I see why Bucknuts doesn't allow political discussions now!

Well said Buckeyeprof and Clarity. A lot of times I listen to talk radio shows that are exactly the opposite of what I believe, so that I can get a feel for where the other side is coming from. Heck, sometimes they change my mind about things, as has some debates here.

To piggy-back what C-Dog just said (and maybe simply encapsulize), political discussion belongs either in the Open Forum or it's subforum Romper Room. That way folks won't feel inundated with anti/pro Bush/Kerry crap, and to me that's all it is...crap. I could give a shit about Kerry's claimed Viet Nam service or Bush's Coast Guard service. It's all lies anyways whatever they say. But for those who like to talk/debate/fuss/fight about that shit, keep it in the appropriate area.

I like the idea for a specific forum for politics and keeping it there. I know I am just reinforcing what others have said, but add another vote to the position that this will keep other threads on other parts of the board under control and still allow the banter that some people want. Good idea.

I've created a Political forum. It's a subform of Open Discussion. Let's toss it out there and see how it goes.

Thump, I apologize if my first response came off a bit like I had a bruised ego, that wasn't the point. Just to be clear, it wasn't what you were saying, it was my perception that I haven't really nailed home with everyone my desire for the community to shape the site.

We really can't be everything for everyone, but we can try collectively to constantly adjust and improve the overall experience here. Doing something about politics is a given, and I'm glad you provoked both the conversation and the resulting change.

I'd like to mod up a couple people for that forum specifically. Two folks, both would need to be people who are active in the political discussions, and I'd like one from both camps for the sake of equal time and representation. I'm not looking for censors, I'm looking for people to just help promote good conversation, but in a reasonable way. I'm not looking for cops, I'm looking for voices of reason who can take a step back when things get too heated, and say "let's try and at least respect each other's convictions, if not our perspectives." Someone who can encourage that political debate happen where it should.

Maybe this new forum is a bad idea, we won't know until we try it. I hope everyone will make a point to try and respect the desire to have those convos in the proper place.

I have found BP very enjoyable and objective, with stimulating conversations happening concurrently on different forums, as OSUgrad21 suggested that I would.

Politics is always a touchy subject, especially now during an election year and a war going on. Possibly, a forum dedicated strictly to political issues could be the answer for those posters who find this subject matter annoying, redundant and/or irrelevant.

Compared to the football battlefields I commonly visit on the web, this site is very respectful and tolerant of other people's opinions.

...As far as starting a thread about politics without it getting out of hand, there is no way that would happen.<!-- / message --><!-- sig -->
The blending of previous threads into political discussions is the primary reason I started the political thread today. I am very pleased that the thread has remained very civil. I am in agreement with Prof when he mentioned how interesting discussions about religion, politics, etc. can be when things remain at a reasonable level. If you haven't read the thread from today, then you probably should. You might appreciate how cordial and thoughtful each poster has been in expressing their views.

I have been very impressed with the members of this board and how most people feel comfortable expressing their opinions and sharing their thoughts with each other. I feel as though I am able to communicate with people here almost as though I am speaking with family/friends. I know that even if we don't all share the same viewpoints, and might even had strong disagreements, that we'll all be back the next day to talk about our beloved Buckeyes and other news. To put things in persective, I have a total of around 30 posts at BN where I've visited for about 2 years, but I have significantly more posts at BP, which I've been visiting for just about 2 months.

As Vince and I started moving political threads over to the new area, it started to become clear to me that trying to give it a dedicated home is something that is probably well overdue.

I read but don't participate in most of the political debate, so I might have been a little out of touch with it. Which to me illustrates why it's so important that the community plays an active role in shaping itself. I can't be everywhere, and I don't want to be the one to shape everything. I appreciate everyone's participation in this thread, and I hope we'll see more people speaking up with ideas on how to continue to improve in all phases.

I will admit, BN was my first experience with a chat board. Coming to BP, was a bit of a shock at first.

It took me a bit to get used to Mili's "potty mouth". just giving you grief mili :)

it was refreshing to come here and be able to express my opinions without censor, and yes, we at times have differing opinions. It was also refreshing to come on here and experience the freedom that other boards and chatrooms don't offer.

we are going to disagree, but what a great forum do share those differing beliefs and views...can we expect it to get heated? oh sure...politics and religion have been the cause of many a war...underlying all this, we are Buckeyes, and that alone helps to float some trust and respect through this all. For instance, I don't care for ekeen's politics, and I doubt he does mine, BUT, I love that he can express it, I love that I can hear an opposing view, I love that it;s safe, and OK here to argue and disagree...(just using you for example ekeen, plese don't stop)

Most boards I have been on have power cliches wher if you want to stay, you need to kiss their backside...(Mili? can you say the a@@ word for me please?)

Here on BP, you need not have a fear of irritating a cliche...admins allow you to freely express your thoughts, without punishing you for having opposing views...what a freedom.

we here on BP are part of a psuedo-experiment, one of Clarity's device and one that we have input into...here's hoping that BP grows and stays around for a long, long time.

Clarity is an amazing soul...the things he must deal with in his life and still, through it all, put together this awesome board for our enjoyment...how he, sometimes feeling ill, doesn't snap and banish some of us, I will never know...my hat is off to you Clarity and you have my appreciation...

be well

[BuckeyeBeliever steps down from his soapbox and awaits ekeen and mili's wrath]

We were brought here because of our love of all things OSU.

I have to laugh sometimes that we can argue over whether either Bush or Kerry is the anti-Christ after arguing over whether there is a God (or god if you prefer) to begin with - then set it all aside to talk football. That we can put OSU above all things politic and religious is both refreshing and puzzling.

As one who voted for the new board there is one part of the issue this will not resolve. Many posters are now clearly wearing a Liberal (child murdering, tax loving, anti-estabishment peace-nick slime) or Conservative (greedy, anti-choice, imperialistic, war mongering, scum bags) hat and that is known by many other posters. Political debates spill into non-political threads on a regular basis, often inappropriately. Now that we have a political forum I think we all need to cut that crap out and try to keep politics off of the other threads unless it is germane to the issue. Nothing Clarity can do about that - we need to police ourselves and politely remind others to do the same.

I suggest ekeen and Buckiprof or ekeen and Tibor...
