I grasp those points just fine.

At no point have I said there is no difference between the "real" officials and the replacements. I said the difference is being exaggerated, and the emotional reactions to it are completely over the top.

The longer this thread rails on about it the more convinced I become of that point of view. People are losing their minds over something that, at the end of the day, isn't really that important. If it feels hugely important, a little perspective is in order.

Important enough that you've posted more times than anyone else in this thread. So it must be pretty important.

People are "losing their minds" (since we're all just exaggerating for effect now) because the integrity of the game is taking a huge hit. That might not seem important now, but with every missed call, the microscope gets bigger. After last night, I don't see how even average officiating is going to satisfy the consumer that the game is being adjudicated fairly.

But maybe I'm just being emotional.

Peter King points out this isn't just about the extra peanuts the refs want added to their pensions:

Newsflash, refs....

Same thing happened to millions of people years ago. My father was one of them. Worked for ol Ma Bell for 30 years. They told him he either convert to a 401(k) and keep working, or he could retire now.

He retired 10 years before he passed away.

I can sympathize with the refs in a way.....only in a way, because irregardless of what any of them say, the majority of them have successful careers outside of football (at least, the regular NFL refs).

I don't feel bad for anybody expect the Replacements, some of whom aren't doing that bad of a job. It's not about any of that though.

I'm a small business owner, but I've been an employee. If my boss had come up to me after a year of record profits and gave me an ultimatum that would result in my retirement taking a hit, I would have told my boss to go fuck him- or herself. That's not how a successful business treats its employees. When you have a good year, you thank your employees, even give them bonuses. Not the NFL.

If the NFL were having some financial trouble or they were coming a down year, I could probably understand trying to re-negotiate. But they're coming off a similar lockout with the NFLPA in which they just grabbed a lot of money back from the players. Now they're doing the same to the officials.

It's the same shit they do to the season-ticket holders by forcing them to pay normal prices for preseason game. It's the same shit they pull on the local taxpayers when they threaten to move their franchise if they don't buy them a new stadium.

These owners can honestly just go fuck themselves. Except Mike Brown. Obviously he's just a hard-working American who built himself up from nothing. So he gets a pass. :wink2:

What exactly is being exaggerated about how bad the replacement officials are? The coverage? Because that I agree with.

I suspect that's not what some say is being exaggerated. It's hard to exaggerate how bad something is when it is probably the worst the league has seen. Look at some of these calls. They're fucking hilarious. Just absurd. There is a noticeable gap in the actual NFL refs and these replacement guys. I don't blame the guys - they're in a very bad spot - but let's not beat around the bush.. they shouldn't be officiating NFL games.

I'm just trying to figure out what's being exaggerated. It's the worst officiating I've seen in the NFL since I've started watching football. If you think I'm exaggerating, name a year it was worse?

Also, I don't watch ESPN anymore. If I do, it's a game and I'm very likely not listening to it. I haven't watched a second of ESPN since the officiating disaster that was the GB/Seattle game. I'm not sure it's a media-driven firestorm as much as it is an NFL-driven firestorm.

Report: Deal between NFL and refs "at hand," with possibility of return this weekend http://wp.me/p14QSB-5yTa

Now, ESPN’s Chris Mortensen’s reporting that “an agreement in principle is at hand,” with the possibility of regular officials being on the field this weekend.

http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap10...ome-to-agreement-on-issue-of-backup-officials

The NFL and NFL Referees Association negotiated through Tuesday from 8:30 a.m. until 2 a.m. Wednesday, according to sources briefed on both sides' positions, and at least one breakthrough resulted.

The league and referees have agreed to create a developmental program as a compromise to the NFL's demand for the addition of 21 officials to the current contingent of 121 NFLRA members, per an NFLRA source. The pool of money for the existing officials also will remain the same.

During Tuesday's talks, the owners who have shown no inclination to budge on the referees' benefits issues became involved on a more detailed level in the negotiations, per an NFL source. The federal mediator is said to have kept things on track.

Green Bay eye doctor offers NFL's 'replacement refs' free Lasik eye surgery

Monday night's dramatic last-minute loss to the Seattle Seahawks has many Green Bay Packers fans wondering if the referees have eye trouble.
That's why a Wisconsin eye care provider wants to help the NFL referee who made the game-deciding call see more clearly.
Dr. Christopher Smith is offering free Lasik surgery to the replacement referees who officiated Monday night's game.
"Yeah. The referees obviously they had some vision issues," Smith said. "So we decided that we could help them with that."
Smith says he and his staff will also talk to the referees about decision-making, and the rules of football.
No word yet on whether the NFL will take the eye doctor up on his offer.
