This is so tits.

The iPad provided to me only has a meager 16MB - after apps and such there's barely enough room for a handful of my favorite music on the device. Now it's all there, and I don't have to pay for the privilege (yet). For now it has saved me the $20/year I was thinking of paying for Amazon Cloud Player.

Hopefully this is just a stopgap while they develop a native app, but Google seems to be doing webapps 90% of the time now for iOS. It looks a little rough on the large screen, but at least it works.

Now that I'm actually going to be using this, I'm gonna have to spend some time editing album art.

I also have invites if anybody is looking for one.

I was running into problems with Google Music Beta on my iOS devices. Basically, any new music that I added to iTunes (and subsequently GMB) only showing up in the full PC version of the site and not on my mobile devices. I had tried clearing my cache in mobile Safari, rebooting my devices, having Music Manager re-scan my library, and just about anything else I could think of.

Turns out I had to clear the database in mobile Safari. Instructions are quoted below for anybody who needs them in the future (including myself when I inevitably forget). For now, it looks like I'm going to have to take this step every time I add music to my library.

If you?re having trouble using the Music Beta player from your iOS mobile browser, try clearing the app database. Here?s how:

1. Navigate to the 'Settings' menu
2. Touch 'Safari' > 'Databases'
3. Select 'googlemusic' under 'music.google.com'
4. Touch 'Edit' at the top right of the screen
5. Touch the red - button next to 'googlemusic'
6. Touch 'Delete'

iPad games I've been playing this past month:

Battleheart - Wound up buying it. Reminds me of Dennis Green, "They are who we thought they were!" Choose four characters for a party, go fight a wave of monsters Golden Axe-style on a non-scrolling screen, collect your prizes, repeat. Fun for a couple hours, but it wore thin quick. Works on both pad and phone.

Catan HD - Great adaptation of the board game. Another hit along the lines of Carcassonne and Ticket to Ride (e.g., euro games). I play this more than anything else on my iPad. If you don't know how to play Catan, it can get your blood boiling. Bad players think they're getting ganged up on and fucked. The iPad version is faithful to that by mercilessly pummeling you over the head for choosing the wrong resources in the pregame.

Crimson - This came up as a freebie. Turn based strategy at sea with a steampunk theme. Fun and well implemented, but not my cup of tea.

Geometry Wars: Touch - GW on the Pad. Beautiful graphics, a pain in the ass to control. Lack of any positive feedback makes this unfun to play. Works on both pad and phone.

Naught - Cute and clever platform/puzzler. Free to try the first level. 15 additional levels are 99 cents. Works on both the pad and phone.

Small World - Made by Days of Wonder (Ticket to Ride). Another adaptation of one of their hit board games. Very deep game that can be hard to get into. I have a love/hate relationship with this one.

I need to replenish my PayPal account so I can pick up Puerto Rico HD. That's next on my list.

I saw this one and it didn't look very good. If it weren't made by Bungie I think it would have gone completely unpromoted and unnoticed.

My new favorite app is Mapquest. I know, I know it's old school, but this app is exactly what I wanted. I wanted an app that gives turn by turn directions via voice and this app does that plus it's FREE. it may not be as good as Garmin/TomTom/etc apps, but for free, I'm going to use this everyday.

CBS Sports now has an iPad app. At first glance, it looks like an uninspired scoreboard app. Look closely though, and you will see that also offers streaming of live events. Now of course, this does not include the NFL. However, I have Florida-LSU on right now, which has allowed me to put the blacked-out ABC game on my main screen.

This probably won't be too big a deal for football for anybody around here except me, but they are also promising streaming of regular season college basketball games as well, which will be nice.

EDIT: [strike]And of course, it's unusable. Instant crash.[/strike] Works after unininstalling & reinstalling the app.

The iPad gets a Facebook app, finally

Kind of like eating a peanut butter sandwich with no jelly, the most obvious app missing from the iPad has been Facebook -- until today. The New York Times reports that the site has finally confirmed the app's availability just in time for eager social networkers to like, subscribe and stalk from their slates. According to software engineer Leon Dubinsky, the app will highlight the multitouch awesomeness of the iPad, something that's unavailable from the website alone even from a touchscreen device. The folks at FB also added that some of the newly released features will be integrated into the iPhone app as well, making it a win / win for iOS fanatics. Consider it liked. Check out the brief PR after the break.
