LB A.J. Hawk (2x All-American, Lombardi Trophy, National Champion, Super Bowl Champion)

Maybe the styles come into play....Hawk is relentless and unabashed. Team man. I still think our bowl chances have a lot to do with this.

I'd say it's probably between Hawk and Johnson at this point. Hawk's putting up big tackling numbers, but Johnson and those 7 forced fumbles already will be tough to overcome.

What about A.J.?

As we all probably know, #47 will be retired during halftime when Penn State comes to town. Chic Harley is certainly deserving of this honor but it presents an interesting situation. A.J. Hawk is an oustanding linebacker that has an opportunity to take the Butkus, Lombardi, and Walter Camp awards. Not only may he become a well decorated linebacker, it is still possible he returns for his senior year. So if he continues his wreckless assault on opposing players and becomes deserving of his own jersey retirement, how will it be handled?

Nothing at all against AJ, but he'd have to be out-of-this-world amazing over his last 16 or so games to warrant having his jersey retired. We've had many awesome players who didn't get theirs retired and I don't think he'll do enough to do so either.

Think about how silly (and that's putting it mildly) what you're saying is. All--repeat, that's all--of the others who have had their numbers retired (Horvath, Janowicz, Cassady, Griffin, and George) were Heisman Trophy winners. Hawk may win a defensive award, but won't win the Heisman, so this is a totally moot point. Harley will be the only non-Heisman winner to be so honored, because his fantastic performance directly led to the building of the very stadium in which he will be honored...had the Heisman Trophy existed during his time, he surely would have won it also. Bottom line, if you don't win a Heisman (aside from Harley), you won't get your number retired.

Hypothetically, because none of us are fortune tellers, if A.J. wins First Team All Big-Ten three consecutive years, Butkus, Lombardi, and Walter Camp (twice each), and First Team All-American two consecutive years; you don't think he would--at some point down the road, of course--be deserving of a retired jersey? That would be one of the most decorated defensive players in college football. Besides, it will be a long time before another defensive player wins a Heisman. That is just the way they vote. That may sound extremely far fetched, but what if it happened?

Not gonna happen, so it's not really worth contemplating, except in our dreams. If AJ managed to win all those awards, then I'd agree with you. Until then, we can just be glad that he will have been the last one to wear the number 47 (which seems like getting it retired).

the same way we remember the big kat, when you tell your kids about legendary guys you mention archie then andy

You're kidding us here right? "Archie then Andy" in legendary terms? No way is Katzenmoyer a top-5 linebacker here in the past 30 years let alone in the history of the program.

If any non-Heisman winner outside of Harley gets their number retired, they will probably be named Speilman or Doss. That seems about as likely as Lydell Ross winning the Heisman, and even if one of the two does get their number retired, it will probably be many years from now.
