Does any of you ever run the zone read plays? I hadn't bothered with them on any of these games until about a couple weeks ago. I have a lot of fun with them. I'll usually run some form of a zone read, with a pitch option for the QB after he keeps it. (Either lining up with two RBs in the backfield, or using a WR for the pitch.)

If the DE sits back to take the QB, it can be tough to get yards, but if the DE takes the RB it is an easy big gain every time. For this reason, I use it a lot on first down, sometime second, but almost never on third. The play is at its best when the person you're playing is controlling the DE, because they're likely to bite down on the RB.

Maybe this is old news to everyone, but I don't feel like I see many people running the zone read online.

It is too easy for the defender to hesitate and be able to tackle either guy or slow them down since ea uses proximity animations instead of actual physics.

Are you talking about if the DE is player-controlled?

Typically I find the play is either no gain when the DE sits back to take the QB, or an easy 6-10+ yard gain if the DE takes the RB. (Usually running this with Pryor, which admittedly makes it easier.)

I'm usually talking about when a user controlled MLB or FS is attacking the backfield.

But you don't have to take one or the other. A lot of the time you can hesitate just a sec and then plow through to make the tackle, and it will often bring down either of the two in my experience.

The QB takes off slowly, so there's no need to take the RB. Shade towards the back, and he doesn't keep the ball chase down the QB.

He has to pick up 3 yds just to get no gain.

Do you know who covers the pitch man? Usually if the play is getting blown up in the backfield I can make the pitch to salvage the play, and sometimes it still ends up being a big play. tbh though, I don't think I've played anyone who defended it as intelligently as you laid it out.

Re: LB or safety attacking -- I would just audible to a pass play. I never run a running play unless I know how to run a passing play I can audible to from the run play. Also, generally if someone is player controlling a safety I just throw it right by them, especially if they are bringing the safety up into the box. Not many people can effectively cover the pass when controlling a safety from the start of the play.

So you're talking triple read option rather than just one mesh point?

I don't like slow developing plays because the defensive line often tends to disrupt the lanes by then. I also generally play on heisman where defenders do crazier things.

I'll even control my safety in cover one at times. It is chancey, but so is throwing on my 3-3-5 D

IMO the Zone Read plays have been pretty useless since PS2.... I could effectively run it on the PS2 versions of NCAA...but once the game hit PS3 its an uphill battle just to even get back to the LOS when running it

Yeah, I only run it if there's a pitch option for the QB.

I hate playing against the 3-3-5. I've never been able to figure out how to use it well, although I haven't played around with it much. I'm probably spoiled by playing with OSU so much... I usually just sit back in the 4-3 stack and play cover 3 until I can tell the person I'm playing knows how to pick it apart. Once they do, I'll start being more creative by throwing in some zone blitzes etc.

That's what I had sorta assumed until I started messing around with it a couple weeks ago. The thing that sucks, is that if you're forced to hand it off, the play goes nowhere. The up side of the play, though, is pretty high -- especially when you have someone like Pryor at QB. If the DE bites on the hand off, you just run straight where the DE lined up was for a solid gain.

I think I also like using it because it gives you more control over the play, and at least presents the illusion of requiring more skill. :wink2:

It can't be a staple of your offense because of how inconsistent it can be, but I think it can have its place. (Like I said above, if someone starts specifically controlling players to stop the zone read, you can usually find some way to make them pay in some way.)

They need to fix the polls in the next one, you get some weird rankings in there, and teams jump when it doesn't make sense (this has nothing to do with the OD)

I was playing a dyansty with OSU and I started out the season #1 (i was trying to get the achievement that you start and end #1), I was blowing people out all season (didn't win by less than 24 pts) and gave up 0 pts 5 times, and yet by week 9, I got jumped by Bama, WTF...I was pretty pissed since this caused me not to be able to get the achievement

That happened to me too.

I'd be more concerned if it were some other team. It's no secret they gave Bama a little extra juice in this one.
