Ohio State Men's Tennis (2014/2019/2024 ITA Indoor National Champs, 17 Straight B1G Titles)

MTEN: Tucker?s Signees Ranked No. 2 in the Nation - The Ohio State Buckeyes Official Athletics Site - OhioStateBuckeyes.com

There is no sign of slowing down from the Ohio State men?s tennis team. Under Ty Tucker, 10th-year Ohio State head coach, the Buckeyes have risen from the cellar of the Big Ten Conference to a nationally dominant program, earning the ITA preseason No. 1 ranking in 2009.

The future continues to look bright for the Scarlet and Gray as Tucker?s incoming freshman class was voted the second-best in the nation by a panel of junior tennis experts in a media poll conducted by TennisRecruiting.net.

The class, consisting of all Ohio natives, includes Blue Chip star and New Albany, Ohio, native Chase Buchanan. In addition, Tucker has two five-star recruits in Peter Kobelt (New Albany, Ohio) and Wyatt Lippert (Cincinnati, Ohio) joining the team and a four-star recruit in Devin McCarthy, who enrolled at Ohio State in January.

The Buckeye recruiting class is tied for second with Yale, each receiving 335 points in the poll. Stanford earned the top nod, receiving 375 points while welcoming in three Blue Chip athletes and a three-star prospect.

This has already been reported but the official website is now sharing an extended story about this strong recruiting class.

4-0? How do they score those meets?

Some meets finish when a team wins 4 points, i.e. the total for a win is best of 7. Any matches not finished are halted and not recorded as victories or losses for the players.
In the match at Wake Forest, a doubles point was secured and then the first three singles matches sealed the victory for tOSU.

Awesome thanks. Do the men face Stanford this year before the NCAA's?

Stanford is ranked #11 by the ITA. They are not on the OSU schedule, however they may possibly meet in the ITA next week in Chicago. Stanford won their qualifier last week and will be headed to Chicago also. Haven't seen what the 16 team ITA draw looks like yet.

All right thanks. I thought they were number 2 but I guess they had the 1/2 recruiting class which is pretty hard to believe with OSU bringing in a "pro" and a couple 5 *'s

I don't know how good Stanford is this year but Texas and Georgia are very good. In fact, Georgia bounced Ohio State out of the NCAA tournament last year in the semi finals.

I would think that Love & Marriage:biggrin2: would be very knowledgeable about tennis.

Right about the #1 class in the nation, but the Stanford 2009's will not be eligible until next year.
Litlbuck about Texas and Georgia, the levels of competition are so close that on any given day any of the top 10-15 schools could knock off another.

That's interesting that all of the teams are so evenly matched. I take it from one I have read that we are probably stronger and singles then in doubles compared to other schools or is that a bad assumption.

You make an interesting observation on the strengths of OSU doubles vs. singles. Here are the stats for the season from the official site.

2008-09 Ohio State Men's Tennis -- Season statistics

TOSU winning percentage is a fraction better in singles than in doubles overall, but against nationally ranked competition the single's strength is noticably better. (Though the doubles vs. ranked opponents is not a very large sample.)
The ITA scoring system gives 3 doubles matches the equivalent value of one singles match. So some think doubles are not as critical.
I enjoy watching doubles, more spirited and team oriented, and that first point can offer a team momentum going into the 6 singles competitions.
