Idea for "great post awards"...

Saw31

High Seas Rogue
Would it be possible to have a third option in the rep window that lets you pick "great post award". If a certain amount of people (non-mods) pick "great post award" for that particular post, the post would be awarded. Just an idea for giving awards and some more "power to the people"....

But couldn't some idiot poster create multiple aliases and then have them vote the post of one of his aliases as a "great post"?
I'm sure one of my loyal dogs will follow up this idea with one of their insightful comments.

Not a bad idea, but I think the mods are around enough to spot the good ones, and they have good taste for the most part. Judging on how rep-happy most members are here, I think we'll just see more and more posts getting an award. As of now, I think the "Great Post" catches your eye much better than it would in the future if this were implemented

It could all be tied to a system that would 'weigh' users though.

I have a notion in mind, it's actually a fine-tuning of a promotion system that we used to have that was ill-advised in its first implementation.

The reality is I'm so far behind with everything, it will be this time next season before I could think seriously about something like this, and by then there will be bigger fish to fry.

Still, worth thinking about it, but nothing would roll out where everyone and anyone could submit, there would be tremendous abuse and over-usage.

I do agree the value in the great post award is the infrequency in which it's used.

Clarity, </p>how would you weigh users? Based on rep? I guess those posters not afraid to tell the truth won't "weigh" much.

No, not based on rep, but it would be part of the equation. Not all good posters have good rep. Not all posters with good rep are 'good' posters. There are exceptions to every rule, but generally speaking, it can be a valid portion of a larger picture.

Cart before the horse though. As I said, something like this wouldn't even go into a conceptual phase for quite some time.

your aliases haven't chimed in yet, did you get distracted or something?

Unless he's postng constantly with his multiple aliases, this would be a moot point (you could tell the others were fake). You should need a certain number of votes before earning a GPA.

I was thinking something like ten or twenty people would have to give it a "great post" endosement before it would be awarded to prevent abuse. But maybe you're right, by that time, a mod would most likely already have seen the post...I'm thinking of the "808 Buck" post (BTW) in the Veteran's Day thread. It evetually got awarded, but it took a while...Just an idea...

oh Christ...The Persecution Complex...:tibor:

I have an idea...how about a button similar to the rep and report bad post one that can report a post worthy of the award to the forum leaders? This would be similar to the Report bad post button and would still go through the mod filtering process.
