Matt Terwilliger (official thread)

i know what you are saying. but hes not a guy who will "dominate" hes proven he can "steal" minutes. that is his role. yesterday he played over 8 mins in the second half to a minus 3 during that span with oden on the bench. that is his role to take minutes and when oden gets foul trouble to not allow bleeding so the team can buckle down and set the team up to play the last 8 minutes like they played them yesterday...

Yeah, I know. I've sat through many tough years when I would have been glad if we had Twigs as our starting center, but now I'm spoiled with a slew of good players coming off the bench. When your four guys coming off the bench, factoring in experience, are Cook, Hunter, and Lighty, and Twigs, well you know the odd man out. Lighty may not be an offensive threat yet, but is equally as good as Twigs with much better defense.

ding ding. thats it you bring 3 guys who have dynamic games, and one who for all intent and purpose is very bland. matt doesnt really do anything great, maybe his set shot. but hes proven more than capable of stealing minutes. and providing the ability to hold teams off from going on a run while the "big boys" are on the bench. thats all you can really ask.

that being said like you said they had all the captains there sat and a couple of them i groaned to myself, a few of those guys were the best or one of the better players on thier team and they left a lot to be desired...

I think Twig has done everything that has been asked of him this year, and I think that he is going to have to be ready to play come tourney time as Oden will get in foul trouble at some point...

Basically guys, they way I feel is that no one, and I mean no one has any excuse to play bad defense. If you do play bad defense, you better have a stellar offensive game to make up for it, ie Cook in many cases. Twigs gets manhandled on the interior by a good center and picks up foul after foul. Against poor centers, he'll trade a block for a foul. If we are going to rely on him for minutes in the tournament, he's going to learn how to:
A. Get tougher
B. Learn how to play D in the paint without giving up fouls

What you have with Twig is your classic example of a role player, he doesnt do anything great, but he will go in there and give it all he has, he might cost you a bucket or two on the defensive end, but he is going to go hard after the rebound, try and get the block and be a physical presence...

Just b/c you arent great on offense or great on offense doesnt mean you can't be a role player, get a couple of garbage points and steal some minutes when Oden gets into foul trouble...

You mean defense right?

Unfortunately, I don't see the center position as one that your backup can be a role player, maybe your three deep. He does give it his all, and I'm not questioning his effort. I just think his poor defense might cost us the crown that one game Greg gets into foul trouble and we really need him to make some stops.

Oh, and thanks to you and jo for debating with some sense. I'm getting fired up tonight

Yeah I mean defense...

Well look at the UNC game he played the whole game and did well against Hansbrough, it was more Wright that lit us up, b/c we didnt have anyone to stop him...

Twig has his moments, where he really struggles, but he also has his moments where he shows flashes...

I don't think he plays enough to really cost us, and if Oden does get into foul trouble and Matta doesnt feel he can handle the duties we could always go with a lineup of Hunter and Twig or Hunter Harris and go to a zone to offset his man D...

No problem, that is what is so great about this board...

golfer you arent going to get an argument out me that matt is all b10. that being said hes a viable option, many teams dont have that as a second option.

painter has done a great job iwth landry, wow has he improved. that being said hes a very physical player who played extra physical sat. though i do agree twig plays a lot better when he plays "with in himself" he got out of that for a stretch or two saturday. though i dont think hes been used to going for an 8 minute stretch. i just have a hard time getting on the 8th guy who has three times in the past two weeks played stretches of over 8 straight and during those stretches was no worse than a minus 3...

It's alright, we disagree, but you guys do make sense. Maybe I'm blowing off steam from the Duke thread. I just see him as basically a Radinivic, who fills up minutes simply because we don't have someone else who is tall enough to do so.

That's his role. What's wrong with that? There are definitely better players in the country than Matt Terwilliger, but when he's called upon I think he does a pretty good job.

I don't see a role being "Play 5 minutes and try not to give up 2 fouls or 5 points". That's just me. That's also why I'm not a college basketball coach :)
