O.J. Mayo (Official Thread)

Come on thomps...it's much more than a $400 TV. If all he got was a $400 TV then this discussion isn't happening. If TP was still driving that Corvette around then I would be worried. He borrowed a car for prom. There isn't a hypothetical way that it's ok because it is ok no matter which way you slice it. If he shows up for school in June in a tricked out Escalade then I expect someone to look into it.

It's thousands of dollars being handed out to players at USC. Ohio State self reports $500 to Troy Smith and espin calls for Jim Tressel and Andy Geiger to be fired. You don't think that OSU could cover up $500 for their starting QB if they wanted to? Reggie Bush gets a house and Mayo gets $30,000 and...(crickets). All USC is showing us is that if you don't self report and just plead ignorance then nothing will happen to you.

Again, there is nothing....NOTHING... of any substance surrounding Terrelle Pryor. There is a bunch of stuff that bloggers and writers and pissed off fans threw against the wall hoping to have something stick.

Again, sorry that USC's star players seem to be getting well paid by these runners, but don't try and bring Ohio State players into the discussion because there really isn't anything there to discuss. Has anyone peeked their head into Joe McKnight's dorm room lately?

Where's that pic from? Hard to imagine it's a dorm room or anything less than $2 grand a month in the LA housing market.

I'm on a new Mac laptop. Just learning how to use the damn thing No right click. Is it a pic of OJ's home in LA?

I know that the Unversity of California system is having a hard time recruiting profs because of the cost of housing. Some of the campuses have gone to buying up property ad creating condo areas to house faculty. I would guess that housing is a major problem for USC in recruiting athletes too.

And while in West virginia they could have talked to Bob Huggins about Mayo and why he wasn't in Manhatten, Kansas...

Cuz' Guillory had sweeter connections than "grandpa" I reckon.

NCAA president has 'new information' on USC's Mayo

By CHRIS DUNCAN
AP Sports Writer
HOUSTON ? Saying the NCAA has "new information," president Myles Brand promised to investigate former Southern California basketball star O.J. Mayo, who allegedly received thousands of dollars in gifts from money given to an event promoter by a sports agency.
On Sunday, ESPN reported that Bill Duffy Associates provided Rodney Guillory with about $200,000 before Mayo arrived at USC. Louis Johnson, a former associate of Mayo's, told "Outside the Lines" that Mayo received about $30,000 and other benefits from Guillory while in high school and during his one season at USC.
Mayo declared for the NBA draft after the season and hired BDA Sports' Calvin Andrews as his agent.
Brand, speaking Tuesday in Houston to kick off this week's Division II National Championships Festival, said that "our enforcement division has new information" about Mayo's case "and as a matter of fact, when we have new information on any case, we will investigate."
He would not comment further on the specifics of Mayo's case.

In a new article on espn.com, Mayo states, "I have never received any cash from any agencies or anything. The money I've got, friends send it from home or my school check." Isn't that essentially corroborating what Johnson said? Namely, that the agencies funneled cash to Mayo through Mayo's buddies back home? It cannot be that easy to skirt NCAA rules.

Apologetic Mayo drives a Porsche

Posted: Thursday May 15, 2008 07:08AM ET

O.J. Mayo apologized for the criticism directed at USC and Trojans Athletic Director Mike Garrett because of the allegations and said he was upset he had been portrayed in a light similar to that of former USC football star Reggie Bush, who has been accused of taking illegal extra benefits from a failed sports marketer."If you rode to my mother's house, it's still a two-bedroom house, one floor," Mayo said. "She still drives the same Toyota Corolla that she drove for the last three years and is still trying to meet ends. So for them to say I received $30,000 or whatever the case is, I definitely don't think that's enough to sell out myself and my family." Following the interview, Mayo slipped into a new red Porsche Cayenne GTS with two friends and drove off, saying he was headed to Chicago for workouts in advance of next month's NBA draft.
