Game Thread Ohio State @ Nebraska - 09/28/19, 7:30PM (ABC)

Just watched the game this morning. Does anyone know if a warrant was issued for Werner’s arrest after he killed that guy? Holy shit - what a hit!

*edit: and now I see the 11 Warriors post saying pretty much the same thing...
The shot he took from behind to the head, which I didn't notice until seeing the replay, worries me wrt to a concussion. I hope he's okay.

The Grumpy Old Buckeye: Ohio State vs. Nebraska

Zach-Harrison-Ohio-State.jpg

It’s time for some Nebraska talk. If you’re new here, this is my column where I find things to complain about, even when there isn’t much to complain about. I’m talking about the kinds of things that make an old man like me walk outside and yell at clouds. So what’s grinding my gears after a 48-7 demolition of the Cornhuskers in Lincoln? Well, let’s get into it.

You’re Late
On the very first play of the game, Malik Harrison did a bad thing. After Chase Young forced Adrian Martinez to vacate the pocket, the linebacker committed a personal foul with a late hit out of bounds. Ohio State had contained the play deep in Nebraska territory and Martinez was way out of bounds when Harrison decided to launch himself at the Cornhuskers’ quarterback. Rather than continuing to have the Huskers backed up, it gave Nebraska’s offense some breathing room to start the trive. That ultimately didn’t hurt the Buckeyes due to Jeff Okudah’s second interception of the season but it was a mistake you wouldn’t expect from a seasoned veteran like Harrison and it can probably be blamed on being a bit too hyped up to start the game.

Mack’s Stumble
Following Okudah’s second interception of the game — which ended Nebraska’s best drive of the first quarter — Justin Fields delivered a pass to Austin Mack for a big play that should have been even bigger. Mack ran a nice route and lost his man with a double move, but he kind of stumbled coming out of his break. He recovered enough to catch the football but went down just after that as he was still a bit off balance. Had he been able to keep his footing he certainly would have scored a touchdown. Ultimately that stumble cost Ohio State points as the Buckeyes eventually had to settle for a field goal at the end of the drive.

The Overthrow
Fields had an opportunity to cap an impressive first half with yet another touchdown. Hurling the ball toward the end zone toward Chris Olave in the final minute of the first half, Fields put just one splash of sauce too many on his throw and Olave couldn’t haul it in. It would have been a spectacular finish to a statement half on the road but it fell harmlessly to the turf and allowed Nebraska to finally get a defensive stop a couple plays later — something the Huskers didn’t have up to that point.

I put it somewhere else in this thread but, going back to the boxing analogy, this was a bad matchup for Nebraska.

With the coaching changes Day made on defense OSU went from a great opponent for Martinez to among the 2-3 very worst.

Dominant DL + athletic back 7 with plenty of guys who can spy the QB + coaches who call zone defenses so those athletes in the back 7 are looking in on the QB most of the time = big trouble for a JT Barrett/A Martinez focused offense. Same thing happened to OSU vs Clemson in '16.

You see real effort out of Frosts guys but they need to clean up penalties and turn overs. Offense is legitimately dangerous, the defense needs a talent infusion.

Same EXACT thing

When a guard went down on the first drive and we had to replace him with someone who was not ready, that turned Clemson’s superiority between the B gaps into total dominance, the same kind of interior dominance the Buckeyes had last night.

That, plus the factors Jax mentions, are the recipe for stopping a QB-centric option offense.

There’s more to say on the subject, but I’ll move to the MSU thread for that

I'm sorry at the foolishness that is going on right now. And no, Gabby Union does NOT speak on behalf of the entire state of Lincoln. Don't get it twisted - we know what's about to go down.

LeBron James gloats over Ohio State's blowout win vs. Nebraska

Nebraska Huskers fans, including College GameDay guest picker Gabrielle Union, began Saturday optimistic that the team could pull off an upset at home against the Ohio State Buckeyes.

It was not meant to be, though, as Ohio State cruised to an emphatic 48-7 win over the Huskers on their home field. The victory sent NBA star LeBron James into gloat mode, as he called out Union and her husband Dwyane Wade on Twitter.

"Just wanna make sure my sister and brother @itsgabrielleu @DwyaneWade are doing ok!" James wrote in a tweet. "Can someone check on them as well for me if they are near them."

Union and Wade both appeared on College GameDay's live broadcast from Lincoln on Saturday morning. Union predicted that Nebraska would take down the Buckeyes. James also made a bet with Union on Twitter, declaring that the loser would get to pick their next taco tuesday location. The official Ohio State Football Twitter account recognized the bet in its postgame graphic.

"It looks like Taco Tuesday is coming to Columbus this week @KingJames," Ohio State's tweet said. "YESSIR!" James wrote in response.

I watched the game only a bit earlier. I also watched Wisconsin, who were much less impressive. Jack Tatum would love that hit by Werner. He is disarmingly calm on the field. Okudah is in beast mode. The D Line? Geez, that was fun to watch.

This team has a long way to go but they are starting to gel and it is an awesome potential that one senses. Just awesome.

Mack didn't stumble out of his break...he was in full stride but Fields over-led him and threw to the wrong shoulder. It definitely would've been a TD had the throw been on target.
