Nugent adds muscle, distance on kickoffs to give Jets a leg up
By Dennis Waszak Jr., AP Sports Writer

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. ? If you're wondering who you should draft as the kicker for your fantasy football team, Mike Nugent has an easy answer - him, of course - and a cool video to support his choice.
The New York Jets' placekicker, who improved his leg strength during the offseason, recently filmed a commercial for NFL.com that fans are getting, well, quite a kick out of.

"It took a ton of takes and we did it a million times," Nugent said after a rain-soaked practice Tuesday. "There's certain things here or there that they probably help you out with, but, yeah, it took a while out there."

The commercial begins with Nugent looking into the camera and saying, "They say it takes strength and accuracy to be a great kicker. Check this out."

Nugent jogs over to four footballs lined up next to each other from at least 30 yards out and takes aim at six stacked blue buckets: three on the bottom, two in the middle and one on top. He kicks the first ball into the top bucket, the second into the one on the bottom left and the third kick knocks over the bucket on the far right. For the finale, Nugent lines a kick that knocks over the remaining buckets like bowling pins.

"I say, pick me," Nugent says as he walks off camera.

And who could argue with that?

The commercial, one in a series that features other NFL players such as Braylon Edwards, Andre Johnson and Jason Campbell performing incredible football feats, has fans wondering: Is it real?

"Yeah," Nugent said with a smile. "I guess you can say you don't hit every one of those exactly in a row every time like that, but yeah."

Jets' Nugent aims for longer kickoffs
Saturday, September 8, 2007 3:28 AM
By Katie Strang
(New York) Newsday

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. -- Last year, New York Jets kicker Mike Nugent proved he is accurate.

This year, the former Buckeye is out to show he has the leg strength to boot.

Nugent was 24 of 27 in 2006 and went on a hot streak at midseason, nailing 18 consecutive field goals -- including two from beyond 50 yards, a game-winner against Miami in week 16 and a 3-of-3 effort in the playoffs.

Despite last season's success, Nugent consulted with the Jets' coaching staff, particularly special teams coach Mike Westhoff, about gaining weight to improve his leg strength.

Nugent, 5 feet 9, put on 10 pounds in the offseason by working with a nutritionist to increase his calorie intake, and he built power through strength training and conditioning.

"Unless you're kicking touchbacks on every kickoff and hitting 65-yarders consistently, you can always get a lot stronger," said Nugent, whose work with Westhoff also helped him to realize the importance of kickoffs in game situations.

"Kickoff coverage is a huge part of this game," said Nugent, who had only two touchbacks on 74 kickoffs last season, and just one on 63 kickoffs in his rookie year. "With field position, the deeper we can get them, the better feel everyone gets."

Mike Nugent?s 50-yard field goal with 13:36 left in the first half was his 19th consecutive field goal and first of the 2007 season. Nugent?s 50-yard field goal was his third field goal of 50-or-more yards in his three-year career. He is now three-for-six from 50 yards or longer in his career.

Nugent?s consecutive field goal streak ended at 19, the second-longest streak in Jets history, when his 52-yard attempt late in the second quarter was wide left. Nugent?s last miss: 10/29/06 at Cleveland (52 yards). Last miss inside 50: 9/10/06 vs. Tennessee (30).

Nugent?s 21-yard field goal in the fourth quarter was the 22nd consecutive field goal attempt he has converted inside 50 yards (3-of-5 outside 50 during that time span).

NUGENT DOESN'T GET HIS SECOND CHANCE
By MARK CANNIZZARO

October 1, 2007 -- ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. - Mike Nugent kept looking at the scoreboard and yearning for another chance yesterday. No one wanted to be on the field at the end of the game more than Nugent, who uncharacteristically missed a 37-yard field goal attempt on the final play of the first half in yesterday's 17-14 loss to the Bills at Ralph Wilson Stadium.

When the Jets' offense stalled in the closing seconds, failing to get the ball close enough for Nugent to attempt a game-tying field goal, the loss became one that probably will occupy his mind for a while.

"I wanted to get out there," Nugent said of the potential game-tying try. "But honestly, the game shouldn't have been like that. I should have hit that (first-half) field goal and the game should have been tied at that point. We should have been going after the game-winner. I really need to do my job."

Nugent, whose 37-yarder hit the right upright and bounded backward, generally has been one of the most consistent Jets, which gives you an indication of the kind of day it was for the Jets. He entered the game having made 21 of his last 22 FG attempts, taking back to last season.

That, of course, is of little consolation now.

"By end of the game you see the score 17-14 and you're thinking all we needed was that three points at the end of halftime and the score would have been tied," Nugent said. "As I hit it, right away I felt like everything was perfect, and it started fading out and it was like there was a magnet to that upright."

Jets' Nugent surprised at missed field goal

Extra points

Straight on: Jets kicker Mike Nugent was surprised when his last-second, 37-yard field-goal attempt in the scoreless first half clanked off the right upright. He said the kick felt as if it would go straight, but thinks he knows what went wrong.

"I think I need to do a better job of playing the wind. I think I left it up there and let the wind take it a little bit," Nugent said. "It just started fading out, like it was going to some magnet in that upright. I was surprised because, usually, if you miss a field goal that short, something had to go wrong like you hit it off your toe or something."

Jets' Nugent driving kickoffs deeper after bulking up
By ANDREW GROSS
THE JOURNAL NEWS

(Original publication: October 5, 2007)
HEMPSTEAD - The shirt came off to reveal a muscular torso, particularly well sculpted over the shoulders and biceps. It's not necessarily the image one has of an NFL kicker, but an improvement the Jets' Mike Nugent insists was necessary.

"If you look at some of these guys, obviously kickers aren't big guys in this league," Nugent said yesterday. "(Adam) Vinatieri, (Olindo) Mare, they have some more size than me but they're not huge guys. So what are they doing that I'm not? It was mainly for kickoffs."

The third-year pro's improvement on the length of his kickoffs has been noticeable as the Jets (1-3) prepare for this week's crucial "road" game Sunday against the Giants (2-2).

Whereas the main knock on the 5-foot-9, 188-pound Nugent, who added 10 pounds of muscle in the offseason, was his lack of leg strength on kickoffs during his first two seasons, this year he's booted eight of his 16 kickoffs into the end zone, and that includes two onside kicks.

Jets' Nugent seeks consistency on field goals after shaky start
By Dennis Waszak Jr., AP Sports Writer

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. ? Mike Nugent wants to be the type of kicker the New York Jets can count on, regardless of distance or weather conditions.
"It's always been my No. 1 goal to get in everyone's minds that if we can't get down to score a touchdown, we're going to get three points at least out of it," Nugent said Friday. "That's the one thing I want to be, I want to be dependable."

Nugent entered the season regarded as one of the NFL's most reliable kickers after finishing last season by converting 18 straight field goals. He extended the run by kicking a 50-yarder against Baltimore in Week 2, giving him the second-longest streak in team history.

Things have suddenly gone wrong for Nugent, who has missed three of his last six attempts, including two of his last three. He missed a 37-yard attempt against Buffalo two weeks ago in a game the Jets lost 17-14. Nugent also hit the right upright on a 42-yarder just before halftime last Sunday which would've given the Jets a 20-7 lead over the Giants.

"To be honest, on both of them, I didn't play the wind the way I should've," he said. "Sometimes the flags don't really tell you what's actually going on on the field."

Jets' Nugent readies for next kick

Saturday, October 13, 2007

By J.P. PELZMAN

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. -- Sometimes when he misses a field goal attempt, Mike Nugent will have to study the tape a few times to figure out what went wrong.

That wasn't the case on his latest miss, a 42-yarder that he pushed wide left against the Giants on Sunday. He knew as soon as the ball left his foot.

"Right away," he recalled Friday, "I was disappointed in myself."

Nugent immediately realized he had forgotten to compensate for the 10-mph northeast wind that day.

"The wind was a little at my back for that one," Nugent said, "but it definitely was blowing right to left. Which is something you don't mind as a kicker, because you can just push it right in the wind and let it sail right in. And I was just disappointed with myself. I hit it so well in warm-ups and I played the wind. ... I went on the field like I was playing in a dome. I aimed it where I would have if it was a normal, non-windy day."

Until the past two games, Nugent had very few misses to analyze, as he had been close to automatic since missing two attempts inside 35 yards on opening day at Tennessee in 2006. He had converted 24 straight attempts of 50 yards or shorter before clanging a 37-yarder off the right upright on the final play of the first half at Buffalo on Sept. 30. That one started straight, but started to drift right as it got closer to the goalposts.

"I just didn't catch all of it that I could have," Nugent said. "I could have hit it better. ... On both of them I just didn't play the wind like I should have."

Nugent is 4-for-7 this season. He also missed a 52-yarder at Baltimore. He was 24-for-27 on field goals last season and 3-for-3 in the Jets' playoff loss to New England after his opening-day struggles.

"You're only as good as your next kick," Nugent said, explaining the philosophy he's used throughout his career. "If you dwell on the last one, it's just going to drive you crazy for the rest of the season. ... You've got to be able to bounce back."

Trip Home May Be New Start for Jets? Nugent
By GREG BISHOP
Published: October 16, 2007

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y., Oct. 15 ? Back in Centerville, Ohio, before he became a kicker, before his right leg paid the bills, Mike Nugent ran the triple-option offense. Mostly, he played running back. Sometimes, he played quarterback. Every time, he ran.

Folks there did not make excuses. They ran hard, and they ran straight, but one thing they never ran from was responsibility.

So as Nugent, the Jets? place-kicker, prepares to return to his home state this week in the middle of turbulent season for himself and for his team, lessons from his hometown are sprinkled in his answers.

?This won?t put a damper on going home,? Nugent said. ?We?re not dwelling on the record. That?s one of the keys to being unsuccessful, thinking about what happened yesterday.?

Still, this is not exactly the homecoming Nugent envisioned when he saw the Jets were traveling to Cincinnati to play the Bengals during Week 7 this season ? not after he finished last season by converting 18 straight field-goal attempts and 24 of 27 over all, good for the best percentage in Jets history.

CINCINNATI KIDS: Jets kicker Mike Nugent (left) and center Nick Mangold return to their Ohio roots tomorrow as Gang Green faces the Bengals in Cincinnati.

GOING HOME ON THE ROAD
By BART HUBBUCH

October 20, 2007 -- Growing up in the same town just 45 miles from Cincinnati, Jets teammates Nick Mangold and Mike Nugent didn't have much choice in the matter when it came to picking a favorite NFL team.

"I was a Bengals fan for as long as I could remember," Mangold said.

The same went for Nugent, whose family had Bengals season tickets until he started high school in the Dayton, Ohio, suburb of Centerville, and whose parents flew to Miami in 1989 for the Bengals' Super Bowl XXIII loss to San Francisco.

"Going to Bengals games are some of my earliest memories as a kid," the Jets' third-year kicker said.

Former high school heroes will have their own cheering sections for game vs. Bengals.

Growing up in Centerville, little Mike Nugent and young Nick Mangold dreamed of playing football for the Cincinnati Bengals.

Nugent thought he could be a kicker. Mangold yearned to be a ... quarterback?

"I had my fingers crossed until I realized that I couldn't throw the ball and had no athletic ability," Mangold said. "And I was a little bit heavier than all the quarterbacks. That dream failed pretty quickly."

Nugent played quarterback and kicked for Centerville High School. Mangold went to Alter and became one of the state's best offensive linemen.

Both stood out at Ohio State and were part of the 2002 national title team.

Neither guy is exactly NFL quarterback material.

Nugent is a 5-foot-9, 188-pound kicker who has made 7-of-11 field goals this season.
