Game Thread Ohio State 24, Michigan State 17 (final)

When this one wrapped up, it didn't feel like a win. Two big negative plays kinda wiped away a lot of good that happened today. Then I thought about it some more, and realized that not only is this outcome OK for today, but also that I would've killed for this to have been the outcome in 1998. People can say what they want about the strength of this team, and perhaps they'll be right. A lot of other teams have lost games like this one this year, and the Buckeyes made it through, and I'm just fine with that.

Good points by jlb. I try to keep reminding myself how truly young this team is. Every game situation becomes a lesson learned. Let's hope that the mistakes made today are not repeated, and I'm sure that message will be driven home at practice this week. The media and those that are negative can think and say what they want. I see a team that continues to grow. The Bucks can play a helluva lot better, and that's a good thing. You don't want a finished product in October.

Well, I would have liked to be a little more convinced going into Happy Valley, but you need to have your mettle tested and our boys passed with flying colors.

I'm a little concerned offensively going into next week, particularly with some issues on the line. I do, however, think we have the playmakers to put enough points on the board. We just need to play like the first half. Cripes, that was like two totally different games offensively, but credit needs to go to Coach D for making some very good adjustments. Defensively, I can see us totally dominating State Penn. Morelli hasn't seen a D like this yet and although he's looked better recently, he's a long way from being a good QB. I'd also say MSU's RB > PSU's. It'll be another grudge match, but I like us something in the area of 17-10.

Well, the way I see it Tressel has a few things to work on in practice. The first would be Offense going defense in the case of turnover, it seemed like the Bucks just gave up when the ball was turned over, and that's something that a great team can't let happen. The second will obviously be protecting the ball. If it wasn't for a lucky fall on the ball today that game could have gone into overtime.

We need to be putting our foot on the oppositions throat, up by 24? That's cool, but 31 would be better and 38 would be even better than that. The second half felt like the bucks didn't have the same energy they did in the first, I am sure some of that was MSU adjustments, but I think a lot of it was the idea that the game was out of hand, so the offense got too relaxed.

two very very uncharacteristic turnovers for TDs --- that's what happened. But it could have been disaster.
Well, this will mean some extra work for the offense this week, and Boeckman will be forced to watch the third quarter 20 or 30 times.... that ought to be enough motivation for him.
Really disappointed with the third quarter. Two terrible turnovers, blocked FG.... and no picks by our D. God I hate that cover 2, if that's what it's called.

Let's take it out on Penn State next week. I want a demolition, like 42-6.

[sigh] but I'll take just a win........

There was a loss of focus and Sparty made some terrific plays on "D"!
But, John Cooper has left the building!

State Penn looked like crap today. Maybe they were looking ahead or their offense is smoke and mirrors and there's no way that offense scores much on us next week!
We are blooded and battle tested, now.
At some point Tress will smile on the inside about that!
We won't lose next week! :tongue2:

Two straight possessions end in turnovers returned for TDs.

Your 24 point lead crumbles to 10 points.

You've got nothing going for you now, momentum is all on the other team.

The crowd gets behind you (and the stadium was rocking), and Tresselball rears its ugly head. At the perfect time. Just get yards, burn clock, punt it away, and let your amazing defense shut down the other team. JT did a great job stopping the bleeding there, and put the game on Beanie's shoulders. Great job to pull it out against some adversity there.

But we can't expect to win @ Penn State and @ Michigan like that.

Anyone who watched the game will understand that the game was not as close as the score would indicate.

It's just funny that all of those SEC fans didn't watch the game, and therefore will use this as ammo to say Ohio State doesn't deserve to be number one.

At least their current coach isn't smacking himself in the post game conference.

Here's a great post by ChalesBabb on bucknuts.com. <snip>
He left out an enormous difference. Damon Moore incapacitated himself with his endzone dive at the end of his TD return. Only then did MSU start their comeback, slashing through the Buckeyes defense almost exclusively with Plexico Burress. I've made that correlation ever since that fateful quarter because their attack seemed drastically more effective with Moore out of the game. Correct me if I'm wrong..

Of course, the absence of Anderson parallels to Moore's absence in 1998. Anywho, the demons have been exorcised, same as against Washington (referring back to 40-7 in 1986).

I was suprised at some of the post game comments and the looks on some of the Buckeyes faces........they talked like they lost the game which is good in my opinion.....they know next week there is no room for mistakes.
