What am I doing wrong? The only glitch that I've been able to find so far is this that I suck.

Check this out: I'm the linebacker and I call a blitz play. So I blitz in and run right by the quarterback. He takes a step to his right, bombs it downfield to a wide open receiver (the cornerback is 10 yards behind him), who catches it for a touchdown. If I could only make the tackle, I might be able to stop them.

(I'm playing with a created team using the "Academic" players. The only way I can EVER stop them is because I created a kick-ass linebacker. Unfortunately, I'm not very good at controlling him.)

I've since gotten over 4000 a couple times, but it's not as easy as the first time I tried it, and the dude's abilities haven't increased. What's the point of it?

Overall, a good game. The guy's #1 in Heisman ranking with Northwestern and Michigan to go. Ginn's #2 and Hawk's #3. I just have to pick one of the covers you guys have made and I'll be all set.
1) The point of scholarship offers is that you can see who wants you....but you aren't limited to those teams. Most people who play this game aren't hardcore fans who would go to one of the three schools that offer, so EA didn't want to restrict them to only 3 teams. If you make an awesome player but want to play for your favorite team who sucks(say your favorite team is penn state), the walkon feature lets you put a good player on a bad team.

If they didn't have this lots of people would hate this feature.

2) The practice in the dorm room lets you get better at running the plays, not your player. Your player will progress based on his stats during the season.

I guess that makes sense. But it still seems kinda dumb. "See who wants you." Does anyone really care? I think what they should have done to make it better is give all the teams a chance to give you an offer. You might get 119 offers, or maybe 1. And if you walk-on somewhere, you're automatically way down in the depth chart.

Which brings me to another way I would make this feature better. I think that you should be just the one player, and only control him. And you don't get the chance to call the plays (except the quarterback, he can call audibles). Thats the way the game should be.

As soon as I won the Heisman (2nd season with my QB), I quit the game. I didn't even play the NC bowl game. I've gone on to play dynasty - still the best feature, IMO.

I'm thinking this was thrown into 2006 as a test engine for the next gen games, where they can be more in depth on stuff like that. If they didn't offer at all then people would complain about it not being realistic....If every school offered then some players would just automatically go to the USCs of the world despite what that program needs.

If I were doing it I would have 5 offers that are based on preferences that you enter before you do the drill. It wouldn't be hard to plug those preferences into their recruiting engine. Say you do a 1-5 star rating on how important location, school prestige, coach prestige, playing time, academics,.....Then based on that and performance, they give you some offers. If you don't get the offers you wanted, tough luck.

I don't think this would jive with the majority of the people who play this game. Would you call your own plays but just watch if it was a pass play (say you were a RB)? Would the computer call the plays? That would piss people off who didn't want to run that play (although it would be realistic since the player doesn't have much say in what play is run). EA has to some how make a game that realistic players want AND cheesers want.

Again, if I were making this part of the game, I would make it so practices were like practice mode, and your performance would determine how featured you were in the offense....then the computer calls the plays, and you only control your guy. I wouldn't make practices give you any more or less attributes....because people would just practice 100 times before the first game and be a 99.

Speaking of rosters. . . Has anyone downloaded any of the rosters for PS2 (such as at www.gamerosters.com)? Any notes on the rosters available, what to download, what still needs changed, etc? I would prefer not to adjust playing attributes, personally (or else I would feel the need to do it for every team - so even if OSU is down where it shouldn't be, I don't want to have the only team that is artificially up. . .

Kinch, try Blacklover's rosters from MaddenMania.com. I downloaded those for my brother's PS2 and he likes those just fine. Plus that guy will continue to release updates throughout the season with created players and other adjustments. You should also be able to find other rosters at operationsports.com.

My biggest issue with the game so far (other than my team's 1-5 record) is the incessant celebrations. In my opinion, it takes away from the "college feel" of the game when guys are celebrating wildly after every play, with no flags thrown. I'd rather have it like last year, where you could make them celebrate if you wanted, but you'd likely get a flag.

The more I play this game, the more I can't stand how easy it is to juke. Erik Haw caught the pitch, juked out two guys waiting for him wide, sidestepped another, and juked out a fourth.

How many times has a small speedy back like Maroney or Hart juked or sidestepped like 5-7 guys (including multiple times where there are tons of guys closing in on him).

And all of this is happening on Heisman. I like the changes they made, but at times its way too arcade-ish.

I know my ideas wouldn't jive with everyone. And it would be stupid for EA to limit their target customers. But they already have Dynasty mode for people who want to control everything (coaching, players, recruiting, etc.). Race for the Heisman is very close to the same. The player you created starts in place of whatever other guy SHOULD be there, regardless of overall skill ratings, and you play the games the same way. You don't get to change depth charts or change formation personnel unless you're actually IN the game, which isn't a big deal. You're basically playing dynasty, without the recruiting, and you have some "legend" who you created.

I'm with you, BN, in that the Race for the Heisman probably wouldn't have many fans if it were the way I'd change it. And I wouldn't be one of the fans. I like dynasty mode too much. But changing dynasty mode only slightly and calling it a brand new mode, in my opinion, isn't showing enough creativity.

That's a good idea. Maybe practice mode can help you move up the depth chart (if I made the game, you'd start low on the depth chart), and change the coach's playcalling to include your dude more.

And BFS, I think you're just too good. Either that, or I just can't get the juking down right. Am I sprinting too much? (I sprint basically ALL the time.)

Yes, you're sprinting too much. Wait for blocks to set up ahead of you, and use the players agility to your advantage. Speed is only useful in the open field, or trying to get through a wide open hole. It's much more about patience, just like the real thing.

So I got it last night and played my first game (after some warmup quarters against scUM) against IronBuckI.

He won 37-3 (or thereabouts). It was a lot closer than the score though. :) And let me tell you, my field goals was thing of beauty! :P

I know this is an old thread, but I figured I ought not start a new one.

Anyway, I'm playing the Race for Heisman mode again, and thought I'd share the humorous goal I've made for myself: I'm going to win 4 Heismans, and then instead of going pro, I'm going to become a coach. It's only funny if you imagine that happening in real life:

STUD: I've just won my fourth Heisman!
COACH: Congratulations. Good luck in the NFL.
STUD: I'm not going to the NFL.
COACH: You're not?
STUD: Nope. I'm going to coach.
COACH: Oh. And pass up millions of dollars?
STUD: Yep.
COACH: Suit yourself. Good luck.
STUD: By the way, I've been hired to coach HERE.
COACH: What?
STUD: Yeah. You haven't lost a game in four years, but you're fired!
COACH: I guess that's life...
