Kirk Ferentz (four more B1G COY Awards than Tressel and Meyer combined)

SHOCKING!!!

What is shocking to me is who the award is named in honor. I had never heard of Dave McClain. Wikipedia tells me he was born a Buckeye and was an assistant under Woody (pretty cool), but also that he was a head coach in the B1G 8 seasons; https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dave_McClain_(American_football). I've also learned that he amassed a .522 winning percentage while leading the Badgers (46-42-3 overall, 32-34-3 B1G), going 1-2 in the post-season. Seems like a thoroughly mediocre coaching record based on wins-losses.

I'm still searching through his lifetime bio to find where it mentions how he changed the way football was played in the B1G, Midwest and/or CFB. Or that maybe he spent his spare time feeding the homeless in Madison. Possibly he invented the internet. Oh wait, that's a discussion for another thread.

As I continue my research into the mystery surrounding the naming of the award, this is starting to make sense to me now. An award for the mediocre, by the mediocre. :roll1:

Kirk Ferentz claims Dodd coaching honor

In the middle of the month, Kirk Ferentz was named the Eddie Robinson Coach of the Year. Two weeks later, the Iowa boss is on the receiving end of additional coaching hardware.

Wednesday morning, the organizers of the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl announced that Ferentz is the recipient of the 2015 Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year award. Described as “college football’s most coveted coaching award, ” the Dodd Trophy “honors the head football coach whose program embodies the award’s three pillars of scholarship, leadership and integrity, while also having success on the playing field throughout the season.”
