John Calipari (official thread of impending probation)

Calipari has one of the worst ratios of F4 appearances to national titles, Izzo is the only coach who has a worse ratio that I can think of that's made it several times. But the difference is Cal has had a lot more NBA draft picks on those teams compared to Izzo.

I would never, ever hold Izzo's Final Four:National Title ratio against him, given that every year he's made the Final Four since 2000, I've thought "Izzo could not possibly make the Final Four with a less athletic/talented team than this one."

Every fucking year, he ups the ante. My hats off to him.

Yep. My point exactly. Year in and year out, Calipari has rosters stacked with NBA players. Every year he's been there, an argument could be made that he has the most talented team in the country. And he has one ring in six years. The same number as Tubby Smith. That points to a guy that can recruit (buy?), but is lacking in the coaching/team building department. There's a reason this guy was a giant flop in the nba.
Yeah, it seems like most every year his team finds a way to melt down and lose in the F4 when talent-wise they should win. Most of the time it seems like his teams miss too many key FTs in the big games, but then this year it was more of a hero ball strategy gone awry.

This year's team he had was as talented and deep as any I've seen since early 90's UNLV. No reason he shouldn't have won it this year. Wiscy had a helluva team, but they should never have beat that team.

Watching this scumbag's face in the last 60 seconds of that game was the best thing I've seen in CBB in a long time. He looked like he was gonna cry.

Calipari says UK's top goal was to get players drafted, not win title

But try this one: Calipari performed a speech and Q-and-A session on Wednesday at Rupp Arena for the Kentucky-based animal crop/livestock/farming/agricultural company Alltech. It held its leadership convention of sorts at Rupp. Calipari spoke, and near the beginning of his speech (audio below), he claimed that getting as many players into the NBA Draft was Kentucky's primary goal this season. It wasn't winning a national title -- it was putting guys into the draft. That was the objective.

"How do we do this? It all starts with players first," Calipari said. "Their dreams become our dreams. Last year we started the season with a goal. You may think that goal was to win the national title! Win all the games! It was to get eight players drafted. 'Well, how can you be about your team if you're worried about players getting drafted?' Well, we kind of work it the other way. What are you dreams? What are you looking for? What are you trying to get out of life? How can we help you with that?"

I bet the President of the University loves that direction. It's not about an education but the NBA....

This douche has been there, what? Six years? And every year he's had, arguably, the most talented roster in the country. Sometimes by a decent margin. He has one title to show for it. That is underachieving on a pretty massive scale. Makes it clear that he is an outstanding recruiter, and a very average coach. At best.
He's not even a good recruiter. Ben Franklin is, though.

You really think the average UK fan actually heard that? I doubt if very many of them actually watch the news, scan the internet, and/or read a paper.

:slappy:

I doubt any of them have subscriptions to Foreign Affairs or the Financial Times, but I guarantee they lap up everything about UK basketball and will most definitely start foaming at the mouth once they phonically sound out what Calipari said. Should be interesting.
