Krakauer - Where Men Win Glory - The Odyssey of Pat Tillman

If there's one thing I'm not, it's a liar!

So my girlfriend at the time made up the story even though she didn't know who Pat Tilman was??? That makes a lot of sense.

I can understand you being [censored]ed if you are one of Pat Tilman's friends and don't want to believe he would do something like that, but sorry to break it to you that he did and there is no reason for me to believe my girlfriend would make up that story.

I don't know your girlfriend or what she's capable of or what her fantisies might be. Maybe she wanted to push your buttons for leaving early that night. I know/knew Pat and he was never the studly frat-boy jock type out to prove his prowess so publicly. Nor was his ego great enough to need a hearld to announce his presence. That just wasn't Pat. It didn't happen, Dude, not with Pat.

What does reagdog have to gain by making something like that up?

Crazy shit happens when people get drunk (this isn't even crazy, just kind of stupid). I've heard of far worse things happening while people drink. Heck, I've seen far worse things happen.

True enough, normally, for many someones else. But Pat had rules for interactions and Pat's rule #2 was; Always be respectful and discreet with your partner(s). I think, always, always, ALWAYs use a condom was somewhere between 10 & 15. If you think with the big head the little head will get taken care of, was also in there somewhere.

Pat also had like a 3 beer limit and if you know anything about Guiness, you know you can't drink much more than that. Pat didn't do drunk. He had a natural ongoing high.

I don't know if the lady was playing a game (they do that sometimes) or if the jerk described was an ignorant wannabe pretending to be someone he wasn't.

Look I was just surfing, checking out the latest hype on the Krakauer book when I landed here, found Reagdog's post and started ROTF LMAO. If you ever knew Pat you would know with certainty - it didn't happen - not as described and/or not with Pat. He had way too much self control, especially after that brawl during senior year (high school) which landed him in juvie for a month or so and put in jeopardy his scholarship at ASU. All that, among other things, are part of what made him so unique and extraordinary.

I'm not accusing Reagdog of anything - except being misinformed or misled.

Did you consider the possibility that "the guy's friend" was BS'ing her?

All I can say is that my ex-girlfriend wasn't a liar and she didn't pull the story from where the sun don't shine. She was a 19 year old southern girl from Florida who played soccer and was the furthest thing from a drama queen or attention whore.

The bar Fumbles had a $5 cover and penny beers. Everyone in there got hammered beyond all belief. Drunk people can do things out of their normal behavior. I also don't think Fumbles sold Guinness at the time and I know they didn't sell hard alcohol. Penny beers were draft beers of Bud Light or Coors Light and that's all they offered besides shots of some nasty wine that they could sell with their limited liquor license.

Look Calabashe, I didn't mean to offend any of Pat's friends or family by posting the story, but I'm not going to be called a liar either just because you can't imagine Pat doing something like that. From everything else I know of Pat, he was a great guy and a great American. So I apologize if my post offended you.

I can probably track down my ex-girlfriend if that is what this is going to come down to. My wife probably won't like that, but I'll do it.

Exactly. If she didn't know Tilman, she couldn't say whose crotch it was on her knee absent the "friend" saying it was him.

And how absurd to think a type A jock would do an aggressive move like that? :paranoid:

I'm looking forward to the book. I've read Into Thin Air and his book about fundamentalist Mormons (the name of which escapes me; Under the Banner of Heaven, maybe?) and Krakauer, in my humble estimation, does a good job of making calls inside the lines. The whole Tillman mythos has always rung kind of hollow for me and I've read that he was killed by some of his own guys who took advantage of an opportunity to shut his mouth. No idea whether that's true or not and I haven't really cared enough to go and research the whole thing. I'll read it with an open mind and, hopefully, the book will clear up the ambiguity with the shooting and investigation(s).

Pat Tilman did look like every other guy at ASU. I can see how somebody can mix him up with someone else.

A few drinks will turn a regular into a predator. Not saying that is the case here. But we have all been in enough bars to see it happen plenty of times.

And as for him being more a hero when the evidence suggests he may have been murdered, that would suggest otherwise. A kid from my home town drowned in the Euphrates while trying to save a buddy. That kid is a hero.

OK. So you are saying that she looked at pics after his death and said "that was the guy", as opposed to some guy in a bar saying "That is Tilman" and that was why she thought it was him??

If she had never heard of him, how'd she know that it was him is all I'm asking.

The night it happened, she described the guy who set his package on her knee. It was Pat Tilman's description. She also said his friend told her it was Pat Tilman.

I never put together a photo lineup of Pat Tilman and 5 other big blonde haired dudes to verify if that's what you are asking.

No. Just that she say a pic of him and said "Yah - it was him."

Guys have been known to impersonate the famous to get laid.

It wasn't that big of a deal to me where I thought enough about it to start an investigation and find a picture of Pat Tilman to interrogate her about it. If I thought I would have needed evidence of this happening 12 years after the fact, I would have taken better notes.

Maybe it was fucking Tarzan??

Just in case you're wondering Gator, I also don't have fingerprints or DNA to prove it either so no need to ask.
