OC Chip Kelly (Official Thread)

KELLY’S OREGON OFFENSES WERE ELITE

Kelly built his reputation for being one of college football’s top offensive minds during his six years at Oregon, where he was offensive coordinator for two seasons (2007-08) before a four-year reign as the Ducks’ head coach.

Oregon finished in the top 12 nationally in scoring offense in all six of those seasons while it finished in the top 12 nationally in total offense in five of those six seasons.

CHIP KELLY’S OREGON OFFENSES
YEAR SCORING TOTAL
2007 12th (38.2) 10th (467.5)
2008 7th (41.9) 7th (484.8)
2009 8th (36.1) 33rd (412)
2010 1st (47) 1st (530.7)
2011 3rd (46.1) 4th (522.8)
2012 2nd (49.6) 5th (537.4)
The Ducks won Pac-12 titles in all of Kelly’s first three seasons as head coach from 2009-11, while they finished the year ranked among the top four teams nationally in each of his final three seasons as Oregon’s head coach from 2010-12.

Kelly’s Oregon offenses were particularly outstanding in the run game, ranking in the top six nationally in rushing yards per game and the top seven nationally in rushing yards per attempt in all six of those seasons, including three seasons in which the Ducks led the entire nation in rushing average.

OREGON’S RUSHING NUMBERS UNDER CHIP KELLY
YEAR RYPG YPC
2007 6th (251.7) 7th (5.3)
2008 2nd (280.1) 1st (6.2)
2009 6th (231.7) 4th (5.5)
2010 4th (286.2) 4th (5.9)
2011 5th (299.2) 1st (6.7)
2012 3rd (315.2) 1st (6.0)
Kelly’s track record of coordinating elite rushing offenses should pair nicely with Day’s track record of coordinating elite passing offenses.

Exactly why I'm laughing at people only looking at his HC record. He's coming here to coach offense. He's fucking great at that and that's all we need...offensive spark using an elite arsenal of weapons. Chip is perfect for that and by all accounts a great dude.

If we hired him as our new HC, I would sing a different tune. But we're not, so look at offensive acumen and guess what...home run.

Not only that he really compliments Day besides working together in the past. Chip's Strength is Ryan's weakness run game design and vice versa,

If he can manage to deploy an offense in which Dorian Thompson-Robinson can put up 10k passing yards, 88 TDs to 36 INTs, and 2k rushing yards with an additional 28 TDs on the ground with limited talent surrounding him, I’m pretty confident he still has what it takes to get the best out of an offense with more talent than he’ll know what to do with.

I’m most excited to see some of the read concepts he’ll be able to implement with two of the best RBs in the country, and multiple mobile QB options as well. This should be a fun offense, and takes a ton off Day’s plate to allow him to continue outfitting the Death Star.

Do none of you people ever actually watch the films? The Death Star loses. Come up with a better analogy.

I think a lotta people think back to the Chip Kelly offenses run by Marcus Marriota, Dennis Dixon, Darren Thomas, etc., and have the ultra fast paced tempo teams that were more finesse and essentially basketball on grass.

But he evolved quite a bit at UCLA and was much more pro style and less tempo…..in fairness, I don’t think he ever had the talent at UCLA to replicate what he was doing at Oregon but he tried to play much more Complimentary style football, and learned to take defense into account.

Will be interesting to see how he approaches the offense with this amount of weapons, the speed we have at RB and WR, and a mobile QB…in an ironic twist, part of his “self-demotion” to OC is partly bc I don’t think he wants to worry about defense, special teams, and running a whole team at this point…..he wants to solely focus on offense and in turn, he’s gonna allow Day to become a more complete HC….which is kinda badass when you think about it….hopefully Chip coming to help Day, gets Day over the hump and Chip’s pupil becomes the master. It’s pretty storybook if they can reach their ceiling…..
Dennis Dixon played for Mike Bellotti.

Dennis Dixon played for Mike Bellotti.
Kelly was the OC in 2007 for Dixon's last year. From Kelly's wiki:
In his first season as offensive coordinator at Oregon, the Ducks led the Pac-10 in scoring (38.15 ppg) and total offense (467.54 ypg), and also became the highest scoring team while amassing the most yards in the history of Oregon football. Prior to Kelly's arrival at Oregon, Dennis Dixon struggled in his first three seasons at quarterback. Under Kelly's guidance, Dixon was the Pac-10 Offensive Player of the Year and emerged as a Heisman Trophy candidate.
