (one man's opinion)- I don't want to appear to be insulting, especially not towards Malcom. He has improved of late in my eyes as it seemed the first few games were the bumpiest. If you were able to be a fly on the wall in film session, you may have heard much the same. However, everyone gets insulted in those sessions. :)
I hope you didn't take the "attention whore" suggestion to heart, only messing around.

I didn't subscribe to end zone cam this season; so since the mainstream media tends to follow the football I can't exactly tell if he slipped out of a 3-deep to cover a crossing receiver on any particular play.

Especially for a corner back, this has got to be one of the poorest ways to evaluate a player, IMO i guess..

 oh, well.. in that case..

i had a "discussion" this past weekend with a former player from Arizona, back when Cooper was at ASU.. he didn't know shit.. the phrase "better to be thought a fool, than to open your mouth and prove it" applied very well to this guy.

i wasn't offended in the least. everyone misses a tackle occasionally. and i DO remember this kid making a solo tackle of Vince Young in the open field in his second college game... but to discount the plays that "he wasn't in on" is kind of ridiculous, IMHO... he wasn't "in on them" because his guy was covered. so in all reality, he WAS in on the play. he's only 1/11th of the defense.

and i remember him fighting off a block on a WR screen, maybe it was against Minny, when he took his guy out, then went and took some other guy's guy (Kurt Coleman?) out in the backfield...

Please help us understand how you determined this guy didn't know shit, and how this possibly applies to me. In addition, please re-read my post; as I stated, "LV: In all reality, I played with some guys who didn't know a single stunt or pre-snap read. I did try to absorb as much as I could and I can see some things at times that only a trained eye may be able to see."

Did I, at any time, say MJ hasn't made any nice plays? Please explain how I can possibly tell if he covered his man if I cannot see him on camera throughout the progression. I can tell if he's taking a poor angle from the safety or oppo corner spot. And do you know what else that angle may show (if it's shallow compared to the proper angle)? That the player may not be as fast, or as determined, as he is generally familiar (did he come in out of shape, less determination?). I'm not making the claim that MJ came in out of shape, but what I am saying is that he wasn't playing up to the standard he set last year IMHO.

Please, I'm offering an opinion here. I appreciate the conversation, LV, first and foremost. But to have someone state, "I met a former ASU player and he was dumb" makes you sound more ridiculous than he seemed to you. If I actually cared what you think, Mr. Original Signature (Bleed S & G... can't you do better?), I would sit down with an authentic game film and make you feel like you are watchiing an atom splitting.
