NCAA - slowly ruining football (rules changes - merged)

So there is no advantage to high short kicks and having fast gunners. Smdh.
This is a mind-bogglingly stupid rule...
They’re trying to minimize people getting hurt and this is in line with years of rules moving to minimize kick offs; I do not find this surprising at all.

In terms of the usefulness of the high short kick, the person making the fair catch can still mishandle it and turn the ball over.

I realize it directly impacts what Ohio State has done on kickoff over the past several years and I still don’t really give a damn about this rule.

Might as well just eliminate KOs altogether and just let the team just scored upon get the ball on their own 25. Teams have always been able to fair catch the ball on a kickoff, but to get the ball at the 25 when you fair catch it at the 3 yard line is idiotic.

Eliminating kicks altogether would eliminate the on side kick off. I suppose I could imagine a rule where a team is afforded the option of giving the ball to the opponent at the opponent's 25 or attempting an on side kick. I mean, it's not much of a surprise to anyone at the end of a game that the team is going to try such a kick, so lining up to attempt one rather than giving the other team the ball at the 25 won't really ruin any "element of surprise." Still, the end of games isn't the only time a team has done an on side kick, and on those occasions, the element of surprise would be totally gone and that part of the game, also effectively eliminated.

Then a receiving team that wants to return kicks (say they have a Ted Ginn clone) doesn't get the chance because the kicking team says "Fuck it, we say take the touchback". Now you have kicking team in complete control of the kickoff situation. I do agree that the on-side kickoff option should not be eliminated, but that's most likely because I feel that almost all kickoffs should run back if the ball isn't knelt in the end zone (save for pooch kicks around the 30-35 yard line where it's advantageous to the receiving team).

This smells like a safety issue, and onsides kicks are as defenseless as punt returners

I agree it is a safety issue, and if they're being true to achieving that goal, then ... well... some games will be over a lot sooner, I guess.
And once football is cancelled (or replaced), defenders can finally stop fearing having their neck broken by ballcarriers who have no limitations on illegal facemasks.

Don't be silly. Dangerous activities are rendered safe if you're carrying a ball. Well... unless you just caught the ball... then it's still dangerous. But, at some point, you've carried the ball long enough that all dangerousness is no longer an issue.

I want to see kickers drilling line drives that either ping off a guy at the 40 or skip down inside the 10 where the returner has no choice but to run it. I'm also open to other ideas to subvert this rule.

If they really want to get rid of kickoffs, then just do it already. Add it to the list of things that have taken my favorite sport and turned into a virtual 7 on 7 drill, where hitting someone too hard is a penalty. :roll1:

I don't know, maybe I'm not understanding this correctly. If the return man signals for a fair catch (meaning he wouldn't be hit anyways) anywhere inside the 25, the series starts at the 25, yet he could choose to return the kick from ,say the 10 yard line, and still get decleated. Is that correct?
