Game Thread Ohio State @ Maryland - 11/17/18, 12:00PM (ABC)

Just remembered this is a homecoming for Dwayne. Now I’m expecting a show.

Not only that, but I think he’ll be looking to tighten his game up after a few bad tosses against MSU. The drops didn’t help, but I can’t help thinking this one matters more to him to succeed.

Looking for a big day from the offense. Still waiting for the team to fire on all cylinders. They could be so potent if they can put it all together. However, if they do it the following week, that would be my preference. Would love to see them humming during The Game.

UMD defensive strength is against the pass (they are quite good at it and generate a ton of INT's) UMD defensive weakness is interior run.

UMD offensive strength is run game, specifically pre snap shifts/movement to confuse run fit assignments for LB's. UMD offensive weakness is passing, they basically don't do it (especially with the backup QB).

Pretty clear what needs to happen this week. The defense is going to get torched if they haven't cleaned up the gap soundness and tackling. Looking at the bright side, it's great preparation for tsun. I mean great prep.

The defense gave up 54 yards rushing on 18 carries (3.0 ypc) at Sparty, but 59 yards (47 and 12) came on back-to-back scrambles by Lombardi in the mid-3rd, which means MSU had a net -5 yards on the other 16 carries. Their RBs rushed only six times total between them, gaining a total of five yards (with the longest run being five yards). It was clearly the best the LBs played as a unit all year.

I agree. They look a lot better since moving back to normal depth.

Just pointing out that they are about to get put to a legitimate test.

It helps that MSU is the 117th ranked rush offense, though that hasn’t stopped other teams from record days, so that’s nice.

Oregon State is currently #68 in rushing with 168 ypg, and yet had 196 yards on 39 rushes (5.0 ypc) against us. The thing that hurt us, like it has in plenty of other games this year, were the big plays: 49-yard TD run (first possession), 80-yard TD run (broken tackle in the backfield), 78-yard TD run (poor angle by safety), which is a total of 207 yards. In other words, aside from those three plays Oregon State ran for a cumulative -11 yards on 36 carries. At Sparty, we didn't allow big rushes to happen, simply by playing proper assignments (whether or not Oregon State has better RBs than does Sparty is a matter for debate). Not getting caught out of position and not taking absolutely horrid pursuit angles all but eliminates huge rushes.

CONFIDENT DWAYNE HASKINS HEADS HOME TO TAKE ON THE MARYLAND TERRAPINS

98866_h.jpg

Humans aren’t typically supposed to have as much confidence as Dwayne Haskins.

He carries himself with the moxie of an NFL quarterback and speaks with the conviction of somebody who’s 31 years old, not someone who just turned the legal drinking age six months ago. Haskins feels more seasoned at quarterback after having started nearly a full season, but that doesn’t mean the game has become any easier for him mentally.

“I feel like it's always been slow, since the first game,” Haskins said.

Even last season, when he entered Ohio State’s game against Michigan after J.T. Barrett went down with an injury, Haskins says he wasn’t anxious or fearful.

“I'd say I was pretty calm in that situation,” Haskins said. “I didn't have any, like, too many racing thoughts. I didn't have any thoughts of concern or self-doubt.”

He remembers the last time he wasn’t completely calm behind the center. It’s been five years, but he remembers the game, his first as a starting quarterback in high school.

His team, Bullis (Maryland), was taking on St. John’s College in the opening week of the season. Terrell Davis, an Alabama linebacker who was committed to Ohio State for a few months, played for St. John’s and led a defense that picked off Haskins three times.

“I don't really like to talk about it,” Haskins said. “That's probably the only time I've felt nervous.”

Football: Dwayne Haskins returns home to play familiar faces

IMG_3371-2lh5hip-530x353.jpg

Dwayne Haskins remembers his first high school start vividly. He faced St. John’s High School in his sophomore season at The Bullis School in Potomac, Maryland, after moving to the state to play high school football.

“I threw three picks that game, so I don’t really like to talk about it,” Haskins said. “But that’s probably the only time I felt nervous.”

Saturday, Haskins will return to the state where he last doubted his football ability, but this time he is the starting quarterback at Ohio State, facing Maryland. And he has the opportunity to secure his place in Ohio State history in College Park, Maryland.

Haskins needs 50 passing yards to break former Ohio State quarterback Joe Germaine’s record for most passing yards thrown in a single season, a record he has held for the past 20 years. Haskins only needs three touchdowns to break former Ohio State quarterback J.T. Barrett’s record for most passing touchdowns thrown in a campaign.

In his first season as the starting quarterback, Haskins did not think breaking these records would be realistic. But as the records come closer to a reality for the redshirt sophomore, he said it’s a testament to the offense and the game plan in which he was placed.

“I’m looking forward to Saturday and so close to that single-season passing record. It’s been there for a long time, you know,” Haskins said. “It’s crazy to realize how cool that is.”

But his return to Maryland is more than breaking records in front of friends and family, in front of familiar players and coaches. It’s Haskins’ first opportunity to play against the school to which he initially committed.

As Haskins started the recruiting process, he said staying close to home was something that was important to him. He developed relationships with the coaching staff at Maryland, the players and the commits. His future seemed to be set.

Haskins said he wanted to change the stigma at Maryland, to get the top-rated players from the area to go to their in-state school. But he said people made their own decisions and went their separate ways.

Then Haskins’ dream school came calling.

“It’s been everything for me to come to Ohio State,” Haskins said. “It’s been a dream of mine since I was a kid.”

I agree... the big play we got caught chasing the motion from left to right. They countered back against the grain which was well designed.
