LB Joe Burger (Official Thread)

Per the story, Grant spend most of the day on the sideline. If he was really passed by Burger for the 1st team MIKE spot, I would expect him to be running with the 2s at least? Without speculating directly there are a number of reasons he might not have been with the 1s at this particular practice.

Think he was insinuating more that they would both be surprise starters, not that they are both walk-on's.

Yup, exactly this.

I think Coach Meyer likes to throw the young pups into the fire to see how they react. I believe he mentioned it in his interview a couple of days ago. The media rarely gets to see a whole practice, so I'm just suggesting that everyone who was starting with the 1's in yesterdays practice, might not be running with the 1's in every practice. I just think it's a pretty big leap to say that Burger and Conley have leaped everyone in front of them with 1 or 2 days in full pads.

On a side note, I most defnitely hope Burger and Conley are both playing well, and apologize if it came off any other way.

Conley is well thought of. And Burger is a steal of a walk on player. Burger is a heady player, who is up to 240 lbs, now. A Zack Boren kind of player.

Burger is an absolute steal. He honestly could be starting for a number of lower tier big 10 teams and Mac teams. Hell be a very solid contributor to our defense and special teams. But the good thing is, he has the work ethic to possibly be all conference. He's a clear example of the star rating not always measures a players heart and willingness to work

I was mystified why Joe Burger was not getting many offers coming out of Cinci LaSalle. He looked every bit as good a player as Joe Bolden. In fact, I couldn't tell them apart when watching each play.

When Burger decided to be a preferred walk-on, he stated that he was going to become a starting LB. Could be Ohio State's big gain.

Everyone keep in mind, Joe had scholarship offers from Cincinnati, Miami (OH), Bowling Green, & Buffalo and turned them down to be a preferred walk-on at Ohio State. There were players on scholarship up north under Rich Rod that didn't have as good a list of scholarship offers as Joe had (:)). He's a smart (3.92 GPA in HS), talented kid and certainly not your average walk-on. Shows what you can do when you work hard enough at something. A true Buckeye and an inspiration.

Keep working hard Joe!!

I believe redshirting requires a schollie yes.....grayshirting is when you sit out as a student but you aren't on scholarship.
Redshirting does not require a scholarship. A student-athlete has five years of eligibility to play four years, regardless of his/her scholarship status.

Actually I'm pretty sure it's called grayshirting - doesn't matter either way....

Nope, that's not greyshirting. A grey shirt is when a early-enrolling player enrolls part-time (12 hours or less) his first semester, on his own dime, so he doesn't burn eligibility during that early semeseter...it simply postpones the start of a student?s NCAA scholarship eligibility...he is not own scholarship at that time.
