OSU FOOTBALL Ohio State's Jim Tressel keeps cool on the Buckeyes' sidelines

Columbus- Ohio State defensive end Vernon Gholston chuckled Tuesday about watching the replay of the OSU-Washington game, when he saw Buckeyes coach Jim Tressel's full sideline celebration after Ohio State's third-quarter field goal block.
The way the television cameras caught it, the move was a jump with both hands raised, a jump and a right arm pump, another jump with his arms at his sides and several shouts of "Let's go," with Tressel winding up well onto the field.

OSU notebook: Tressel electricity lingering
Buckeyes still abuzz over coach's uncharacteristic leap on sideline in Seattle

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Four days removed from the Jim Tressel leap of joy, people are still talking about it. The way the usually reserved Ohio State coach went booster-iffic on the field after Kurt Coleman and Larry Grant combined to provide the play -- a blocked Washington field goal attempt early in the third quarter -- that was the catalyst for the Buckeyes' 33-14 win Saturday in Seattle.

Pulling a Tressel

To coin a Phrase
New phrases enter the college football lexicon every so often. Getting "Croomed" means to lose your job shortly after losing to Mississippi State coach Sylvester Croom. (See Ron Zook at Florida and Mike Shula at Alabama; it's way too early to say the same about Tommy Tuberville at Auburn.)

This week Spurrier coined "pulling a Jim Tressel." During a conference call Sunday, Spurrier said he voted LSU No. 1 in this week's USA TODAY Coaches' Poll.

"I can honestly say I voted them No. 1, how about that?" Spurrier said, according to The (Baton Rouge) Advocate. "I'm not pulling a Jim Tressel, either. I did vote them No. 1. Y'all can check it out."

Last season before meeting Texas, Ohio State's Tressel said he voted the Longhorns No. 1. It later was revealed Tressel voted the Buckeyes No. 1. An Ohio State assistant who called in Tressel's ballot took the blame for the mix-up.

Tressel consistent with ever-changing yet similar teams

- The national championship game is still a long shot. Just as it was in 2002, at this time of year.
But in some ways, this is starting to look like the past reborn at Ohio State.
That 2002 team won it all with a quarterback who was only asked to call the plays he could make. It was Craig Krenzel then. This team has won three straight using the same approach. It is Todd Boeckman now.
That team had a tailback who could dominate defenses when the Buckeyes went to the power game. So does this one. It was Maurice Clarett then. It is Beanie Wells now.
That team had a defense that carried the offense. So does this one.

Back in 2004 when the whole MoC mess was going down and all that turmoil was surrounding JT and the football program, somebody had posted his athletic department e-mail here on BP. One night at work, i e-mailed him fom my .af.mil e-mail address giving my support. Two days later i got an e-mail back from his address thanking me for my support and thanking me for my service in the Air Force. I obviously have no way of being absolutely sure it was from Tressel directly, but I'll never forget that e-mail.
