Negative Recruiting Tactics and Silent Verbals (split then merged)

Just to provide some perspect on this whole thing: not too long ago, most of us would have been content with a DL class of Martin, Barksdale, Jeremiah and one more DT. I think Martin and Barksdale end up here. Jeremiah will be here the moment he gets his scores. Thomas is icing on the cake, and I think we will have space for him. Stills/Brent/Heyward are the wildcards here. We will still end up with an excellent class, but it will not be as sexy as some have predicted about a month ago.

DL recruits

1. Martin is a DE...not a DT. OSU is dreadfully thin at DT next year. People will jump and mention specific guys sliding down to DT.....but those guys are far from certain to be studs. We need a stud or two on the DL or we'll be moving OL over next year.

2. OSU is one of the few schools not negatively recruiting yet seems to be taking the brunt of the negative recruiters. REally strange. It's astonishing that OSU has to go hat-in-hand to OOS recruits and apologize for beating the local state team in the NC game to get guys to consider OSU.

3. I think JT ought to experiment with some OOS players by demanding their public commitment for once. Perhaps that will be enough to solidify their commitment. Apparently the silent commitment (or whatever its interpretation is) doesn't amount to a hill of beans.

4. We're not in good shape with Brent from what I can tell. The Illinois game was probably the wrong one for JT to retreat into a shell in the 2nd half. We should have beaten them down. Instead, Illinois' D played more aggressively and looked to be at a very high level. Brent was watching all the enthusiasm the Illini D had as they ran off the field after another 3 and out.

Can anyone give specifics as to how PSU or other schools are recruiting negatively?

I, too, would like to hear about the negativity being used.

Read the articles on Still, and it is obvious that distance from home was a huge factor:

[paraphrase]OSU is so far from home - your parents will never get to see you play.[/paraphrase]

Borderline negative recruiting.

A recruit isn't likely to say what negative recruiting tactics were used (but see Doug Worthington). However, we can assume that some of the negative statements were concerning: (a) depth chart; (b) quality of education / graduation rates; and (c) NCAA investigations (yes, the spectre of MoC will still hang over this prgram for a few more years). In addition, JoPa has been known to throw out some personal shots at programs like Ohio State.

I can only speak to PSU and this is of course subjective (because we do not ever know exactly what is said between a coach and a recruit). You have to read between the lines in the interviews that recruits give to get a sense of tactics. PSU seems to use their high grad rate numbers when going after recruits. Especially minority recruits. In other words, "we will make sure you graduate whether you get injured or not, whether you make the NFL or never see a down at the next level, but those other schools are just interested in what you can do for them on the field..." They seem to use this tactic against OSU, UM, and just about every other program that PSU considers "football factories". They use it on the out of state kids more so than anything else because kids in OH seem to know or at least understand that OSU is concerned with on AND off the field success.

Wad45-recruiting is such an ebb and flow (been following since '84), today is one of the lower points based on info flowing on the DTs....hopefully the tide turns...getting beat out for blue chips by Illinois and PSU (given they got like 627 DL last year) is rough...

I have never posted in a recruit forum, but I'd like to give my 2 cents on the subject and the mods can move it if necessary. As far as negative recruiting, it's such a lame attempt at bashing another school, and it works a lot of the time. I personally can't stand it. Granted, I was never recruited by D-1 schools, but I was being recruited by several D-II and a ton of D-III schools. I went on my visits and I'll never forget that when I told a lot of the schools that were recruiting me that I was interested in Mount Union, they immediately turned sour and bashed the program.

When I visited Mount on a recruiting trip, the one thing that stood out in my mind was basically a simple conversation with one of the coaches. The very first thing he said to me when we sat down was, "By the end of this conversation, you will know where you want to go to school, and play college football." He asked me the usual football questions, strength questions, and talked about the program, the academics, and the sort. He asked me what my goals were, short, medium, and long. I found it to be very comfortable, and infact it just pumped me up. He then asked me what other schools were recruiting me. I told him I was interested in several of the OAC schools. Not once did he bash the other schools.

At the end of the conversation, he asked me, "Do you know where you want to go to college?" I said yes. I don't know if some of the recruiters play psychological games with these kids, but it's so weak that they drill some statistical crap bashing a university into their heads. I sincerely hope that a lot of the kids we're recruiting and have given silent verbals, stick to their guns and not let the crap get to them. Football is most certainly a physical game but it's also very much a mental game...even in the recruiting process. You can get a sense of one's character right off the bat when you have one interview them. They're either interested or they're not, it's just that simple. That works for the athletes and coaches alike. You either know you want to play for this school and coach, or you don't.

I really hope we get Devon. I hope he knows he wants to play for JT and wants to be a part of the tradition. He seems like a good kid from what I've read about him and he seems like he comes from a very good family. I hope he decides with a clear head and leaves the negative recruiting psychological bs out of it.

One guy that immediately comes to mind is Doug Worthington right now. He committed and then took all of his visits (I think all, but I know some) afterwards and still stood strong with Ohio State. Now, he will most likely be starting DT next year and it seems he is loving his stay. Still, not only in stature, but in the way his recruitment is going, looks to be headed in the same direction. He just hasn't publically committed yet.

Thanks for the response, LJB. I'm hoping they will always be able to use the depth chart against us. Seems like JT and the school admins are taking the right steps to take away the grad rates and quality of education comments and time will clean up the spectre of MoC. But with the high stakes involved, I'm sure they'll come up with new ones.

I hear ya...but just remember that if we lose either of those kids (Still or Brent) it will most likely be because of location. Never underestimate how big of a role that plays...Illinois is close to home for Brent and PSU is closer to home for Still. And don't think that hasn't been brought to their attention by those respective staffs.

If this same type of stuff happens every year from the same schools (PSU), what type of recourse does the OSU coaches have? I assume not very much...would they ever make the accusations public, etc? Just looking for opinions...

I don't mean to split hairs but I don't think some of what I've read is really negative recruiting. Distance for the parents is just a simple fact. PSU
should be proud of their graduation rate. LJB pointed out, MoC hanging over our heads for a few more years, so will the Cooper years of poor performance in the class room.
