Matt Terwilliger (official thread)

reduced time, increases pressure to preform during short stretches. you see this with every bench player. honestly folks you are talking about the 8/9th man. most teams only can go 7 deep and be competitive. i dont know what you expect? he has yet to give up a run since oden has been back when hes been in the game. hes played stretchs of EIGHT OR MORE MINUTES three out of the last four games. i dont think some of you realize how long 8 mins of competitive basketball is. watch oden forawhile how long is he in? guys dont play in the low block for 8 mins at a time at this level. well very few do. you need to give credit where credit is do.

does he rush himself yes, is this excitement/nervousness from a reduced role. from a role player. yes. is that normal yes.

does he dominate the defensive end of the court. no. does he get beat, yes. is he physicall limtied with his size and build. yes. is he quick and a good shotblocker, well he thinks so. thats the main issue. keeping his feet on the ground. if he plays high teen minutes he can give up two fouls. fine with me.

i think some people need to really check their expectations....

JO, there's nothing wrong with having extremely high expectations, especially for the "#2" team in the country. I expect Matta to either recruit blue chippers or develop kids into blue-chippers in a very short amount of time. Of course Matta didn't recruit Twig and probably wouldn't have.

Also, Twig has averaged 7 minutes a game for the past 15 games which definitely shows how much of a liability the coaching staff knows he is. If Greg isn't in foul trouble or terribly winded, Matt is going to be participating as an observer.

i thought you didnt like bk's numbers :wink2:

well have to agree to disagree. you expect matta to have his teams make up first, second and all the honorable mentions for all american. i expect a team with roles.

matt plays a role, and though he may not be the best player, he might not be the fundamentally sound, hes prefromed his role in playing very loooong stretches of minutes to deadlocks in big ten play. ill take that out of my 9th guy...

He could just play smarter out there....thats all I would ask, but I think that is also an inate abaility. 2 instances come to mind....He tipped a ball directly to an opposing player against Purdue, instead of grabbing the rebound. He obviosuly felt pressure from somewhere when it wasn't there and looked pretty silly for just batting the ball. Also, against UNC he blatantly hacks Lawson under the hoop when he just as easily could of stood straight up or gone for the block. I thought that looked really silly as well, you don't often see 6'9 guys intentionally fouling 6'0 guards at the hoop. I know just two plays, but I think it somewhat exemplifies the way he plays. He also takes some forced shots, and forces moves to the hoop. I agree however, that he's just a role player and it could be a LOT worse. For the 8th-9th guy I think we're lucky to have him, I just wish he'd play a little smarter and know his role a little better.

No problem JO, we can agree to disagree on this one. Thanks for thinking with a clear head :)

I agree with you to a point......I guess I would like to see the same progression I saw last year when he played quality minutes and performed well....the biggest issue I have with his play is his inability to hold his own on the boards.

a lot of peoples favorite whipping boy. still leads the team in plus/minus.

played very well down the stretch and in coachs speak not only stole minutes. but, provided valued time...
Agreed he played some big minutes tonight. He got some huge rebounds and other than Ron Lewis was the only one on the team to knock down free throws. Great Job Matt keep up the good work.

oden was 5/6. though conley's free throw percentage wasn't stellar, he produced a lot of offense by forcing the vols into poor positions. what is a riot, though, is watching twiggy shoot free throws. he looks bored. his face is featureless, and he even rolled his eyes before one free throw. for another free throw, his back was nearly turned completely to the basket by the time it went in.

I saw this too. I thought he looked like he was standing around maybe watching smaller kids or grass grow. my thought was that he looked like he had ice water in his veins :tongue2:

My new favorite Buckeye. The guy helped out a ton last night. With Oden out with 4 fouls, Hunter out with 4 fouls, and I think it was Harris who was out with an injury, Terwilliger was sometimes the only "big man" for Ohio State. And he'd get rebounds between 2-3 Tennessee players, get the ball back out to the Ohio State shooters, make free throws, etc. Speaking of which...

Exactly what I was thinking. He was at the line with a chance to tie, or maybe even take the lead, and he seemed to be out there without a care in the world. It doesn't seem to bother him that this may be the last game of the season.

I haven't watched a lot of games this year. Maybe 5 games before the Big Ten tournament. But when I see Terwilliger playing, I feel that he's not going to hold anything back to help his team anyway that he can.
