LB Dante Booker (Official Thread)

I have seen in numerous places that Booker has been up to as much as 250 lbs his Jr. year. I think his current and ideal playing weight is around 230-235 lbs. All this talk about the next great OSU LB; by the time he is an everyday contributor, 2 years in an elite S&C program, with his frame, you are looking @ a 265 lb DE and V. Gholston clone.

:smash:
He's a top 5 OLB! Why would we put him on the line when, #1 DE has plenty of talent and depth and #2 we have been complaining all year about LB depth. It makes no sense to take one of our most talented LBs and change his position. Theres a reason the staff went after the top LBs in this class.

For real, why is it that in every committed LB thread on the recruiting board, someone wants to move a LB to DE? We have 4 DEs this year who all played a bit. All of them were Freshmen and Sophomores. Why???

Exactly what i was thinking. But, there is a good chance spence and washington will be gone after next year. While bosa should be gone in two and might spend his last year at tackle. In all likelihood at least one of our '14 class will start at DE their soph year. But isnt that why we have DEs on the recruiting board?

I committed this sin in the McMillan thread so allow me to defend my egregious actions. :sneaky: On a serious note, when I mentioned it it was an organic evolution of the conversation stemming from the fact we were discussing his frame and if he added enough weight in a college S&C program and who knows hits a growth spurt bam your looking at a guy at 260-270 up from 235. I'm not projecting it or taking odds on the corner but in a thread about a guy I am interested in I might entertain fantasies. I feel that it becomes annoying when it gets dropped all the time but then again I can't stand the "instant freshman impact" every recruit is going to have and the discussion that always entails. I get excited about guys to a point knowing 50% or more won't be starters let alone NFL draftees, big award recipients etc. but again that ties into peoples fantasies. Back to Mr. Booker!

I hear what youre saying, and Im not trying to seem like I'm attacking you,but it just becomes weird that each time we get a high end LB, with some size, instead of rejoicing some fans automatically think the kid should be put on the line. Yet when you check the Buckeye football thread on the season, the biggest gripe is LB play. Seems kind of counter productive to want elite LBs, but then when the staff gets them we want them on the line. We should be enjoying the fact that Guys like rakewon and dante can come in and possibly challenge for time, or get a chance to learn the game from a coach like Fickell. And I certainly agree that I get frustrated with the talk of frosh making instant impact, because the likelihood of it happening, no matter the star ranking, is quite small. Theres no problem in fantasizing and i apologize if I have killed some of your dreams, as that is not my intent

I hear what you are saying for sure, but we have 4 outstanding athletes in this class at the LB class and at most, 3 of them can take the field at one time at the LB position and in all likelihood, only 2 at a time since we will be in the Nickel most of the time. If all the guys happen pan out there (very unlikely with attrition and transfers), somebody has to move and I doubt anyone from this group is going to the secondary. The more likely event would be for someone to play Viper (looking at Hubbard or Booker) and play with their hand in the dirt. We can worry about it later as the players develop, but suggesting Booker to be a DE down the road is far from outlandish.

I don't think it's outlandish, just a little premature. The kids aren't even on campus yet. And if/when Shazier leaves, IMO, there will be an open competition. We need to audition as many guys as possible to see who will be successful. Yes, only 3, and most likely only 2 LBs will see the field. But we need the best in run as well as pass coverage, and since grant and perry don't seem like those 2, it gives all of these top ranked youngsters a chance at seeing the field at their recruited position, and an obvious position of need. And the way that Dante played ths year, as well as in 7 on 7 camps(which usually greatly favor the offense) shows that he can make a contribution at LB. and Hubbard coverage and ball skills from playing S should help a lot also.

I agree they will all likely start out at LB and agreed to the extent that the priority is certainly on finding LBs. We know Berger and McMillan will for sure stay put, Hubbard and Booker could potentially slide down eventually. But really that is what I love about this LB class is the versatility. I LOVE the fact that Hubbard looks so great in coverage and will be a huge asset lining up over TEs and covering the perimeter. Booker is another long guy that could fill out at a solid 240 and stay at SAM, or get even bigger and play some DE. Lots of options but for now, let's hope they can play LB.
