On a couple different threads I've joked about the fine folks at mgoblo talking about Tressel changing the turf to a slippery turf that required a "magic shoe" for grip before The Game....

So... today, I came home for lunch and popped in the DVD of this year's Game, and something caught my eye.

See Teddy's shoes?

Yeah? So what... well... Here's a pic of Teddy in the Minnesota game (last game on the "non magic turf")

Seems like those conspiracy guys might be on to something :paranoid:

It's gotta be the shoes!

when i watched the game the next day, i immediately noticed that his shoes were different, at least in color. only now do i see that the spikes are in different shapes. the minnesota spikes appear almost cylindrical. the tsun spikes are more angular.

i think it's great that different spikes were possibly worn for the scum game. the scum program knew that the field was resodded. they knew it was resodded without enough time to grow in and without the best weather. unless i'm mistaken, wouldn't ohio state allow someone from the scum program look at the field earlier in the week? scum should have been prepared. if they weren't, then it's their own damn fault. however, it's not as though there are hundreds and hundreds of variations of spikes... and only one is the magical fit. listening to these whiners, you'd think that nike designed a shoe specific to that day's field conditions.

intelligent responses should be posted on scum boards. i just lurk, though. it's a bit like watching the monkeys toss their feces and then smell their hands to make sure that it really does stink.

as far as it being bs... it is and it isn't. again, i wouldn't be one bit surprised if some of our players had shoes that were different from previously worn shoes. the field was obviously different. watching the players in pregame warmups, when the field was as good as it was ever going to get, i saw scum receiver after receiver slip (and fall) while running small hooks off the sideline. the osu receivers weren't running the same hooks and, therefore, weren't making such severe cuts. it was hard to tell in pregame whether we had an advantage with the shoes. watching the replay of the game, i saw plenty of bucks slip, too.

the play, though, that was most affected (for either team) by the field conditions was datish's second fumbled snap. true, his cast might have affected it, but that fumble was certainly caused by a divot. the ball immediately went end-over-end like and was never in the air.

I think the different spikes angle you mention is actually a matter of camera angle.

See what I mean? Those look more like the Tsun spikes, don't you agree. If Sod-gate was anything, it was just another way to get in their heads.
