I'm so thankful for the ten years that Jim Tressel coached Ohio State. He put teams on the field that we all could be proud of. Off the field, he did a lot of wonderful things for the young people he worked with and in communities around the state. He made some mistakes, but he does not deserve all of the crap that has come his way. He will always be the Senator to me. :osu:

Okay, guys, I'm sorry. It's been a full day to say the least.
First, it's my baby girl's birthday today. She's five years old today, so I've been out of pocket all day smoking meat (she loves daddy's smoked ribs, lol)
Second, we had a death in our family. My wife's aunt passed away today of cancer. She was 52 years old.
So, obviously, I've been busy today. I settle down after everything today, and just decided to turn on ESPN....and I see that JT RESIGNED?!?
Sweeet cream on an Ice Cream Sammich!!! WTF?!?! I thought he was going to fight for his job and stuff? I'm trying to catch up on all the news, but WTF?!? Was he pressured to resign?

Let the cards fall...
With this whole debacle that has gone on at Ohio State with Tress, my impression of college football as a whole has soured. Jim Tressel was and still is my favorite coach of all time. I never enjoyed the sport more than when he coached at Ohio State. He kicked the [Mark May] out of Michigan. He won an improbable national title against a Goliath Miami team. Mind you, that 2002 season will never be duplicated, it was the most entertaining season of football I've ever witnessed......and probably will never again. He wasn't pretty at times with how he won, but he won a ton of ballgames.......which is all that matters in the end. He restored Ohio State's legacy as an elite program with relevance over a long span of time.
Sadly, I feel that the business end of college football took away the purity of his coaching philosophy (one that his dad engrained in his head) and became a driving force in his program. His old fashioned styles had a hard time meshing with the modern day recruiting and player relationship. He gave too many second chances and benefits of the doubt, I guess. It's a damn sad day to see Tress have to walk on someone else's terms.....he deserves much better. He's a legend and will one day fill up Ohio State's historical football books with the fervor that is used to detail Woody's days in Columbus. The Buckeye nation..........and college football for that matter lost a great one today.

In a different era, perhaps a parallel universe, Tressel coaches several decades, wins multiple titles, positively changes the lives of hundreds of young men, and leaves on his own terms as one of the all-time great legends of all of college sports. Okay, here's how I see this now, after hearing Brent Musburger just compare what happened to Richard Nixon (OMG)...
1. It's unfortunate that he had to step down. I do think he acted in the best interest of the school, players, AND the athletic department in making this decision. Desmond Howard (dick) said, "If he had acted in the best interest of the university last year, he'd still have his job." Must be a UM grad....duh.
2. I've said it before....his one 'oh shiat' moment caught up with all the attaboys he's done over the years. That's the unfortunate thing about those 'oh shiat' moments - nobody remembers the attaboys.
3. This is the best way for him and the school to amicably split - he can resign and still get a good boatload of money, the school can plead to the NCAA in August that they asked JT to do the right thing - thus lessening any heavy handedness that the NCAA may think about doing to the school (although the violations were about the coach).
4. Unfortunate that a guy who is a future hall of famer lost his job, but in the long run - how much will this change the outlook on the year for tOSU? I don't think it changes much - the team will still perform as they always do - they are tOSU after all, and as much as the head coach was the public face of the team, I think people will underestimate the team now that their leader is gone.
5. I hope the interim coach does well enough to secure a job and get that interim tag removed. That will help keep a more cohesive nature about the team. That being said - if they stay - the stigma of JT will hang over their heads for a while now.
6. Stay the hell away from Bo.
7. ESPN still sucks, and my opinion of the Columbus Dispatch isn't any better. Those two 'news' organizations alone helped today come to fruition.
EDIT: One other thing this will do - this will serve as a lesson and example to some of those other coaches that were not held in such high regard as Jim Tressel. If it can happen to him, it can happen to anyone. Let the college football community be warned. Hopefully this brings the intregity of the sport up.

I was born and raised in Ohio (other than 2 years abroad), but when it came time to pick a college I opted for another school that I thought fit my career plans better. Regardless, I grew up rooting for the Buckeyes and going elsewhere didn't change that. I've never gotten to see a game at the Shoe, and with my little sister starting at OSU this coming fall, I was ecstatic that I was finally going to be able to see some games there. Don't get me wrong, I'm still going to go..wouldn't pass it up for the world. But for a soon to be 22 year old who grew up with JT at the helm for half my life, the fact that he won't be leading the team out of the tunnel definitely takes some of the luster off the excitement I had when I found out a couple days ago I'd be able to get season tickets this year.
Did he screw up? Absolutely. But at the end of the day, I'm reminded of the coach in Blue Chips. Thank you Coach Tressel. Thanks for a era of great football, great plays and in many ways great character. I am not sure if this is an ironic end to your association with Ohio State, but it is a paradox in many ways.
This is a microcosm of what is evident in sports, society, media, and in so many other aspects of life today. IN NO WAY IS THE MEANT TO CONDONE WHAT HAS HAPPENED, BUT: It is evident, at least to me, that much of sports and much of society is culturally bankrupt. The ME that is way more important than team, the I need a bajillion tattoos to be relevant, the do what I need to do because I am a poor athlete from nothing, the lack of solid values and morals, the sticking up for your kids even when they are dead wrong, the I will get to the bottom of this no matter who or what, all of this sickens me.
I am a huge Ohio State fan, I am a huge football fan, I am someone who grew up with a mom and dad who hammered me if I strayed from what was right and what was wrong. But even so, Rules are Rules. Those poor football players only sold what was really theirs. That rationalization is just horse cookies. They knew from the first moment that that was wrong. It is common knowledge in all universities that compliance officers hold regular meetings and discuss this in depth. To use a car dealership to get a better deals because you are a Buckeye football player is against the rules and it is discussed time and time again.
For a coach to step forward and bend the truth or blatantly lie even for "your kids" is wrong.
All of these are misplaced values and defense mechanisms to get what you want. Ohio State is no better than any other school and in the same boat as programs that we laughed at and ridiculed.
I have a sour taste in my mouth and even though I view Coach Tressel in high regard and someone who made mistakes, I don't think my view of sports or OSU will soon heal. I may watch all of next season Ohio State football with the sound totally muted.
On a positive note, I wish Coach Fickell the best. I would love to see a DeSales grad succeed. I hope he displays, honesty, integrity and loyalty in his interim or long lasting head coaching career.
I am sure there are many who will find this post repugnant. There are many who will disagree in part or in total. You have the right to your opinion.
Ok now let the healing process begin.

I know Tress has to follow rules and handle these things through compliance but he probably felt disrespected, like "how could you guys do something like this?" and felt he should deal with it and upon further review realized how far the rabbit hole went and decided to keep it to himself.
I'm not condoning the actions but it's not like these players raped, murdered, stole (allegedly) or assaulted anyone so the Whitlock comments I read earlier are more in line with where I'm coming from right now. I'm disappointed and would like to see tOSU fix this the right way.
