MAC Title: Buffalo 42, Ball State 24 (final)

Congrats to Buffalo on winning a conference championship.

The interview was telling, also. The emotion of Turner Gill, and as Spiels pointed out, the humility of him crediting the players with getting it done.

I noticed that too, but didn't want to continue to bang on the officiating. Did you see the play earlier in the game, where the Ball State returner called for a fair catch, let the ball hit the ground, fielded the ball, and had running room but the official whistled it dead because of the fair catch signal.

As far as I know, fielding a punt that has hit the ground, negates the fair catch signal. Spielman thought it was the wrong call too.

Spielman is wrong.

A valid or invalid fair catch signal deprives the receiving team of the opportunity to advance the ball, and the ball is declared dead at the spot of the catch or recovery or at the spot of the signal if the catch precedes the signal.

Did some of you guys bet your paychecks on Ball State? Lots of excuses for a team that committed 5 turnovers resulting in 28 points for their opponents.

Spielman is right. http://64.233.169.132/search?q=cach...+rule&hl=en&ct=clnk&cd=16&gl=us&client=safari

ARTICLE 3. a. During a down in which a kick is made, no player of Team B shall make any invalid fair catch signal during a free kick or beyond the neutral zone during a scrimmage kick. Any signal is invalid after a scrimmage kick is caught beyond the neutral zone, strikes the ground or touches another player beyond the neutral zone.A signal is invalid after a free kick is caught, strikes the ground or touches another player (A.R. 6-5-3-IV-VI).

The ball striking the ground, invalidates the fair catch.

As an FYI, there was a game a few years ago where a player called fair catch, the ball rolled to a stop, the players were exiting the field, and a player of the receiving team picked the ball up and returned it for a touchdown. It was an NFL game, but I'm assuming the same rule applies. The ball striking the ground invalidates the fair catch signal.

It's not that Jake. It's the frustration in one bad call, changing the entire complexion of the game. Does Ball State have 5 turnovers, if the officials get the initial touchdown call correct? Of course, Ball State could have recovered from the bad call to come back and win, but they went from an 11 point lead to a 3 point defecit. And all momentum went to Buffalo's favor.

By the way, Scott Van Pelt just called out the officals during Sportscenter. It was a terrible call.

OZ!!!

You freaking screwed up big time! You should of gave him the keys back in 1997 instead of the drunk down in Athens? Turner you might be coaching back at UNL when Pelini takes the OSU job in 2015?

Ball State got absolutely ROBBED, SCREWED, HOSED, whatever you want to say!

Those two calls- the touchdown that should have been and a catch that would have put Ball State in the red zone- were HORRIBLE calls that only idiots would make.

Buffalo was handed a tainted and undeserving title by stupid officials.

This may have been the worst officiating I have EVER seen in college football- even worse than that Oklahoma/Oregon game.

Ball State did not lose to Buffalo- they were robbed blind by horrible officiating.

Enjoy your tainted "title," Buffalo. I hope you lose by 6 touchdowns in whatever bowl game you end up in!

So Ball State turns the ball over 5 times and it's the refs fault that they lost?

Someone please a crown gently but firmly across Turner Gill's head

Buffalo when he got there probably couldn't beat Capital in football and now they're MAC champs. One of the greatest turn around stories in IA history
