Game Thread Ohio State 3, Southern Cal 35 (Sept. 13)

Thomps, avoid the 405 like the plague! Go out the 210 and slide down south on the ?56?. Actually I'll take the 5 and exit by the Coliseum and park on some one's lawn for $5.

USC has more 5*s as their 2's than most have as their 1's. Home town advantage and the way USC has played in big games will give them the edge (OSU hasn't exactly been outstanding in it's last two 'big' games - the BCS championships). I'm betting USC is favored by 10.

Ultimately who cares, unless you've got some money to squander with your bookie? Let USC be favored. In fact, our boys seem to play better when the other team is favored, so let USC have the bulls-eye on their back. Tress & Co will have them prepared to do battle, as it's probably not going to get OSU to the BCS championship unless they beat USC. Everyone is looking to blacklist OSU from the national championship if there's one glimmer of a way they can do it.

I really don't see it getting that high. You don't think the bookies know we return all this talent?

You mean the same talent that got beat by 14 points in the NC game (was 21 until a late TD against a defense that wasn't playing all-out)? Our defense has been blistered the last two games against top-flight opponents away from The Shoe, and that's what they'll remember.

You are a broken record. Yeah, I know you think experience doesn't play a big factor in performance. You've now told me multiple times. I strongly disagree. The most experienced and deepest team under Tressel is going to be a 10 point dog? Ain't happening.

FYI, Florida and LSU's offenses are very different than USC's.

USC is god-like and never loses at home, unless they are playing Stanford and their backup QB

I mean how could Ohio State possibly beat the greatest team ever on the road?

Then don't make me repeat myself. I'm telling you what bookies will look at. So, until our defense actually stuffs a major power in a big non-home game, your opinion means jack shit to those who make their living out of making the betting lines. They'll recall that our defense gave up 39, 41, and 38 points to the last three top-five (all were #2) teams we faced. They'll remember what USC just did to Illinois, on the very same field that they'll play us. We will have an entire two more games of "experience" (facing powerhouses like Youngstown State and Ohio U.) since the big loss in NOLA. You can say how "deep" and "experienced" the team is, but the bookies will see little differences between the Ohio State team that got spanked by LSU and the Ohio State team that will be in the Colliseum, and the USC team that ape-fucked the Illinois team that beat us on our home field and the USC team on Sep 13th.

USC's offense is as good as LSU's and Florida's.

How???? USC doesn't have SEC Speed! Finally! Woohoo. A game where the refs are able to keep up with the speed. Beautiful.

Does our win against defending national champion Texas, at their place when they returned 16 starters not count as a time when we stuffed a major powerhouse in a non home game???

No, it doesn't...not when they start a RS frosh QB who had never taken a snap in college until the previous game. Colt McCoy got rattled early and once that happened Texas was toast. Now, had we done that to them near the season's end or in a bowl game, once McCoy and Texas were on a roll, then I'd say it would.

In bookie's eyes (and even moreso in the media's eyes), our defense has not met the task in it's last three huge games, all against against #2 teams.

You are thinking think I'm saying that we should be 10-point underdogs...I'm not. I'm pointing out why I think the line could very well be near 10 points.

A) I'm not making you do anything. You just want to bully your opinion on me.

B) No, I think you're telling me what ESPiN looks at.

Cryami, K-State, and Texas both years don't count?

My opinion means jack shit to the guys who made USC a 40 point favorite over Stanford? Ok...

They'll recall that our defense gave up 39, 41, and 38 points to the last three top-five (all were #2) teams we faced.

They'll also recall we only had 2 returning starters on defense for the first two and 4 for the third. This year we'll essentially have 10(Wilson was supposed to be a starter last year).

They'll remember what USC just did to Illinois, on the very same field that they'll play us.

At least get your facts straight. The Rose Bowl and Coliseum are two different stadiums. If we're playing the "team A lost to team B and team C beat team B, so team C would also beat team A" game, how did we beat scUM? scUM beat Illinois at Illinois, Illinois beat us at home, and we beat scUM at scUM. Vegas knows there is no transitive property in college football. They look at match-ups.

We will have an entire two more games of "experience" (facing powerhouses like Youngstown State and Ohio U.) since the big loss in NOLA. Uh-huh. Here goes the broken record again. "Experience doesn't matter, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah". We've already covered this.

USC's offense is as good as LSU's and Florida's.

Not really but even if we do agree on that, we haven't had problems with pro style offenses before like we have with spread offenses with mobile QB's.

Son, you ain't seen bullying. I don't push my opinion on anyone, but when someone throws darts at it, I throw back.

Did our current defense play Miami in Jan 2003, or Kansas State in Jan 2004, or Texas in Sep 2005?

Oh, and you saw that mammoth upset of the ages coming...

Uh, no they won't. What they will remember is that we'll have virtually the same defense that gave up 28 points at home to Illinois and 38 points "at" LSU over the last three games they've played. And before you bring up our defensive masterpiece at Ann Arbor, that was due as much to Henne not being able to throw, Hart not being able to run, and Stuper Mario not being able to catch the ball when Henne finally got it to him, along with weather so bad that Tressel took the ball out of Boeckman's hands after the first couple drives, as much as it was the defense.

I don't recall throwing darts at you. You replied to me, not the other way around.

Did our current defense play scUM in November 2006, Florida in January 2007, or LSU in January 2008?

Of course not. Just saying they're not exactly Nostradamus either.

See, we really haven't accomplished anything with this bickering. You haven't actually backed up your argument that experience doesn't matter. You keep saying the "same" defense.

I was planning on going to this game in September, but if you're going to be at the Rose Bowl that day, you probably won't see me. :wink2:

How about a sig bet for you guys? (since O-B is vBroke) If the opening line is more than 7, Mili wins, if it's less than 7, Oregon wins. If it's 7 even, it's a wash.

If you both agree, I'd establish a certain service to be the official line for the bet when it comes out.

Just for the record, with a defense that featured many of their 2006 starters, Florida gave up 42 points to Vanderbilt, 30 to South Carolina, and, hell, 28 to Kentucky.

And it's kind of funny how much Mili's attitude has changed since the NC game.
