K Tyler Durbin (Official Thread)

I've mentioned it before.....but I LOVE that we do this on KOs. That's how damn cut throat this staff is. Sure, we could just blast it through the endzone and give it to you on the 25. Or we'll force you to return it by kicking it just short of the endzone near the sideline, and bet you can't even get past the 15.

Generally agree with one caveat: There are times, like when up by a score late against a tough opponent, where avoiding the risk of the out of bounds kick or the long return is worth the blast through the end zone.

K-I-C-K-E-R: Walk-on Tyler Durbin is making sure Urban Meyer learns his name
3:27 PM ET
Austin Ward ESPN Staff Writer

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The former soccer player arrived on campus the day his team won the national championship and Urban Meyer didn’t really have much reason to bother learning his name for more than a year after that.

Finally, a thumping punt on the first day of Ohio State’s training camp in August caught Meyer’s eye -- and earned Tyler Durbin an introduction.

Famously opposed to either punting the football away or settling for a field goal, Meyer may or may not have made it a point to remember the name that day. One month later, Meyer continues to act like he doesn’t know it and still maintains that he isn’t exactly sure where the walk-on came from, but now that all comes with a smile since Durbin has unexpectedly become the starting kicker for the No. 4 Buckeyes.

“Kicker: I think you spell that kicker, K-I-C-K-E-R,” Meyer joked. “I love this guy, but I’m still giving him a hard time. His last name is Durbin.

“He doesn’t look like a football player and I don’t know where the hell he came from, but he’s really good.”

Cont'd ...

It'll be interesting to see whether Nuernberger gets his job back when he's healthy. Durbin's getting that PAT when the snap and hold were completely botched was very impressive.
I doubt if he will.. It will be a while before he gets completely healthy if he does have a groin strain or whatever. Nuernberger was not that consistent last year and I would not try and fix a good thing as long as Durbin keeps going like he is.

SKULL SESSION: TYLER DURBIN BULKS UP, J.T. BARRETT'S PAIN MANAGEMENT, AND THE AVERAGE WORTH OF AN OHIO STATE FOOTBALLER

WHY'S A KICKER NEED BICEPS? You're damn right we're leading with a kicker profile, because frankly, I'm not over the story of Tyler Durbin.

Here's a guy who played collegiate soccer. After transitioning to civil engineering studies, he only sent a homemade tape to Ohio State because his girlfriend and her family were big Buckeye fans.

From ydr.com:

Durbin kicked a school-record 11 extra points in the season-opening victory against Bowling Green. He made a career-long 40-yard field goal last week at Wisconsin. He's made all eight of his field goals this year and leads the Big Ten in kick scoring.

Meanwhile, he's packed on 35 pounds to increase his leg strength and provide needed bulk to survive blocks and tackles on kickoffs. When he arrived coaches and teammates joked that he had the "smallest biceps that ever entered the Ohio State weight room."

"It's been crazy, the whole situation ...," said father Martin Durbin. "It's just shocking to me. The biggest (soccer) crowd he played in front of was maybe 2,500 people. I can't even imagine this now."

I have been in the Ohio State weight room (please don't arrest me, Urban; I don't do jail well), so Tyler can rest easy knowing his biceps weren't the smallest ever to enter the sacred training ground.
