Look Who's Transferring Now (The Portal)

Bear Alexander denies he's portal-bound, says he will stay at USC

A day after it was widely reported that USC defensive tackle Bear Alexander planned to enter the transfer portal, he announced he will remain with the Trojans.

"I'm not crystal clear on all of the noise or what any of this portal mess is about," Alexander posted on social media. "I'm here to finish what I started and that's chasing a natty here at USC with my teammates."

.
On Tuesday, USC's coaching staff was made aware of Alexander's intent to transfer, sources told ESPN's Adam Rittenberg.

On3 first reported Alexander's expected jump into the portal.

Just sayin': Did somebody jump the gun on the rumor that Bear Alexander was transferring or did USC just up their NIL deal to keep him?

I think the latter

That was my guess too.

USC brought in new defensive coordinator D'Anton Lynn from UCLA in December and added several key transfers on defense during the winter period, including Oregon State's Easton Mascarenas-Arnold and Akili Arnold.

My first thought was that Bear found out what USC offered 2 new defensive transfers; and compared to what he got (and was getting) he figured the going rate for transfers at USC had went up accordingly and he was now "underpaid".

I’m trying to post portal recruits that are bigger names and/or realistic OSU targets. Martinez could be a good get to replace Hayden.

I'll guess he won't want to go to a school where he is just 1 of the 3 in the RB rotation. He'll want a school where he will be the #1 guy, period; and besides......
Michigan State Football and Jonathan Smith Has Inside Track On Transfer Portal's No. 2 RB Damien Martinez
After Michigan State hired head coach Jonathan Smith away from Oregon State, a migration of followers came with him from Corvallis to East Lansing.

It started with the coaching staff, as six of Smith's assistants come over from Oregon State. Then, three former Beaver players — quarterback Aidan Chiles, tight end Jack Velling and offensive lineman Tanner Miller — followed their coaches to the Midwest.

When the spring transfer portal window opens on April 16, a fourth former Beaver will be available, and he could be the most impactful transfer of the bunch if Michigan State is able to land him. On Tuesday, reports surfaced that Oregon State junior running back Damien Martinez intended to enter the portal this spring, and the first-team All-Pac-12 selection confirmed that intention on Wednesday.

A semifinalist for the Doak Walker Award in 2023, Martinez is one of the best tailbacks in the country. 247Sports lists the junior as the No. 2 running back in the transfer portal, behind only former Ole Miss RB Quinshon Judkins, who transferred to Ohio State.

Take any major player who is announcing intentions to enter portal with a huge grain of salt. Yes, it’s a negotiation tactic.

Welcome to 2024

A world where college football players leak stories to the press in order to get a raise

If I’m going to make an attempt to adjust I suppose I should start by not calling them “the press”
Valenti has had some rants lately about NIL and the transfer portal. Says it's killing his love for college athletics because it's like the wild west, there are no rules, no systems in place. He's all for kids getting their share, but it's hard to take it seriously when there's no structure. That's pretty much where I am. My passion for the sport has been sapped. I still follow tOSU and always will, but my investment in the sport as a whole is extremely low now.

College sports used to be great because you could become invested in the players and their development. Even if it was just superficial, there was some belief that they cared about the programs they were committed to. You could watch a kid grow from when they commit for 3-4 years. Now, they're basically just mercs. Signing on to play with the highest bidder and often jumping from program to program to program in search of the highest purse. I'm not naïve enough to believe there wasn't always some version of this going on, but at least a vast majority of kids stayed with a program for the duration of their career. It's basically a pro sport now, just without the binding contracts. At least in the pros, they sign a deal tying them to a team for a period of time. These kids are basically on perpetual one year deals. It's crap.

Not even one-year deals – just look at Julian Sayin, who spent one month with Alabama (11 days enrolled) before transferring to Ohio State.

A few years ago, colleges were fighting hard against unions. Pretty soon they'll be begging for them.

Going to be a very interesting week in ol portal. Getting a plug and play O-lineman but would be ideal but I don't know how realistic. I know I'm going to sound like an old man here but I totally agree with Klatt when he said that one portal window is fine but having 2 a year is ridiculous. I'm fine with the players having more agency but at some point there needs to be some consistency and structure in any organization. Also God forbid these legal adults have to make a decision and live with it for more than 6 months8D
