Jim Tressel (National Champion, ex-President, Youngstown State University, CFB HOF)

From a Dispatch article posted by Basketball Junkie in the game thread:

In the locker room afterward, still wet from a Gatorade shower, Tressel reminded his jubilant bunch about what happened just three years ago. The 2004 Buckeyes won at North Carolina State to go 3-0 and climb to No. 7 in the nation. They fell hard in their next game, a loss to Northwestern.
Next up for these Buckeyes? Northwestern

It's good to know he hasn't changed.

The 2nd half of the UW game is the most excited I have been in a long time; except UM and Fiesta and Holy Buckey and 2002 Miami. JT showed me a lot(not that he owes me) that game. If can mix the playcalling and play defense like that we are going to a BCS game no doubt.

A lot of people have commented on how great it was that he got excited. Some have even noted the correlation between his getting excited and the start of a 24-0 Buckeye run.

The reason it's so effective when he gets excited is because he doesn't do it often. Think about it.

Young pups have to learn what it takes to compete at the highest levels.
Tressel must have really, really loved what happened.
He spoke pre-season about what might have been missing last year.
A toughness component. A competitiveness.

An acting job? :tongue2:

Clearly, you're not serious with the question. But you have given me the opportunity to clarify.

I am most certainly not suggesting that Jim Tressel's emotions on Saturday were not genuine. I would not even say they were played up. His emotions were simply unleashed.

He unleashes them rarely for two reasons.
  1. Because keeping an even keel is a more mature and more productive way to approach life.
  2. Because that which is scarce is more valuable...
When he does unleash the emotion, it has the maximum effect. And if he does it at the right time, the results are dramatic. I need not comment on whether he has shown the wisdom to choose the right time.

Longevity rare, even in champs

Jason Lloyd, Morning Journal Writer

WE were standing in the ballroom of a Chicago hotel. The official interview portion had already ended when Jim Tressel began talking about the longevity of college coaches. Basically, he said, there are Joe Paterno and Bobby Bowden and then everybody else.

Coaches don't last far into their 60s anymore, not with the demands of recruiting and the changes in coaching. With so many studio jobs available on ESPN, FSN, ABC, CBS and now the Big Ten Network, coaches can work half as hard, golf twice as much and actually enjoy their retirement years.

My I bring up Play Calling?

So we go back to Happy Valley this year. Hopefully we will have better weather conditions this time than last but even if we don't, there will be no excuse for not utilizing better play calling. Seeing their fans calling the play before it happens is unacceptable. With all the talent on that team back then, would it be to much to ask for more than a 24 dive on first down, a 34 dive on second down and another 24 dive on third down before punting?

Can anyone tell me the last time Ohio State ran a flea flicker? It might have been close to the era of when Ohio State last played a Division I-AA team before YSU. As many times as we went 24 dive 24 dive 24 dive then punt, I thought we had Penn State right where we wanted them only for their fans to call out our third down play and watch insanely as they are dead right time after time.

After having to run the wildcat in the Alamo bowl with Ted Ginn just running naked bootlegs, I thought for sure this would open up the play calling book a bit..... but no..... things only regressed. With the speed of Troy Smith, would it be to much to ask for JUST ONE Statue of Liberty per year? I think Robbie Shoenhoft might be apt to pulling that off during one of his limited stints in the next five games with his agiility.. (Make the opponent think we are losing our confidence in Boeckman?? Put Robbie in on third down?? Spread out the flankers..Saine the only tailback? Oh the posibilities....)

Granted I understand that running Chris Wells up the middle on numerous 24 dives is a educational process for him and the offensive line to start gelling together which I am all for. Wells also needs to see the holes which seemed to start happening at Washington. The Bucks have 5 games now in which to gel before the meat of the season. I don't think there's anyway Northwestern is going to pull a rabbit out of their hat. And neither is Purdue Kent State Michigan State or Minnesota.

Last year in the Michigan game, we really didnt show much more than we had all year as far as plays went. I was more than ready to see plays D E F and G in the N.C. As it turned out we shoulda stuck more to play A an B. Running it right up the middle on Florida was how UGA almost beat them and the only way the Bucks scored other than the Ginn kickoff return. Somehow we were STUCK on passing the ball for 5 yard gains just like in the Michigan game. We have to be able to adapt and improvise.....and then sucker em once in a while for a cheap six dangit!!!!

There's not one coach I would rather have than coach than Jim Tressel. There is no more upstanding straight forward intelligent coach anywhere to be found. If I could only tweak him a little bit, it would be to add a pinch of creativity. Show em your left and uppercut with your right!
