Matt Barnes (DC Memphis Tigers)

Congrats on the gig Coach. I don't think any true OSU fans will forget how crucial he was to this season. If Barnes doesn't take over, we may have had at least 2 more losses to the season. I think he can do some big things at Memphis, and I look forward to following his career.

I wonder how this all went down. Was he encouraged to take the job?

I’m guessing so. I’d think if he was seen as somebody that they really wanted to keep around they could have with a raise and maybe a “co-DC” title.

If Coombs is willing to take a pay cut and be the secondary coach, Barnes was odd man out.

You wouldn't have gotten Knowles as a co-DC. After giving Knowles $1.9M, giving Barnes a raise from $600K to be the safety coach probably wouldn't be in the cards.

Barnes made $600K in 2021 as the secondary coach. In 2021 Memphis assistant football coaches made a lot less, their DC made $420K. Barnes probably accepted a pay cut to go to Memphis; but it is a career upgrade as he will be the DC.

Great opportunity to become the DC. Best of luck to him.

Off thread topic, but do you think LJ Sr. has lost some juice or have they just missed on recruits? JT and Sawyer hopefully fix that.
I think it’s impossible for assistant coaches and players, regardless of how talented, to shine when the coordinator in charge of everything isn’t very good.

The coaches don’t have clear concepts to teach in the first place and the players aren’t put in a position to be aggressive, attack, and actually take advantage of their talent advantage, and it’s even worse after a competent offensive coordinator has made adjustments mid game.

Where are these reviews coming from? Is he just offering this up out of nowhere or are these somehow connected to the program?

Either way, Williamson’s parents were right. He would be well served, for his future, to put a sock in it. Burning bridges and doing so in such a public forum is not something that future employers look kindly upon.
