Yankees bid farewell to A-Rod after likely MVP opts out

DENVER -- Alex Rodriguez opted out of his $252 million, 10-year contract with the Yankees on Sunday in what appears to be the end of his tumultuous career with New York.
Rodriguez's decision, announced by agent Scott Boras as the rival Boston Red Sox completed their World Series sweep of Colorado and later confirmed by Hank Steinbrenner, makes the third baseman eligible to become a free agent.
Boras said he attempted to notify Yankees general manager Brian Cashman of the decision but couldn't reach him, so he left a voice mail.
"He was traveling and I was traveling," Boras said.

A-Rod putting himself above the game

Alex Rodriguez couldn't be at the World Series to receive an award from Hank Aaron -- a family commitment was the stated reason -- but he managed to upstage Game 4, with the help of agent Scott Boras, who announced in the early innings that his client is opting out of his contract.
The way this played out could not have been more apropos, because A-Rod needs to be bigger than the game; he needs to be more important than the Red Sox or the Rockies or any other team, or any other player. He is one of the greatest players in history at compiling statistics, the greatest ever at compiling wealth, and his next employer will have to buy into that. The World Series can't matter as much as A-Rod.

Maybe that will work for the Angels, or the Giants, or the Dodgers, or the Red Sox. It is not going to be the case for the Yankees, who were prepared to pay Rodriguez the highest salary in history and couldn't even get him to the negotiating table, after his four tumultuous seasons with the team.

I'd rather go somewhere where I'm not going to be booed and killed in the media on a regular basis, too. ARod is young enough to do well at his next stop and establish his identity with that team.
Agree. I wouldn't want to put up MLB MVP numbers and still get booed like he does. Plus, Torre is gone now.

A-Rod to the Marlins?

Although it's a long shot, don't dismiss him entirely.
Five days after Alex Rodriguez opted out of his contract with the New York Yankees, the top front-office executive for the Marlins did not discount the idea of the Miami native trolling Dolphin Stadium in Florida's uniform next summer.

A-Rod talks with Yankees

In a startling turn of events, Alex Rodriguez spoke with the Steinbrenner family and New York Yankees officials and told them he wants to stay in pinstripes.
"The past is the past. I don't know what brought about him approaching us," Yankees senior vice president Hank Steinbrenner said. "I guess you could say things didn't go the way before that he intended on and weren't handled properly or whatever."
Rodriguez opted out of his contract in October and became a free agent. Before Rodriguez terminated his record 10-year, $252 million contract on Oct. 28, agent Scott Boras told the Yankees they would have to make a $350 million offer to get a meeting with the third baseman.

Possibly, but the other factor is NO team is going to pay Pay-rod his asking price. The only potential suitor is really the Yankees. Boston could, but wont. I suppose the Mets could... Angels? Not with Vlady. Cubs.... maybe... Yankees won't pay 350, but I just don't see where PayRod thinks he's gonna get that kind of jack.

Damn, I'm smart.
