MLB General Discussion (Official Thread)

You would think the Orioles of the early 80's would be up there due to Murray and Ripken but the 2b and 3b were pretty horrible.

here's my take on the 2 best for my money:

Perez, Morgan, Concepcion, Rose vs Gehrig, Lazzeri, Koenig and Dugan.

1b-Edge NY
2b-Wash to very slight Edge Cincy
SS-Edge Cincy
3b-Edge Cincy

However, you gotta give a lot more respect to the Yankee infield with Gehrig. I think too many people today only think of him for his speech and the disease and forget just how astounding his career numbers truely are. This guy at 1B along with 3 of us rounding it out should get all-time consideration from his presence alone.

Lifetime BA of .340..2721 Hits..493 HR's..1995 RBI and a career line of .442/.632/1.074  and of course there was the little matter of a streak he had.

Cant go wrong with either one, but I'll take the BRM's infield if my life depended on it.

Dryden: "Todd Zeile on the bench as a 3B substitution was a nice option to have."

Actually Zeile was a late season acquisition. They acquired Zeile & Pete Incavigila (sp?) right before the waiver trade deadline and played him at 3B every day and moved Surhoff to every day LF. Palmeiro-Ripken-Alomar-Surhoff barely played over 100 games together as infielders.

"yeah, FUCK YOU Jeffrey Maier!!!"

Dude, I'm sick of hearing Oriole fans bitch about Maier .. the Yankees OWNED the O's that year, and had a much better team anyway. The Yanks were UNDEFEATED at Camden Yards that season (and also undefeated at Jacobs Field & Fulton County Stadium that year, too - including playoffs), and the Maier incident happend in Game 1! Its not a pivotal moment in a playoff series at all. Jeez .. if the O's were so damn good, then rebound after a close Game 1 loss and take the series like every other great team does. How hard is it to come back from a 0-1 deficit in a best of 7? The only thing Maier did is make that Series a 5 game whitewash instead of a 6 game whitewash.

Jaxbuck: "However, you gotta give a lot more respect to the Yankee infield with Gehrig. I think too many people today only think of him for his speech and the disease and forget just how astounding his career numbers truely are."

You obviously haven't read my thread in this forum about the 25 greatest players of all time. Gehrig is the 3rd best player of all-time, statistically. Go check it out. It gives the Iron Horse all the props in the world.

And, I can't argue against the Big Red Machine. But I'm just gonna throw this out there, and you guys can chew on this. This is last year and this year's (projected) numbers for the Texas Infield:

2004:
Texeira, 1B - 101 R, 34 2B, 38 HR, 112 RBI, & .281 AVG.
Soriano, 2B - 32 2B, 28 HR, 91 RBI, & .280 AVG.
Young, SS - 114 R, 216 H, 33 2B, 9 3B, 22 HR, 99 RBI, & .313 AVG.
Blalock, 3B - 107 R, 172 H, 38 2B, 32 HR, 110 RBI, & .276 AVG.

2005 (Projected):
Texeira, 1B - 126 R, 192 H, 40 2B, 47 HR, 138 RBI, & .290 AVG.
Soriano, 2B - 113 R, 175 H, 45 2B, 40 HR, 105 RBI, & .275 AVG.
Young, SS - 124 R, 224 H, 34 2B, 9 3B, 26 HR, 89 RBI, & .333 AVG.
Blalock, 3B - 188 H, 38 2B, 30 HR, 107 RBI, & .285 AVG.

That's some major lumber being thrown out there ...

There is a scenario where 4 outs are officially go into the scorebook...

Bottom 10th - 0-0 game. Men on 2nd and 3rd - one out. Batter hits the ball into the gap, both runners believe it's a hit and each runner scores (2 runs). Right fielder makes diving catch (2nd out). Gets up and throws to third doubling off third base runner (3rd out). That run no longer counts and inning is over. Unfortunately, the only way to take the other run off the board from the guy who scored from second, is to throw to second and double (actually triple) him off as well. This makes a fourth out that the official scorer must score as an out in order to eliminate the run.

There is no choice for the offense as to which third out they want because they must make both outs official to remove the runs from the board!

NEW YORK (AP) -- Less than 24 hours after helping the Chicago White Sox win their first World Series since 1917, AL championship series MVP Paul Konerko was among 62 players who filed for free agency Thursday.

Konerko, who hit .283 with 40 homers and 100 RBIs during the regular season, is one of the top hitters available on the market. Approximately 200 players are eligible to file by the Nov. 10 deadline, and free agents can start discussing contract terms with all teams the following day.

Philadelphia Phillies closer Billy Wagner and Los Angeles Angels catcher Bengie Molina also filed, as did Boston first baseman Kevin Millar and third baseman Bill Mueller. They were joined by Florida pitcher A.J. Burnett and Chicago Cubs outfielder Jeromy Burnitz.

San Francisco moved to keep two players from becoming eligible, exercising right-hander Jason Schmidt's $10 million option and outfielder Randy Winn's $5 million option.

In addition, the Giants announced that three 2006 options had been exercised in which the decisions were up to players: second baseman Ray Durham ($7 million), outfielder Moises Alou ($4 million) and right-handed reliever LaTroy Hawkins ($3.5 million).

The New York Mets declined Danny Graves' $5 million option and elected to pay the reliever a $500,000 buyout.

Colorado agreed to a one-year contract with pitcher Mike DeJean, a deal that includes a mutual option for 2007. After giving general manager Jim Bowden a six-month contract extension, the Washington Nationals agreed to one-year contracts with infielder Damian Jackson, who elected for free agency and left the San Diego Padres on Oct. 14, and Bernie Castro, who left the Baltimore Orioles.

The Indians are getting an early start....

Tribe signs Vazquez to 1-year pact

CLEVELAND - The Indians avoided arbitration with infielder Ramon Vazquez on Friday, signing him to a one-year contract for 2006.

The Indians traded infielder Alex Cora to Boston on July 7 for Vazquez, who hit .250 in 12 games. The 29-year-old has a career .258 average for Seattle, San Diego, Boston and Cleveland.

The move leaves the Indians with three arbitration-eligible players — outfielder Coco Crisp, pitcher David Riske and first baseman Ben Broussard. Crisp is not eligible for free agency.

Four Indians have filed for free agency — pitchers Kevin Millwood, Bob Wickman, Bobby Howry and Scott Elarton, outfielder Juan Gonzalez and utilityman Jose Hernandez. Pitcher Scott Sauerbeck also is eligible for free agency. The team is expected to exercise its 2006 contract option on second baseman Ronnie Belliard within the next two weeks.

CHICAGO (AP) -- Paul Konerko decided to stay with the World Series champion Chicago White Sox, agreeing Wednesday to a $60 million, five-year contract.
The first baseman led the White Sox with 40 homers and 100 RBIs last season, hitting .283. He was MVP of the AL championship series win over the Los Angeles Angels after hitting two homers and seven RBIs. He had a go-ahead grand slam in Game 2 of the World Series sweep over Houston, the first Series title for the White Sox since 1917.
A two-time All-Star, Konerko had an $8.75 million base salary last season, then became a free agent after the Series. Last offseason, Chicago decided not to discuss an extension. His new deal calls for him to receive $12 million annually. Chicago agreed to a limited no-trade clause that states he can't be dealt to six specified teams without his permission. Konerko also was courted by the Angels and the Baltimore Orioles.
