Game Thread Iowa at tOSU, Homecoming, Oct 19, 3:30 ET, ABC/ESPN/ESPN2

Purchased my car in Iowa City. Used all 344 HP to get the pumpkin out of there as fast as I could.

Not to ruin the theme here, but I lived in Iowa City last summer and loved it. It's a pure college town with a ton of bars and restaurants, and a couple nice lakes/reservoirs to chase tail in the Summer. The rest of the state pretty much seemed like Ohio, with a meth problem.

I lived in eastern Iowa for 5 years. I went to games at Kinnick - even ones not involving OSU. I was that one red dot in the crowd. Took a little harrassment for sporting my scarlet and gray, but Iowa fans were largely just confused or curious. I found them to be a mostly innocuous bunch. Lots of good, solid folks in Iowa.

I didn't miss Iowa when I left because the scenery is pretty bland. Not many trees, rolling hills and flat land, corn on the left, soy beans on the right. But the worst thing is the weather. That's where weather happens - cold air meets warm. I was constantly in the basement with my head between my legs or digging out from 20 inches of snow. It was in Iowa where I experienced thunder, lightning, and the heaviest snow you can imagine. Never seen that before or since.

So, for all those reasons, and for the other numerous indignities I had to suffer within the Hawkeye state, Ohio State needs to open up a can of whoop-ass tomorrow.

Here's the key breakdown between Ohio State and Iowa.

Michigan State (acceptable representation of Ohio State) rumbled for 135 rushing yards against Iowa, but yielded no TDs on the ground. Iowa held Michigan State to about 1 yard under their season average in yards per carry. If that's the case, then Ohio State should average at least 5 yards per carry on Iowa.

On the flip side, Iowa ran the ball well for the season until they ran into the Spartans, which held Iowa to 23 rushing yards. Yes, Michigan State is the current leader in rushing defense, but Ohio State isn't far behind at #6. I don't see Ohio State giving up more than 60 rushing yards against Iowa. They will game plan to shut that down and force Jake Rudock to air it out. He's a sophomore and he should be prone to some mistakes against relentless pressure.

This would be a great opportunity to get Dontre Wilson on the field with jet sweep runs to spread Iowa's front seven so Hyde will be able to pound it away in the middle. According to the articles, it seems like Meyer really would like to test Iowa's running defense so I would predict 40+ rushing attempts from the Buckeyes with 25-30 passing attempts (depending on the weather). Some deep play action passes will be expected to Philly Brown or Devin Smith.

Iowa's only hope to win the game is to dominate the LOS on offense against Ohio State's rotations of defensive linemen, along with zero turnovers.

Game Predictions
  • Ohio State runs for 200+ yards and 3 TDs
  • Braxton Miller completes 70% of his passing attempts
  • Iowa held to under 60 rushing yards
  • Iowa turns over the ball two times
  • Joey Bosa with 2 sacks or 4 QB hurries

Agreed. Sparty didn't have the speed to test the edges and unclog the middle of the field. Nothing all that hard about run defense if all you have to do is pack the middle. We'll thin Iowa out for Hyde to exploit or they can give up first downs and touchdowns on the edges.

Absolutely. With Philly Brown and Devin Smith improving, Iowa can't really clamp down and put 8 men in the box or Braxton Miller would have a field day with the passing game.

Unless Coach Ferentz doesn't mind stopping the run and lose by 49 points...
