Jim Tressel (National Champion, ex-President, Youngstown State University, CFB HOF)

THE OLD DAYS: Jim Tressel's coaching career began in 1975 when he was a graduate assistant at Akron. He was asked his duties, which prompted a 5-minute comedy routine from the normally dour coach.
He said he made coffee and copies and worked with the scout team while coaching the junior varsity. He had a huge responsibility at away games.
"In the middle of the fourth quarter, regardless of the score, I went and ordered the McDonald's. It didn't matter, it could have been tied and going to overtime, but I went and ordered the McDonald's," he said. "I'd hand the McDonald's out and then go get in the car and drive the coaches' wives home."
Asked how many wives there were, he said, "Four or five. In a station wagon, with wood on the side."
He also would take the game films to a shop on Carnegie Avenue in Cleveland and wait around outside until 3 a.m. to bring it back to Akron. He did get to work with the quarterbacks, and (sort of) helped with conditioning.
"I worked in the strength area, which you can probably tell," he said with a laugh, flexing his arms.
Tressel, who got his master's degree from Akron, also taught classes in bowling, team handball and swimming.
"I'm not a great swimmer," he said. "So we never left the shallow end. Because I wasn't going in for anybody."

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

It's hard to imagine now that Jim Tressel has coached Ohio State to two national-title games in the past five years, but at one time, Tressel's big duty was ordering Big Macs and fries.

Tressel's first coaching job was as a graduate assistant in 1975 at Akron, the Buckeyes' opponent today.

He was 22 years old and the only graduate assistant on staff, which meant he did all the dirty work.

"Making coffee, dittos (copies), scout-team cards, drove the coaches' wives to the away games," he said, listing his responsibilities. "In the middle of the fourth quarter, regardless of the score, I went and ordered McDonald's. It didn't matter what was going on, we could've been tied and going into overtime, I went and ordered the McDonald's so it would be there at the bus for the ride home."

Tressel holds the punt close to his heart
Coach expects Trapasso to play big role against Washington

COLUMBUS - The Ohio State Buckeyes spent a lot of time Saturday admiring that long, bright green carpet that now covers the floor of Ohio Stadium. Thanks to exceptionally poor field position, especially in the first half, they got to see just about all of that new FieldTurf rug and mustered only three points in those first two quarters.

I owe Jim an apology.

When he went to NO to study how to use two backs in a set, I said to myself "Bollocks. He would never put two backs in the same set."

Well, good ole Jim went and done it. We're seeing two back sets all the time. And now that we have three quality backs to play around with, he's really using them to his advantage. I love Jim Tressel.

Tressel deflects talk of 200th career win

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Bring up the possibility of Ohio State coach Jim Tressel notching his 200th career win Saturday at Washington, and he quickly changes the topic.

To him, such conversation is like talking to a golfer before he strokes a 4-foot putt for a possible victory, or talking to a pitcher in the eighth inning about a possible no-hitter.

No matter what has gone on before, there's no given in sports. Besides, Tressel remembers what the big question was in his first season as a coach at Youngstown State in 1986.

"Were we ever going to get win No. 2?"

He can laugh about it now. He and Virginia Tech's Frank Beamer are tied for third behind Florida State's Bobby Bowden (367 victories) and Penn State's Joe Paterno (365) on the active major college coaches' wins list. Bowden and Paterno top the all-time list, too.

For Tressel, the route into that race began with a stumbling start. He moved to Youngstown State after three years as an Ohio State assistant under Earle Bruce.

"You're thinking, 'Why does Earle do some things the way he does as a head coach?' " Tressel said. "Then you find out Earle Bruce knows what he's talking about."

A four-loss start at Youngstown State proved that being a coach was no snap. Tressel's first win came against Tennessee Tech, 30-6, on Oct. 11, 1986. The second one came six games later, 40-39 over Akron in the season finale.

Tressel recalled the details of the nine losses that season (five were by three points or fewer) as well as the fine points of the wins.

"You learn from every experience," he said.

Who is the doppleganger masquerading as Jim Tressel? That can't be JT that called a Post with 3 minutes left to play in the Washington game when OSU was up 10?
 thats funny, me and a few buddies were talking about how the next play was going to be a run because its Tressel but we wouldn't mind a pass.. I guess thats what the other team was thinking too? Good call JT.

Best part of this game, and the turning point, was on the blocked kick Tressel running out pumping his fists and yelling at the guys on special teams. Can't imagine how fired up that got the entire team, and from that moment we began to dominate, good win.
