The Dallas Stars signed veteran defenseman Sergei Gonchar to a two-year, $10 million contract on Saturday, one day after acquiring the rights to the 39-year-old Russian from the Ottawa Senators in exchange for a conditional sixth-round pick in the 2013 NHL Draft.

Anyway, I wonder if the NHL would have anything to gain by putting their product directly against the NBA. I know a lot of people bitch about the product that the NBA puts on the floor and Darth Stern. If the NHL put together a marketing campaign that's a montage of alternating clips of NHL hits vs. NBA flops and guys whining about calls it seems like that would appeal to the casual American sports fan who may just be watching the NBA because it's what ESPN is covering.

Meaning you aren't going to get a lot of NBA to NHL conversions as they are two pretty distinct market segments/demographics. Sure there could be some but probably not enough to launch a major marketing campaign over.
I think the NBA ran off that big group of people who could actually enjoy both a long time ago.
