Minnesota Golden Gophers (official thread)

Report: Minnesota players threaten boycott of bowl game

I think they should survey every players parents and ask if they are prepared to pay for the remainder of their son's education if Minnesota pulls their scholarship because their son boycotted scheduled football activities. Remember getting a scholarship and playing football at Minnesota (like any other school) is a privilege not a right.

If they do end up replacing MN with another team in the bowl, what's the $$ hit the university takes? One article gives the Power5's $50 million each for bowls, so whatever their share of that would be. What should the penalty be if you cause your university to lose that kind of money?

We damn Baylor and PedState for not taking sexual abuse seriously enough, and now the Gopher team wants to punish their school for taking it too seriously.

Now the big question is, how does admin handle this?

Asked if the players were worried about losing their scholarships, Wolitarsky responded: “We’re all in this together. What are they going to do, pull 120 guys off the team? They won’t have a team if that’s the case.”

Well, cupcake, that is one option. I can't see a way to resolve this, assuming the players stand firm, other than doing that. Otherwise, who the hell is actually running the university? The players shoved chips worth tons of bowl money onto the table, and if the supposed adults in charge don't respond in kind (i.e., free education) seems to me they've forfeited control of their school. Just box up their knick knacks and turn over their offices to the team.

Yep. Minny needs to stand firm and dismiss the whole fucking team if the players go through with this. I'd say the same thing if our players ever pulled this kind of crap. Scorch the earth and salt the practice fields.

I don't think that it's necessary to go nearly that far, at least not yet. Simply telling them that if they boycott Minnesota will simply pull out of the bowl game seems sufficient: No trip, swag bags, or inflated travel expenses for the players and they can enjoy that Minnesota weather. Plus the young guys and nonstarters lose the chance to develop and get a jump on incoming recruits for next season via extra bowl practices. Besides revoking scholarships and what not being bad for the players and the school (what's it do for their APR? Does the foosball subsidize the rest of their student-athletes?), it's essentially a death knell for the program as the NCAA isn't going to let them bring in 85 new recruits in one season and who'd want to play for a school that's that vindictive to its players anyway?

Finally, as far as I know this isn't yet a clear cut case of a crime even being committed (authorities declined to prosecute) or of institutional cover up or other malfeasance. Title IX compliance types can also be pretty damn politically-oriented/SJW on top of the appropriate moral imperative to be aggressive in enforcement and the additional optics pressure for such aggressiveness in light of Baylor/PSU . . . The "boycott" could be players seeking to preserve a perceived "entitlement" to whatever women they want a la Baylor, more of a feeling that their teammates are getting railroaded as what Jerry Tarkanian would call the Cleveland State to Baylor's Kentucky. or some combination of the two.

As more information comes out, I remain open to the possibility of more drastic measures being appropriate.

I haven't read anything on this but I did see an article that mentioned the police said it was consensual. If so it seems like another liberal school going off the walls on this kind of stuff. The players are absolutely right on this, if the police declined prosecution and said it was consensual

A consensual gang bang after drinking multiple shots that some of the players filmed? She probably consented to the first guy and had the rest forced on her.

Probably, at least using a definition of forced that includes didn't get clear permission as well as went ahead over observable protestation, although the latter certainly could have occurred as well and I'm not sure if there's much legal difference, but law enforcement has more info. than us and didn't think that they could make a case. None of this is to defend the suspended players by the way and I'm well aware that standards for university discipline are far less than for criminal prosecution. I've got zero issue, based on what I know now, with the suspensions, but we're not talking about the suspended players here but rather their teammates, They may or may not know more than us about the situation. Suppose the suspended guys are telling them that it didn't go down they way that the victim says it did and they're getting railroaded by the SJWs in the Title IX office? Supposedly one suspended dude wasn't even there (maybe he watched the recording on his phone?). Depending on what the protesting players know or think they know, protesting for their "brothers in arms" might be pretty reasonable. At any rate, I don't know enough to go scorched earth on the protesting players/entire athletic department yet.

A crisis of confidence with these bowl predictions

31. National Funding Holiday Bowl: Minnesota vs. Washington State (Dec. 27, 7 p.m. ET, ESPN/ESPN App)

(Qualcomm Stadium, San Diego)

The Gophers were underdogs to begin with, and now they'll be missing 10 players who are suspended. Cougars coach Mike Leach does look a little bit like Carl Spackler.

Prediction: Washington State 41, Minnesota 21

Entire article: http://www.espn.com/college-footbal...t-college-football-playoff-semifinal-matchups

I'm thinking with all the suspensions/strike distractions, there is no way the Gophers will beat the Cougars.
