Let's not act like when Hafley first got hired, that fans were ecstatic over his hire. He was an unknown NFL coach who had ties to Day. The 49ers were happy to let him go, and had just as good of a year without him(no knock on Hafley, because I loved his time with the Buckeyes).

This is why I'm not too worried about Day's hiring practices, I don't think he has personal loyalties like Meyer, and is willing to bring in hungry guys who want the best. But the guys he will bring in, will be guys that fans just aren't familiar with, so we will really have to trust his instincts. I'm not getting my hopes up over Coombs(why would he leave a successful NFL team) or Ash(how do we know he would mesh well with Mattison, and that his schemes would work again).

Kerry Coombs is top priority for Ohio State
The Buckeyes had hoped to hang on to Jeff Hafley for at least one more season, but Friday night it officially found out the co-defensive coordinator was heading to Boston College to take over his own program. The timing for Ohio Sate isn’t ideal for a couple reasons, although Hafley will continue to coach through the College Football Playoff and an effort to replace him quickly and ease the concerns of defensive back recruits appears to be underway.

The top target for the Buckeyes: Kerry Coombs. The former Ohio State cornerbacks coach left the program to try his hand in the NFL, and he’s continued to have a positive impact with the Tennessee Titans. The option to return is almost certainly going to be up to Coombs, with Ohio State prepared to make a significant financial offer and already working behind the scenes to see if it’s possible for him to make recruiting calls while still with the Titans and while Hafley finishes out his duties in the postseason. There are other names in the mix at the NFL level, and Ohio State has had discussions about another former assistant returning with Chris Ash on the market. But Coombs is clearly at the top of the list for the Buckeyes.

Would love this... only 57 and energy for days. His units always did well and I'd be comfortable having him as co DC.

His recruiting would be enormous too

Biography
Gannon is in his second season with Indianapolis as defensive backs/cornerbacks coach. He has 12 years of coaching experience, including eight seasons in the NFL with the Colts (2018), Minnesota Vikings (2014-17) and Tennessee Titans (2012-13). Gannon also spent three seasons (2009-2011) as a scout with the St. Louis Rams.

If Day wins the Natty this year he starts to have more pull to demand that kind of stuff. You're unlikely have that pull as a first time head coach in his first season. It is what it is

He doesn't even need to win the national title to now do so. His winning his first 16 games as head coach, winning the division and conference, and making the playoffs gives him to "cred" to start dictating contract requirements.
