Marvel Cinematic Universe

I see a lot of people here feel Black Panther is the best or at least top 3 MCU movies. I do not, but I am interested in why others feel it is one of the best. I will admit that I have only seen it once so I may need to go back and watch again like I have my favorite ones.

For me it probably ranks 6th or so, but that's more because of how good the other ones are.

I liked BP because of how good Killmonger was. He was one of the best villains the Mcu had.

There's also no denying its cultural impact too.

Agreed all around. Loki, Thanos and KM are a cut above the rest.
He gets better as the movies go on. I like War Machine/Rhodey a lot
It's not as bad as IM2, but he never comes close to the chemistry that original Rhodey had with Stark. Happy picks up the slack well, but that's a very different partnership.

Everyone went to bed early tonight, so next in sequence was Iron Man 2. Anyone hoping for an Empire to the first ones Star Wars was certainly disappointed, but it wasn’t terrible. I agree with people previously that Cheadle was horrendous, which is weird because I like him. Hammer just kind of struck me like Ross did in IH, one dimensional and boring. At no time did he seem like a serious threat, there was no credibility in that role at all. I also thought the story was shallower and the stuff between Stark and Potts went from interesting sexual tension in I to annoying as fuck in II. The one place I actually didn’t hate was Rourke actually, he didn’t exactly have Joker material to work with, but he didn’t mail it in either. I at least got the sense he was trying, unlike Cheadle. I’m not the biggest SJ fan, but there’s no denying she looks good in a sun dress or in a tight black suit. All in all, I give it about the same average rating as IH for different reasons, maybe rating IH slightly higher because they used Abomination better and I like Liv Tyler better than Gwenyth in this one.

1. Black Panther 5/5
2. Iron Man 4.5/5
3. Incredible Hulk 3/5
4. Iron Man II 2.5/5

So next in line was Thor. This was an interesting movie because some things worked, and some really didn’t. The cast was off the chain in most cases, although I still don’t know why the keep casting Natalie Portman in roles like this. She’s not hot enough to be 1-D eye candy, and the material isn’t deep enough for any real acting from her. Maybe it’s just me, but it just didn’t work. What did work was mostly everyone else. Hopkins and Russo were just meh for me, kind of there for their name more than any impact. But of course talking depth, Loki is perhaps MCUs Joker, in that he can take it in all different directions and has more to work with than probably anyone else. So I look forward to seeing much more of that. I liked the Frost Giants, I wanted more of them and less of the hokey earth scenes, which I think lasted too long, though I like Skarsgård of course. The agent guy is pretty bland thus far. Good humor in spots. I hope Nick Fury gets better because right now SLJ is kind of annoying me. Overall though, given this is material where disbelief suspense is maximal with all the “realms”, it was a good time for the most part.

1. Black Panther 5/5
2. Iron Man 4.5/5
3. Thor 3.5/5
4. Incredible Hulk 3/5

I think thor is the one movie that gets a lot of hate (a lot deserved), but I just really enjoy it for some reason.

Whoever thought it was a good idea to dye Hemsworths eyesbrows needs to be fired

I liked this review .

Phase I: Complete.
First up was Captain America: The First Avenger. I have to say I really, really liked this one. I think the story worked, the background worked, the acting worked…and the girl, good God almighty, I don’t know if it was the role or the hot red lipstick or what, but Goddamned, I was like in palpitations all movie. This movie, more than the other ones even, seemed to set things up more and better for future things than the other iterations did…maybe that’s because of the time difference. Red Skull was…just OK for me, maybe not quite evil enough (I think of Himmler in a red mask), and his army looked fantastic but didn’t really do much. TLJ is always a treat and Stanley Tucci had a bit of a surprise role for me. As a scientist Arnim Zola is one of the characters that fascinates me, and I’m sure I’ll see a lot more from him. I really don’t have a whole lot of bad to say about it, the Tesseract is somewhat confusing to me, but that’s because I don’t comic. I will hopefully figure out more about it in…the next movie. I am probably in the significant minority here, but I put this one ever so slightly ahead of Iron Man, just because I had more “fun” watching it in addition to being entertained and following along the story.

And of course, that led to the Avengers. Obviously having watched the first 5, I knew who the players were going to be and what they would likely bring to the table. I went in unsure of how the whole Thor other realm thing was going to jive with, say, an Iron Man, and whether they would be able to do anything adequate on the villain side to really make this a culmination. What I got was, and I am not easily impressed if you’ve read many of my other reviews, a Goddamned masterpiece. It wasn’t a masterpiece because of the story, though it was good, it wasn’t a masterpiece because of the battle at the end, though of course it was both epic and necessary. It was a masterpiece because of the subtle (and not so subtle) interactions between the characters. Anyone thinking they would gloss over tension, mistrust, contrasting styles, dark humor, and general testosterone in favor of a CGI-fest must have been very pleasantly surprised. It was actually a lot less IM-centric than I thought it would be too…they all seemed to get adequate screen time and contribute without dominating the proceedings (even Hulk). And of course using Loki as the bad boy…brilliant! (clink). His acting nuances were fabulous, and he is the perfect foil for this group because he uses misdirection instead of technology or brute strength. I’m still confused AF about the whole Tesseract thing, but I imagine I have 13 more movies to figure it out. This movie is EXACTLY how you do comic books, in contrast to Scott Gimple’s epic dumbfuckery while ruining the Savior storyline in TWD, which will go down as one of TV’s all-time wasted opportunities. The cultural and historical significance of Black Panther cannot be minimized, and I still think it was an epic movie with a fabulous villain, but…because of the interactions between the characters and the top notch acting all the way around, this one gets the nod at #1 thus far from me.

1. Marvel’s Avengers 5/5
2. Black Panther 5/5
3. Captain America: The First Avenger 4.5/5
4. Iron Man 4.5/5
5. Thor 3.5/5
6. Incredible Hulk 3/5
7. Iron Man II 2.5/5

I was about to post saying I was getting antsy waiting for your next review!

You hit the nail on the head with avengers. And the main reason why the DC universe is failing. It's like they started with civil war (you'll get into that later )and then did avengers, then the solo movies. We don't care about the characters yet. But with mcu even by avengers, we know enough about all the characters even the minor ones like Hawkeye,, to care about them and understand their interactions

For phase 2.. Please just skip thor dark world, it's so bad

Best thing about Avengers is that it's infinitely rewatchable, like Shawshank or Road House -- if I'm flipping channels and Avengers is on TBS or FX, I stop and watch whatever is left. Character interactions and dialogue are so good. It is everything the DCU doesn't get. Winter Soldier, GotG 1, and Civil War have the same rewatchability.

I'm not exaggerating when I say I've watched Ragnarok roughly 40 times. It's high on the rewatchable scale

Ragnarok really is incredible. Hilarious, amazing action sequences, great pacing, it has it all really. Crazy how far the Thor franchise has come after two okay but not spectacular movies, and I still enjoyed the first two a decent bit. Only wish they would have brought back Kat Dennings because she was A) hilarious and B) gorgeous. Her personality would've fit in perfectly with the rest of Ragnarok. It, Black Panther, and Infinity War are my interchangeable Top 3 for Marvel movies.
