“What they are saying”
In my four years as the starting place kicker for the Ohio State Buckeyes, I had the opportunity to work with hundreds of young athletes at various camps across the country. I have seen many phenomenal kickers, but none with the work ethic and drive that Ben Buchanan possesses.”- Dan Stultz, All Big Ten Kicker and 4 year starter for the Buckeyes. Stultz also serves as one of Ben's kicking coaches.
“ One of the best kickers coming out of Central Ohio over the 25 years I have coached. There were indeed some great ones during that time period.”- Robert Fresch, Head Football Coach, Westerville Central Warhawks describing Ben's potential to Division 1 College recruiters.
“His numbers are very impressive. (Ben Buchanan is) ...one of the top 3 kickers in the Class of 2008, if not the top overall. He definitely is one of the most physical kickers I've seen in the past couple years”.- Jason Svoboda, Administrator of Notre Dame's IrishEnvy. Ben attended Notre Dame's 2006 kicking camp this summer.

Quick update on Ben. His first game of the season was a record setting performance. The Warhawks won a defensive and punting battle 10-0 against Dublin Jerome. Field position from his punting ultimately played a major role in Central's victory. Ben also kicked a 47 yard field goal for a new Central High School record. He had six punts (all spirals) for a 40+ yard average and all three of his kickoffs were into the endzone for touchbacks; the longest was a bomb 9 yards deep into the endzone with a 4.3 hang time! Ben was selected special teams player of the week by his coaches and is also the starting wide receiver who is respected for his good hands and especially his downfield blocking.

Not ragging on current Buckeyes, but if Pettrey and Pretorious don't start htting FGs, an offer is almost certain.

Not making excuses for them, but considering we had 2 rookies out there, you have to expect some growing pains. I'm sure everyone remembers Nugent and Houston in 2001. Also, we've been spoiled by kickers and 40+ yards is no gimme.

That said, I'd still like to see Buchanan get an offer and think he'd be a good candidate regardless of our current kickers' performance. He'll be 2 years behind Pettry, so a redshirt would leave him with 3 years of starting.

Just a brief update. The Columbus Dispatch today (9/13/06) released the statistics for Central Ohio and Ben is the Top Punter for all 6 divisions with a 48.3 yard average on 20 punts for 966 yards. He has 6 more punts than his closest competitor and nearly 5 yards more per punt. I suspect he also leads the state of Ohio. His goal is to keep pace with AJ Trappaso and he's very close with 4 times as many punts.

The projection for '08 used to be few offers, but with several transfers already, we will have plenty of offers to keep JT on his 20/20/20/20 pace.

Unless I'm mistaken, according to our scholarship breakdown page, '08 schollies look mighty thin. Right now, the class that will make way for '08 replacements--our current junior-eligibility class--has only nine scholarship players. We have 21 ships available for the '07 recruiting class, and if we use them all, that will give us 76 ships used before getting a single '08 LOI. Unless we bank 5-6 ships from the '07 class to use for the '08 class, along with getting 5-6 "casualties", we won't be anywhere near 20 ships for '08.

We did the math several times for our 2007 wishlist blog. Prior to Frost, Haw, Hoobler and Roberts leaving we thought the '07 class would be closer to 18. Throw in a junior leaving early or two and/or two or three tranfers and add that to the 3-4 we will bank this year and that will give us around 17-18 by the time we get to NLOID for the class of '08. I could very well end up wrong, but JT seems to do a pretty good job of keeping each class anyhwere between 17 and 21 LOIs.

Added thoughts on Ben...

I had the pleasure of scouting the Jonathan Alder -vs- W.Central(scouting Alder) last friday....by myself thanks to my scouting partner backing out!!

Anyway, Alder gave them a little bit of a butt whooping....however I know for a fact that the main notes I made about WC was the fact that the RB had very good speed and that the kicker was unbelievable...and this is without every hearing of Ben.

All of his punts were picture perfect spirals and turned over after about 30-35 yards of carry...meaning they still had to come down!!!

He attempted a 60 yarder before the half and missed it by about two yards.....just short!!

He is the best HS kicker/punter I have ever seen...and I played with Groom in highschool!! Of course Andy made huge strides the year after I left.

Anyway, Ben should be a priority for any Div I university that uses a kicker or punter
