Juniors leaving early - speculation thread

billmac91

Head Coach
With the thread about vince young saying he's going to stay, what are your predictions on other "elite juniors"...especially buckeyes if anyone has inside info

donte whitner
ashton youboty
quinn pitcock

I don't see Youboty, Whitner, or Pitcock leaving. Youboty is the most likely, but I think that he'd have to have a huge bowl game (a la Chris Gamble) before that were to become a reality. He's had a solid year, but nothing that should feed his intentions of leaving early.

the only possible candidates that I can see (and by candidates I mean underclassmen who are listed on the two-deep) are Datish, Holmes, Downing, Barton, Smith, White, Gonzalez, Patterson, Pitcock, Penton, D'Andrea, Kerr, Youboty, Mitchell and Whitner. Datish, Downing, Barton, Smith, White, Gonzalez, Penton, D'Andrea, Kerr and Mitchell obviously aren't going anywhere. That leaves Holmes, Pitcock, Patterson, Youboty and Whitner. I doubt Patterson and Pitcock have even thought about the idea of leaving early, but they could down the road. That leaves Holmes, Youboty and Whitner. I don't think Donte is a longshot at best to leave early, which leaves just Holmes and Youboty as the only possible options. Duane Long constantly brings up the fact that Santonio has a family to support and Ashton chose OSU because of how many corners they put in the league, so I think it is logical to expect that both of them will entertain the idea. I think in the end only Holmes leaves...Ashton could certainly benefit from another year under Coach Haynes. But we shall see...

Reggie Bush
Maurice Drew

I don't know that Brian Calhoun or Laurence Maroney really gain anything by staying around another year. They would pad their stats with another 1500 or 2000 yards and 15 or 20 TDs, but if they wait until the 2007 draft they'll both be in a pool that possibly includes Adrian Peterson, Michael Bush, LenDale White, Marshawn Lynch, and maybe even Michael Hart if he decides to bail early.

When you're #1 in the nation at your position, as I and Herbie and countless others believe Santonio is, you almost have to leave early; I'd love to see him come back as a captain and rewrite OSU's record books, but I doubt his stock can get any higher.

Youboty, on the other hand, can get much better, or at least could use another season with better performance than this year, though if he projects as a 1st-rounder I could see him going.

Whitner is too underrated this year and could easily become a sure-fire 1st-rounder after a senior year as OSU's marquee safety; I selfishly hope he comes back, since he's probably my favorite player on these Buckeyes.

What are the chances that Ginn will leave after next year? What sort of season would he need to become a 1st-rounder?

I think Reggie Bush will leave, and he will be the first pick in next years NFL draft over Leinart.

As for OSU, I think Santonio is gone. I'd say Youboty, but he's not having the dynamite season statistically that a junior CB often needs.

Honestly, I don't see any OSU guys except Santonio leaving early.

ginn is already a first rounder...he's certainly a first rounder next year barring injury..hes showcased what he can do with the ball on offense, and defensive cordinators prob feel like he could make a shutdown corner with proper teaching.....offensive and defensive cordinators won't put much stock into this years performance, they know what kind of talent he has, and what's been wasted due to poor offensive planning and inability to be allowed to play defense

After Leinart there's a real mess at QB among seniors this year. Croyle is an injury risk, so there's Cutler? Olson? I don't think it would hurt for Stanton or Quinn to come out this year. Next years' QB class will be crowded with Young, Vick, Jacobs, and probably Brohm. Does anyone really believe guys like Ball, McNeal, or Brad Smith will ever get an opportunity to throw a pass in the NFL? They're good college QBs, but franchises want the pretty pure-stats guys like Stanton, Quinn and Brohm.

People keep forgetting that Homes is a redshirt junior, i.e., he's a already senior academically. So if he declared himself eligible, he really wouldn't be leaving "early".

That's the same situation for Vince. He is "academically" a senior.

I hope Santonio stays around, but what else does he need to learn/gain, that kid is one of the better all around receivers that I have seen this year.

I would think that the DE from NC State, Williams might be gone. Why return to a team that is doing so poorly.

What about Stanton?
