John Calipari (official thread of impending probation)

Late to pick up on this one, but earlier this summer more proof that Calipari continues to lead a charmed life.

One of his players was never even charged with DUI or given a breathalyzer in spite of being blackout drunk & unconscious in the street. It appears falling outside of his car onto the street may have prevented him from being charged - apparently that removes the evidence that he was driving according to the sheriff's department.

This is an excellent idea to get this scumbag involved with high school seniors in a coaching situation. Nothing could go wrong here:frown:
Kentucky head coach John Calipari is expected to be named the head coach of the U.S. team for the FIBA Under-19 World Championships this summer, according to a report from ESPN’s Jeff Goodman and Jeff Borzello.

The tournament, which will be played July 1-9 in Cairo, will consist of a team of players 19 years or younger. So incoming freshmen, high school seniors, and current college sophomores will all be eligible to compete.

Report: Kentucky's John Calipari reached out to Knicks about president position

The UK coach is reportedly interested in filling in for Phil Jackson as Knicks team president

According to ESPN's Ian Begley, Calipari had his people reach out to the Knicks about the position, but they don't appear to be interested at this time. Via ESPN:

Kentucky head coach John Calipari reached out to Knicks through intermediaries to express interest in the Knicks presidency, per ESPN league sources. The Knicks do not have interest in Calipari at the moment, per league sources. Presumably, Calipari would want to coach as well if he took over as president. The Knicks parted ways with president Phil Jackson earlier this week. Current GM Steve Mills is handling the club's day-to-day operations and is expected to lead them through free agency.

Why would he want to take go to the Knicks where he would have to answer to the owner? He can just stay at UK where he is accountable to know one.

The only 3 reasons for the inquiry that I could think of are:

1. Like Billy Donovan he has a desire to succeed at the highest level, i.e. the NBA. He did have a losing stint with the 76ers back in the late 90s.

2. He knows something the rest of us don't know, like maybe the NCAA is looking into some Kentucky basketball violations, and he wants to "bail out" like Pete Carroll did.

3. He wanted to get a real lukerative (and unsolicited) offer from the Knicks to put pressure on UK to jack up his contract a few more million a year.

The other possibility is that the CBS story is just "fake news".

So I see 3 Kentucky players made the trip to Egypt with Coach Cal. But it is not a school-funded trip, USA basketball is bankrolling it. Nice way to get a head start by coaching your freshmen in Egypt over the summer.

I see #2 as the only realistic one. Calipari is more in the Nick Saban mold of total power and control that the NBA would not give him. It's a player's league and he can only buy so many players, unlike at UK.

Stop me if you've heard this before but a Cal coached team just lost to an inferior team in tournament play. In this instance, the U.S. Under-19 squad lost to fucking Canada in the World Championships. This man should thank God every day for Anthony Davis.

He probably forgot to sign the checks for the guys on the U.S. Under-19 squad so they probably felt unappreciated because they know the type of money that he usually pays his players.

Nine years in Lexington, countless 5* kids and lottery picks, ONE title.

Perusing the UK boards this morning, the patience appears to be wearing a little thin with Coach Cal. I see a lot of complaints about how his recruiting style, while often fun and flashy, does not breed championship chemistry because his teams never really have any "glue guys" that so many championship teams have. That he basically just recruits a bunch of mercenaries that use Kentucky as a pit stop to the NBA.

A lot of angst about next year's team, too. Most of the kids from last year's ridiculous recruiting class didn't really develop. However, that has never stopped them from bailing for the NBA in the past. The general feeling is that most of the core of this team is going to bail, leaving a bunch of "role players" and they don't have the typical loaded class coming in to back fill.

Awesome reading on this Friday morning.

The fuck did they expect? You can’t Saban titles together in basketball for that very reason. Chances are they ain’t winning another one. Potino only got one. Tubby only got one. Joe Hall only got one. And you know what? Adolph Rupp only got one after 1950. So fuck Kentucky fans and their devotion to collagen lips being on TV every 5 seconds. You got your one per coach. Now fuck off.

Ever see that Calipari '30 for 30' they did? He straight up says he isn't about winning titles; he's about getting "his" kids to the next level. Thing is, when he eventually leaves, there will inevitably be a step backwards. For all their angst, he's still winning 81% of his games, conference titles more often than not and has taken them to 4 Final Fours. Then, of course there's the fact that he's left each school he's left on probation in his wake.

UK basketball fans remind me a lot of many tOSU football fans in that it's "NC or bust" pretty much every year. That's a miserable way to go through life, because winning national championships is goddamned hard (except for Saban). I'd argue it's actually MUCH harder in basketball.
