Kobe Bryant Saga/Trade Discussion

OSUBasketballJunkie;873380; said:
From all reports it sounds like LA is going to sit on Kobe right now........Kobe doesn't have much leverage other than sitting out the year......he still has 2 years on his contract...

Yeah, Buss really isn't going to empty the seats out at Staples, he knows Bryant will play, if for no other reason to keep himself marketable. Between endorsements and the fact that teams would have questions, sitting out really isn't that much of an option for him.

I was hoping to see SOMETHING happen prior to the draft to make this team more than what it was, a .500 team, at least an improvement, not to please kobe but to give the fans hope, but alas, nothing.

MediaTakeOut.com™ 2007 - SPLITTSVILLE!! Kobe Bryant Prepares To File For Divorce!!

rumor or not...
a professional athlete marrying w/o a pre-nup..
tsk tsk

:smash:

August 03, 2007. A few months ago MediaTakeOut.com reported that Kobe Bryant and his wife Vanessa were facing marital problems. Well it now looks like a divorce is imminent.

We spoke with a person extremely close to Kobe Bryant, who claims that the 28 year old ball player is ready to put an end to his 6 year marriage. The insider tells MediaTakeOut.com, "They've been trying [to make things better] now for more than a year, but it's just not working out ... Kobe's in the process of moving out [of their home] and both are ready to officially end things."

But if you're expecting fireworks in the divorce battle - you might be disappointed. According to our inside source, Kobe and Vanessa will likely settle everything quietly. Our insider explains, "There's very little for [Kobe and Vanessa] to fight over. Since there was no pre-nuptial agreement, Vanessa's entitled to half the marital assets ... Besides, Kobe stands to make a lot more money in the years to come - and that will be all his."

During his professional career, Bryant is estimated to have drawn in close to $200M in earnings. And the superstar's future earnings look even brighter. The Lakers currently owe him $88.6 million in salary over the next four seasons. And he has a number of very lucrative endorsement deals - including one with $18M left on it from Nike.

Bryant has largely destroyed the Lakers chances for greatness. He'll want to move on to a place where he can rely on others to win games but score the most points and make himself the hero.

I haven't read this entire thread but I have to say that I am less impressed by Kobe Bryant than most people I know. He is very much a gifted athlete in many ways but, in my mind, his incredible self-centredness makes him unable to work as a member of a team.

Just think about the nonstop crap he generated between himself and Shaq. That pairing had the potential to be, perhaps might have been, one of the best inside-outside pairings of NBA talent ever. Bryant is the one responsible for its end.

It doesn't matter how much a player scores if he destroys a team's morale and the overwhelming evidence suggest that is what Bryant does.

Lakers owner Buss talked specific trade options with Bryant

Months after Kobe Bryant demanded a trade, Lakers owner Jerry Buss openly talked about the possibility of dealing his star player this past offseason or even before February's trade deadline.
"I would certainly listen," Buss told Lakers beat writers on Wednesday. "At any time, I think you have to do that with anybody. It's just part of the game, to listen to somebody who has a dissatisfied player that you think is going to fit. You can't keep too many loyalties. You've got to look at it as a business. He looks at it the same way I look at it."

Rumors on talk radio are that

1) They have a potential deal in place.
2) Kobe has cleaned out his locker.
3) Kobe has played his last game as a Laker.

Take talk show rumors for what they are worth, but he's got this mysterious knee injury that's preventing him from playing.

Still nothing new online... though it is interesting that Ben Gordon, if not resigned by 10/31, would become a restricted free agent next summer... everyone knows how those expiring contracts can be handy in a trade situation

570 AM is speculating the Bulls or the Mavs

This really is no shocker, Buss has always made it very clear that no player was bigger than the team. However, I think going to the Mavericks could be bad, the Bulls are eastern conference, we only see them two times a year, and if we see them in the playoffs that's a good thing, however, if he goes to the Mavs, I wouldn't want to face him and Dirk in the playoffs. The Mavs could easily offer up 2 players (Howard and Terry) to match salaries and a couple draft picks and maybe get the deal of a lifetime.

While I've been a Laker fan since I could crawl, I find myself in a flux situation. I grew up on the era of "team-play" with Magic and the fellas. To see an in-grate and self-centered prick like Kobe at the helm it makes it difficult to root. Whereas, living 45 minutes south of Portland, I see a team of youth that acts like they're a "team". I know that's almost anathema to go from the Lakers to the Trailblazers, but on the flip side, the potential of seeing Mr. Oden in years to come is quite appetizing.
