Nugent helps Jets win, twice
After apparent game-winning field goal, a penalty forces New York kicker to back up 10 yards and do it again.

December 31, 2007

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- Mike Nugent was already hugging Ben Graham, thinking he had won the game for the New York Jets.

"Ben kind of whispered to me and said, 'Hey, there's a flag, so don't get too excited yet,' " Nugent said.

Moments after having a 33-yard field goal negated by a penalty, Nugent kicked a 43-yarder 5 minutes 13 seconds into overtime to give the Jets a 13-10 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs.

Mike Nugent drops in on local Business Expo
BY JAMI KINTON

MANSFIELD ? He may have reached stardom in the NFL, but former Ohio State kicker Mike Nugent hasn?t forsaken his small-town roots.

The Centerville native made a guest appearance at the Mansfield-Richland Area Chamber of Commerce Business Expo and Business After Hours, held Thursday at the Richland County Fairgrounds.

?He was just like the guy next door,? Chamber office manager Kathy Fox said. ?He was very approachable and polite. I think everyone was really pleased.?

Carrying footballs, posters and cameras, OSU fans lined up for autographs from the New York Jets kicker. The third-year pro graciously answered questions and posed for picture after picture.

Nugent said during the off-season he likes to spend his time in Ohio.

?A lot of my friends moved to Columbus, so it?s nice to be able to hang out with them,? said Nugent, 26. ?I love to play golf, too, but right now I have to travel to do that.?

Despite a busy schedule, Nugent said his life isn?t as hectic as many would assume.

?A lot of people think that we practice from 6 in the morning till 10 at night,? he said. ?We actually have a pretty good schedule. In New York, I live right across from the train station, so I like to get out and go to dinner and to shows a lot.?

Nugent, who has converted 73 of 88 field goals, including a 54-yarder, said the adjustment from college to pro football has been an easy transition.

?It?s just a little windier, but the New York weather is pretty similar to Ohio?s,? he said. ?I haven?t experienced too much more pressure. I think the real pressure is just what you put on yourself. The important thing is to just make sure you?re having a good time.?

The practice ended as usual with Mike Nugent and rookie FA Mark Myers kicking field goals. Nugent drove two 48-yarders into the wind and through the uprights. But then Mangini brought the team in and made one of his proposals. To win the secret prize, the players needed Nugent to hit from 58 yards. But the wind proved too strong, the ball didn't make it over the crossbar, and this time at least the players didn't get a bonus from their coach.

Nugent Kick Sets DeVito, Teammates Free

08/14 ? The Jets celebrated as if Mike Nugent had kicked a game-winning field goal.
And while Nugent didn?t actually win a game, his 48-yard make at the end of today's session meant no meetings and no curfew for the players tonight. They jumped and danced, hooted and hollered, and exited the premises just as quickly as they could.

KICKING CRISIS? NUGENT MISSES ANNOY MANGINI
By MARK CANNIZZARO
August 18, 2008

The first alarm occurred in the second quarter when JetsNew York Jets kicker Mike NugentMike Nugent was wide right on a 43-yard field goal attempt.

That was from a distance Nugent usually pretty consistently makes. Perhaps it was just a miss-hit, a push right. No harm.

But when Nugent clanked the left upright on a 23-yard attempt that would have tied the game at 13-13 as time ran out in the fourth quarter, that was inexcusable in the coaches' eyes.Thank goodness for Nugent it didn't occur in a regular-season game. If it had, there would surely be another kicker in camp the next day.

There is, of course, no guarantee there won't be one there tomorrow when the Jets resume practice, considering how annoyed Eric Mangini was about it after the game.

"Those field goals are pretty high-percentage field goals, in the 90 (percent range) league-wide," Mangini said. "Those you have to make. It's a chip shot.

"The 43-yarder is a lot tougher, but when you're that close (23 yards), those have to be like gimmes. It was a missed field goal from the 5-yard line to (tie) the game. You have to make it. We have to be able to execute that play. That's pretty standard operation procedure."

Mangini said he had planned to insert rookie quarterback Erik Ainge into the game in overtime for his first snaps, adding, "It's disappointing."

K MIKE NUGENT

Fourth-year kicker Mike Nugent broke the first rule in field-goal kicking when he missed a game-tying 23-yarder as time expired in Saturday's 13-10 loss to the Washington Redskins, hitting the left upright.

"A situation like that, I think I took for granted," Nugent said Tuesday. "Maybe I thought because it was a pretty short one it was automatic. You can never just assume it's going to go in every time. I was disappointed in myself.

"No matter what the distance, if it's a 50-yarder or a 20-yarder, you can't forget the mechanics. The snap was great. The hold was great, great protection, every other aspect was right. I need to do a better job."

Coach Eric Mangini said he had a little talk with Nugent on Monday, nothing extraordinary, just a reminder to stay focused.

"Mike is such a conscientious guy," said Mangini. "Nobody is harder on Mike than Mike is. ... I don't anticipate that happening again in the future."

Nugent, who missed an extra point and field goals of 30 and 34 yards in the opener at Tennessee in 2006, has been money since then. He hit 19 in a row (2006-07), the second-longest streak in club history to Pat Leahy (22 in 1988-86) and has connected on 75 of 91 in his career. He has hit 81 of 83 extra points.

Nugent appears to injure thigh on kickoff in first quarter
Associated Press
Updated: September 7, 2008, 2:47 PM ET

MIAMI -- The Jets' Mike Nugent left Sunday's game against the Miami Dolphins in the first quarter with a thigh injury, leaving New York without a placekicker on the roster.

Nugent appeared to suffer the injury on a kickoff in the first quarter, limping off the field after a short kick. He attempted a 32-yard field goal later in the quarter but missed wide right, again favoring the injury as he went to the sideline. The team said his return was questionable.

MIAMI - The Jets could be in the market for a kicker. Jay Feely, anyone?

Mike Nugent strained a muscle in his right thigh on the opening kickoff in Sunday's 20-14 win over the Dolphins, throwing the Jets' kicking game into chaos. He returned in the third quarter for a successful extra point, but his absence changed the complexion of the game.

Clearly hurting, Nugent missed a 32-yard field goal in the first quarter. In the second quarter, the Jets eschewed a 40-yard attempt and wound up scoring on Brett Favre's fourth-down pass to Chansi Stuckey. But Eric Mangini went for a two-point conversion (failed) because he didn't think Nugent could make the PAT.

The Jets seemed caught off guard, with no contingency plan for a PAT. On the sideline, backup QB Kellen Clemens, S Kerry Rhodes and P Ben Graham took practice kicks into the net. Actually, Graham worked on a drop kick. Even Favre was asked if he was capable of making a kick. No, he said.

Mangini never went to the bullpen.

"It's rare that you have a quality backup kicker in that situation," he said.

When a reporter suggested that it was easy to kick a PAT, that a 12-year-old from a Punt, Pass & Kick competition could do the job, Mangini cracked, "Maybe I'll work out some of those 12-year-olds. Maybe they could do better."

Graham handled kickoffs, but he was told to kick squibs. Clemens almost took the third-quarter PAT, but he was called back at the last second.

"I held the single-season record for most PATs in high school," Clemens said. "We scored a lot, but I was only around 50%."

Feely, a former Giant, was cut recently by the Chiefs and Dolphins. He's probably the most accomplished free-agent kicker.

Injury to Jets? Nugent Underlines the Value of Football Specialists

Strange but true. Joe Theismann, the former Washington Redskins quarterback who turns 59 on Wednesday, and Kellen Clemens, the Jets? 25-year-old backup quarterback, connect in a roundabout sort of way.

After Jets kicker Mike Nugent left Sunday?s game in Miami in the first quarter with an injured thigh, Clemens and safety Kerry Rhodes took turns practicing kicks into a net.

Neither Clemens or Rhodes attempted one because Nugent returned to the game in the second half, kicking an extra point in the third quarter. But Theismann once was pressed into similar emergency kicking duty, in 1985 against the Chicago Bears at Soldier Field.

Well, he gave it a try. His punt traveled 1 yard.

Jay Feely watched Sunday's Jets-Dolphins game from his home about 20 minutes away from Dolphins Stadium. Once he saw that Jets kicker Mike Nugent suffered a leg injury in the first half, Feely felt ready to spring into action.

"I was wishing I could jump in my car, drive over to the stadium and play the second half," Feely told Newsday last night.

He'll do the next best thing; Feely will be the Jets kicker when they host the Patriots on Sunday at the Meadowlands. The Jets signed the former Giants, Falcons and Dolphins kicker to a one-year deal yesterday. He will replace Nugent, who injured his kicking leg in the first half Sunday.

"When you aren't on a team, it gives you a different perspective," said Feely, who signed with the Dolphins in 2007 after failing to re-sign with the Giants. He was released by Miami during training camp, and was released after just one day by the Chiefs last month. "It's humbling when you don't play. It gives you a renewed enthusiasm and vigor for the game. I'm just thankful for the opportunity. I want to help [the Jets] win. Hopefully, I can come in and be a part of it."

Feely, 32, was signed after a workout yesterday morning.

Jets coach Eric Mangini declined to specify how long Nugent might be out. Mangini said Nugent injured his kicking leg on his second kickoff Sunday following Brett Favre's 56-yard touchdown pass to Jerricho Cotchery.

Mangini said the injury happened during the actual kick, which traveled only to the 19 and came off like a squib kick "that wasn't called," Mangini said. He wasn't criticizing Nugent, just making the point that as Nugent started to swing through the ball, that's where the injury happened.

The Jets finally announced the signing of PK Jay Feely, who wore No. 3 on the practice field. Mangini confirmed that incumbent Mike Nugent (thigh) is definitely out this week, but he refused to go beyond that. My gut tells me it might be some time before we see Nugent again. A couple of us asked S Kerry Rhodes about his kicking prowess. During the Miami game, Rhodes was spotted on the sideline, kicking into the net. Turns out that he missed the net, which is kind of like missing a one-foot putt. (Take it from me, I?ve missed a few of those.) Rhodes said it would be ?very scary? if he had to kick in a game. Don?t worry, Kerry, you won?t.
