NCAA punishes USC - Reggie Bush, OJ Mayo, Dwayne Jarrett, Joe McKnight investigation

are you referring to the lack of capitalization at the beginning of the sentences or the ellipses? :p
ot: no. however, as a self-described grammarian, you should be ashamed of yourself for not easily finding the two mistakes. also, a lack of capitalization is a matter of style, as long as the lower caps are intended. the ellipses, though misused in form, i won't quibble about.

Re: Reggie Bush Claims He Made $100,000 Through USC Work-Study Program

Re: Bush also added that, on average, the university's work-study jobs paid $6.50 an hour.

$100,000 / $6.50 = 15384.62 hours of work

52 weeks per year x 40 hours = 2080 hours per year if you work full time

15384.62 / 2080 = 7.4 years of work

To "take home" $100,000 doing work study he would have had to work full time (40 hours every week of the year) for 7.4 years and not pay any income/social security taxes. Yea right!!!

Re: During my time at USC, I managed not only to carry a full 12-unit course load every semester while playing Division I football.

Apparently none of these were math classes or he might have been able to figure out that he couldn't have taken home $100,000 working part time at $6.50 per hour.

Dodd's article is fairly absurd. Where is his impassioned defense of Rhett Bomar? Or are Oklahoma and Bob Stoops not sexy enough to merit his intellectual gymnastics on their behalf?

It's one thing to say, "Hey -- let's wait for the facts before we rush into this." But to essentially argue that the facts are irrelevant is completely dishonest. "You can't prove it, it's not wrong anyway, the rules are stupid, fans love this team, who cares?"

First, you CAN prove it. If Reggie Bush received illegal benefits while playing, an NCAA investigation will determine that.

Second, rules are rules, and just because you don't like them doesn't mean that you get to break them. Case in point, the kid at Clemson who is raising his little brother. This guy follows the rules so closely that his coaches couldn't give his brother a ride to school. Go tell HIM that the rules don't matter. If anyone should be on the take, it's that guy, not some future NFL primadonna who can't wait one lousy year to get his hands on the money (presuming Bush's guilt, of course).

Third, popularity and "fan love" (or is it "Dodd's man love"?) don't absolve one of guilt, the OJ trial notwithstanding. Lots of fans love Oklahoma, yet the only football Rhett Bomar is playing right now is on Playstation. Troy Smith served his two games for a measly $500. Clarett lost eight? games, and ultimately his season and career over a phone bill initially. Were they guilty because Ohio State and Oklahoma don't play "exciting" football?

The argument that Reggie Bush was too talented and too exciting, and that USC was too good to have this potential scandal tarnish their reputation is ludicrous. Older fans will remember SMU's "Pony Express" tandem of Craig James and Eric Dickerson. Through the early 1980's, SMU had a talent-laden, winning program. It was also crooked to the core, and the NCAA shut it down. What was once a SWC and national power is now a school that's been hanging on to the last rung of the D1A ladder for over 15 years. Success and popularity don't absolve you from following the rules.

For the sake of college football, and for some of the excellent USC fans who post here, I hope that this investigation doesn't reveal any violations by their school or by Bush and his family. Hoping for the best doesn't mean sweeping under the rug, however. If something happened, there should be an appropriate penalty. College football will move on.

We have survived the fallout from OSU's suspensions and basketball scholarship reductions, Oklahoma has moved on without Bomar, Alabama is slowly rebuilding after the disaster of the Albert Means scandal. USC will recover from this, regardless of how it shakes out. No one should fear the process, nor make premature excuses for any potential guilt, including sports columnists.

While I can't deny that someone CAN prove it, the important thing is whether NCAA CAN PROVE IT. Remember that the NCAA doesn't have any subponea powers. Unless Bush voluntarily talks to NCAA (which he has no reason to), and unless other sources voluntarily talk to NCAA, the NCAA can't prove anything.
