<westbuck04> Genron...hmmf, he's not close to this or anything... </westbuck04>:roll1:

Hopefully we get another report that tOSU's visit goes swimmingly as well.

He wasn't that close at all. Family friend, not blood related, not a factor in LJ's decision. I don't care if you believe me or not. Ask Bill Greene, who knows Genron personally, how much he "mattered" in terms of LJ's recruitment.

If you knew some of the stuff he said about Tressel and the OSU program off the record, you wouldn't care for him, either.

Good luck to LJ at FSU! Always hard to pull a kid away from his childhood favorite...

There have been statements made that ONLY Taver Johnson and Paul Haynes showed up, and "maybe" that was what pushed things over the top.Petersen was apparently with Linder, Hazell with Louis, and JT who knows. We'll see what comes from this, but it is pretty surprising that Tressel wasn't there trying to close on a top 5 recruit, no matter happened the day before with the FSU staff.

If things were even, or slightly tipped towards FSU, why wouldn't JT come in and try to close?

I said before that new coaches have a recruiting advantage because they can sell a conceptual future without fear of being reputed. If a major program is down they can sell the idea that they are bringing about change. Granted, Fisher was a strong part of the FSU past, but with Luc and Joyner he has solid evidence of change.

This is pretty much what happened. I was told Joyner would have been part of our class if Bowden and Andrews stuck around another year.

And it looks like Joyner wasn't the only one thinking this way, given the timing of the Jeff Luc commit and some of the other chatter going on right now about other big-time recruits. More evidence that Bubbah was running that program into the ground.

Two of our most coveted DB prospects (the other being Shaw) off the board in a matter of weeks, in the process making their decisions way earlier than their initial timetables. What really blows is that tOSU was in the driver's seat at some point in both of their recruitments. I really feel bad for JT and the staff. I don't envy at all the amount of work they put into courting these kids and feeling good about their chances at one point only to get the Dear John letter in the end. Oh well, can't get 'em all. Here's to hoping for better results with the rest of this class.

Really wanted to see Lamarcus as a Buckeye, but we'll be fine. Good luck to Lamarcus and maybe we'll see him down the road. GO BUCKS!!!

Best of luck at FSU. I hope this is not the beginning of our annual implosion of missing out on top recruits as signing day approaches.
seriously people, I've read this post a half dozen times already. What does Lamarcus have to do with Seantrel? Matt? Jonathan?

Could we miss on them? Sure. But this 'oh noes, the sky might be falling again' attitude is really frustratin.

We knew all along that Joyner adored FSU. His decision has no relevance to the remaining targets, any moreso than landing him would have been a boon for the rest of our recruiting.

I agree with you, I also read Bill had to say about Genron. But for those that don't have access to Bill's comments, Genron did make himself appear to be the "guardian" figure in the recruiting process, so I can't fault anyone for believing that.

Regardless, I don't think Joyner was trying to play games when he said he eliminated FSU. They were making a transition and he reacted quickly.

He has a chance to play (maybe immediately) for his childhood favorite and help rebuild them to prominence. None of us would pass up that opportunity. I'm sure LJ is completely confident in his ability to get to the NFL regardless of where he plays.

Annual?

Reality check: Every major program "misses out" on top recruits as signing day approaches. It's awfully miopic to think it only happens here...

I agree with your thoughts the only thing I would like to add is we are consistently in the lead of prize prospect in December and January before we fall off. Then the negative recruiting takes over and we lose these kids, and we usually don't have a good come back for the negative recruiting.

That's because we do not negatively recruit. But in Joyner's case, I don't think this had much to do with negative recruiting. Jimbo Fisher is a good guy in the Bobby Bowden mode, and FSU was Joyner's childhood favorite, after all.

I am not subscribing to the Chicken Little theory here...my point is that over the last several years, most of the top OOS recruits that did not commit to us early went elsewhere at the end. Yes, this does happen at every major college program, however I think everyone would like to see us close the deal instead of USC, Florida, etc. I'm not negative when it comes to recruiting because I do think the staff does a tremendous job, but you would have to be blind here if you did not see that this has been the case over the last several recruiting classes. Some of those classes, like last years, were phenomenal but we all still hope for them to be better when the opportunity presents itself.

That being said, there is still two months before signing day and I am still hoping to see guys like Henderson, Floyd and James end up as Buckeyes. I just want to see the staff close the deal this time.
